California Immunization Coalition and California Chronic Care Coalition Urge People to Get Vaccinated During Seasonal Influenza and COVID-19 «Twindemic»

SACRAMENTO, California, Aug. 31, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — To help protect people from severe COVID-19, the California Immunization Coalition (CIC) and the <a target="_blank"…

SACRAMENTO, California, Aug. 31, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — To help protect people from severe COVID-19, the California Immunization Coalition (CIC) and the California Chronic Care Coalition (CCCC) urge the public to get their influenza (flu) shot as the 2020-2021 flu season approaches. The viruses that cause the flu weaken the immune system, making people living with chronic conditions more susceptible to the coronavirus which causes COVID-19.

«We are facing a dangerous double whammy in the coming months,» said CIC Executive Director Catherine Flores Martin. «Contracting the flu and getting COVID-19 on top of it can be deadly, so don’t wait – vaccinate. Make plans to get a flu shot now to keep you and your family protected from influenza during the pandemic.»

Those at most risk for developing complications from the seasonal flu include people living with chronic conditions such as asthma, lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, liver and kidney disorders, autoimmune disease, cancer, and blood disorders. In addition, it is important that everyone over the age of 65 receive a flu vaccine:

  • 80 percent of COVID-related deaths have occurred in people over 65-years-old
  • Approximately 80 percent of older adults have at least one chronic disease and 77 percent live with at least two
  • Between 50 percent and 70 percent of seasonal flu-related hospitalizations are for people over the age of 65

«The seasonal flu can be devastating on its own, particularly in those living with chronic conditions,» said CCCC President & CEO, Liz Helms. «And those with chronic disease are also more vulnerable for complications if they contract COVID-19, making the coming months even more precarious, and even deadly, for so many Californians.»

The CIC recommends getting immunized for the flu in late September or early October. The flu season generally peaks between December and February. Less than half of US adults receive a flu vaccine each year. A recent study found vaccine coverage estimates in 2018-2019 remained substantially lower for non-Hispanic Black (39.4%), Hispanic (37.1%), and American Indian/Alaskan Native (37.6%) adults compared to non-Hispanic White adults (48.7%). In the 2019-2020 flu season, an estimated 60,000 people in the U.S. died from the flu, and influenza viruses caused up to 740,000 hospitalizations.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says flu vaccination can help protect people living with chronic disease avoid worsening illness:

  • Flu vaccination is associated with lower rates of cardiac events among people with heart disease, especially among those who have had a cardiac event in the past year
  • Flu vaccination can reduce hospitalization for flu-related chronic lung disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Flu vaccination is shown in separate studies to be associated with reduced hospitalizations among people with diabetes

«Preventing cases of the flu through vaccination will not only protect seniors and those living with chronic disease from potentially the deadly impact of flu , but since COVID-19 and flu symptoms are similar every person without flu symptoms will be one less person who will worry they have COVID-19 or which would further strain our already overburdened clinics and hospitals,» said Randy Bergen, MD, CIC board president and senior physician at Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in Walnut Creek.

Because of COVID-19 people may be wary of venturing out to get their flu shots this year, but most medical offices and clinics are taking precautions to protect patients seeking vaccinations and well-care. These precautions include separate facilities for seeing well-patients, scheduling well visits in the morning and visits for those with symptoms in the afternoon. The CIC and CCCC recommend people seeking the seasonal flu shot contact their medical providers or their local pharmacy to learn about the systems they have in place to protect patients seeking needed care like vaccines, and to find out when they can schedule their flu vaccine. In California, many pharmacies are already offering flu shots and they are an excellent option for many families.  Visit vaccinefinder.org to find a place nearby to get flu vaccine.

America Ferrera & Eva Longoria Bastón Alongside Latina Leaders Launch She Se Puede, A Digital Lifestyle Community For Latinas

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 31, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today marks the official launch of She Se Puede, a digital lifestyle community built to inspire, affirm, and inform Latinas so they can leverage their power to transform their lives, their families, their community and their nation. The nonprofit initiative was founded by leaders from the worlds of organizing, politics, and entertainment Alex Martínez Kondracke, America Ferrera, Carmen Perez, Christy Haubegger, Elsa Collins, Eva Longoria Bastón, Jess Morales Rocketto, Mónica Ramírez, Olga Segura, and Stephanie Valencia.

«This election year, everyone is reminded of the Latino population numbers and how fast we are growing as a community. But let’s be clear: demography is not destiny,» said activist, actress, producer, and director America Ferrera, «Unless and until we believe in our own potential and realize our own power, we will remain underrepresented as a political and cultural force.»

«This year, there are 32 million eligible Latino voters in the U.S., yet Latina turnout rates are 14 to 20 percent lower than non-Hispanic Black or white women,» according to Stephanie Valencia, co-founder and president of Equis Labs and Equis Research. «These women are turning out in lower numbers not because of apathy, but because they don’t feel certain they have the power to change their own lives, much less the outcome of an election.»

The mission of She Se Puede is to help Latinas realize and act on their own power. To achieve that mission, She Se Puede curates content for Latinas of all kinds by sharing relatable articles, videos, and photos celebrating stories of Latina achievement big and small. She Se Puede showcases a modern Latina lifestyle that includes health, parenting, food, beauty, and civic engagement. In addition to holding virtual events, the new online platform leverages text message notifications, weekly emails, and social media posts to share relatable news and content impacting Latinas.

«She Se Puede is a state of mind,» said activist, actress, producer, and director Eva Longoria. «So when we say empowerment, we mean we want Latinas to feel empowered in everything that they do, from their careers, to their workouts, to what food they eat, and even how they can request their mail-in ballot.»

She Se Puede was created after the founders gathered at the beginning of 2020 to discuss how they could take personal responsibility for encouraging Latinas to engage civically. That conversation was in the context of knowing that the experiences and perspectives of Latinas are too often excluded from society.

«From organizing rallies in support of Dreamers to ensuring farmworkers are equipped with masks and critical supplies, Latinas are changing this country for the better,» said activist, author, and civil rights attorney, Mónica Ramírez. «There are so many heroes among us, but too often our stories aren’t being told. She Se Puede is a platform that will amplify efforts that support Latinas and empower us all to feel confident that we can make change ourselves.»

She Se Puede is a community where Latinas can find information that addresses our unique needs and supports us to move ourselves, our communities, and our country forward.

CBT College continues to hold hybrid classes during the Fall semester

MIAMI, Aug. 31, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — In light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, CBT College started today the Fall semester via a hybrid academic model. MIAMI, Aug. 31, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — In light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, CBT College started today the Fall semester via a hybrid academic model. This learning approach allows students to get hands-on training in the recently updated College’s labs while receiving the lectures through the latest online resources.

(PRNewsfoto/CBT College)

Founded in 1988 by Gladys and Fernando Llerena, CBT College is a trade and vocational school that offers career training in Electricity, Refrigeration, Construction, Information Technology, and Health Information Management, among others. For the past 31 years, the school has evolved into a premier technical accredited and military-friendly institution with three campuses in Hialeah, Cutler Bay, and Flagler St. in Miami, Florida.

«None of us expected to live in a time like this,» said Mrs. Gladys Llerena, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors. «But besides these challenges produced by COVID-19, we are working together to continue reinforcing the Vision and Mission of CBT College. Now we are going for the upcoming 2020 Fall semester with better curriculum and technology techniques to fulfill our students’ expectations and improve our student’s outcomes.» Mrs. Llerena also highlighted the continued effort of the faculty and the staff «on this endless process of learning the new technology that will benefit our students and our community.»

With their students in mind and after four months of completely online distance education, «CBT College decided to transition from a fully online platform to a hybrid approach once it was allowed by Miami-Dade County and the State of Florida execution orders,» remarked Luis Llerena, President & CEO of CBT College. «We began offering lab training as of July 6th and continued to deliver the lecture portion using online platforms. As per CDC guidelines, we continue following social distancing and sanitizing practices throughout all our facilities,» he added.

The hybrid learning and teaching approach consists of a combination of remote and residential (in person) training, a type of education key in the line of the school’s academic model and success in teaching technology and trades-related careers. «For CBT College, most classes have a lecture component that is delivered online, while the hands-on portion of the class is delivered using the campus’s physical facilities,» said Hector Duenas, Director of Academic Operations. For online delivery, CBT has implemented a variety of techniques that allow students and faculty to have synchronous and asynchronous sections. The labs are already updated to comply with current sanitary regulations.

According to Llerena and Duenas, CBT College surveyed the student population after the first two weeks of the hybrid implementation. 80% expressed that they are learning as much with the approach and 76% would prefer to continue taking classes using this format, so «CBT College has decided to continue the hybrid approach on a permanent learning modality,» Llerena announced.

«As per the faculty, their level of satisfaction is high, and the main reason is the decision from CBT College to start the lab hours at the campuses, which is a key factor for students’ satisfaction,» continued Duenas.

The implementation of the hybrid approach and the changes produced by the COVID 19 crisis came with its challenges. «CBT College enrolls students with diverse backgrounds, whose need is to find skills to better their current situation,» stated Monica Llerena, Corporate Communications Officer. «The hybrid approach will give students the flexibility to continue to support their current needs while being able to pursue the opportunities to Be More. It will prepare students to be a more versatile learner in this advancing technology era due to this new normal,» she said.

In this sense, CBT College provided laptops to students who did not have a computer at home to help the student population adopt the new learning modality and get through these difficult times. Also, the Career Services department provides placement support for those students who lost their job and informational resources that could assist their families (such as food banks and testing information). Mr. Luis Llerena also noted that «Students received a stimulus check from the CARES grant that CBT College applied for and received the funding to help and support our community.»

FACILITIES PREPARATION

During the past months, CBT College has prepared the facilities in their three campuses following the CDC and local government agencies’ regulations. Their goal is for the students, staff, and faculty to be safe and at the same time to use technology to their advantage.

Maricel Spezzacatena, Chief Operations Officer, stated that the planning contemplated both the residential and the online learning environments. «We separated stations in the labs with Plexi Glass to provide more protection to the students and divided big groups into smaller groups to ensure social distancing. Besides, we have a system where we measure the temperature of all students coming to the school and provide a sticker if they are clear, so the faculty can look at the sticker and allow them to enter class. We change the sticker color every day.»

CBT also set a particular protocol to track students with symptoms or with the virus. In this regard, Mrs. Spezzacatena highlighted that «We are thinking outside the box and putting new things in place so students are not behind if they cannot be part of the rotation due to the COVID 19. The last implementation was live classes in the lab environment. Our Lead Instructors, alongside our professors, are recording the classes and doing live sessions for those who cannot come in person, so they don’t get behind. Lastly, we have increased the cleaning in high traffic areas.»

Regarding the overall operation, Spezzacatena indicated that CBT College is adjusting to the current situations and finding solutions that allow their business to operate efficiently. «At the staff level, we are maximizing the use of our current CRM Software to allow students to complete enrollment online. We are also looking for new software to automate processes and create workflows so our departments can provide a more efficient service to our students.»

EMPATHY AND COMMUNICATIONS

During the pandemic, CBT College launched the #CBTCollegeCares campaign, focused on providing students and Alumni the resources they might need to continue studying while dealing with the «new normal.» In this respect, the leader of the campaign, Mrs. Monica Llerena, indicated that «Empathy and communication are two words that have multitudes of layers. To reach a layer of understanding and collaboration between our students and teams has been a lesson for us. It is inspiring to witness how resilience can run alongside determination during this pandemic. Launching new virtual platforms was pinnacle on our successful retention of students and connecting with our community.»

During the upcoming months, CBT College plans to continue presenting virtual events such as Virtual Job Fairs and Virtual Open Houses (both in English and Spanish) to engage with students, alumni and business partners. «We strictly abide by our vision and mission when making decisions about enriching our students and redefining our Campuses’ safety,» stated Mr. Llerena to finish ensuring that CBT College will intentionally continue to focus on their student’s best interest.

About CBT College:

CBT College provides career training through a hands-on learning approach within the construction, technology, and allied health fields at its three locations across Miami-Dade County (Cutler Bay, Flagler, and Hialeah.) Over the past 31 years, the organization has graduated thousands of students into the Miami-Dade County workforce throughout more than 70 graduation ceremonies. The College’s involvement with employers, local organizations, and strategic business initiatives has opened up plenty of opportunities for our current students and graduates.

CBT College is also listed as a Military-friendly school and participates in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, as well as is approved by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to participate in the Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) to enroll International F-1 Visa students. The College is nationally accredited by ACICS, licensed by the Commission of Independent Education (CIE), and certified by the US Department of Education to receive Title IV funding.

BOSTON, Aug. 31, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The following statement is being issued by Professor Eric D. Green, Special Master for the Department of Justice’s Takata Airbag Individual Restitution Fund and Trustee of the Tort Compensation Trust Fund Created in the Takata Bankruptcy Cases.

Takata Defective Airbag Claims

Professor Eric D. Green, as Special Master and Trustee, announced a compensation program in May 2018 for individuals who have suffered or will suffer personal injury or wrongful death caused by the rupture or aggressive deployment of a Takata phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate airbag inflator (a «Takata Airbag Inflator Defect»).  Under that program, claimants may seek compensation from the Department of Justice’s $125 million Individual Restitution Fund («IRF») and/or the approximately $140 million Takata Airbag Tort Compensation Trust Fund («TATCTF»). The claim process is ongoing and eligible claimants still have time to act.

There are three types of claims that can be brought by individuals who suffered injury or wrongful death caused by a Takata Airbag Inflator Defect: (i) an «IRF Claim» against Takata for compensation from the IRF, the personal injury and wrongful death restitution fund overseen by the Special Master and established under the Restitution Order entered by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in connection with the Department of Justice’s criminal case against Takata, U.S. v. Takata Corporation, Case No. 16-cr-20810 (E.D. Mich.); (ii) a «Trust Claim» against Takata for compensation from the TATCTF, the personal injury and wrongful death trust fund overseen by the Trustee and established in connection with Takata’s Chapter 11 Plan of Reorganization in the Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, and (iii) a «POEM Claim» against a Participating Original Equipment Manufacturer (a «POEM;» presently the only POEM is Honda/Acura) for compensation from the POEM, which must be resolved through the TATCTF overseen by the Trustee.

Each of these three types of claims has its own eligibility requirements; however, each claim type covers only physical injuries and wrongful death resulting from a Takata Airbag Inflator Defect. Claims related to injuries or wrongful death caused by other airbag components — such as airbag failure to deploy, spontaneous airbag deployment, crash injuries unrelated to the inflator, or economic losses unrelated to physical injuries or death — are not covered by the three types of claims described above.

Individuals can access the claim forms, which include detailed instructions regarding how to file a claim, on the IRF website, www.takataspecialmaster.com, or on the TATCTF website, www.TakataAirbagInjuryTrust.com.

Oversight of the Claims Process and Resources for More Information

Professor Green was appointed by the District Court to serve as the Special Master overseeing IRF Claims and was appointed by the Bankruptcy Court to serve as the Trustee overseeing Trust Claims and POEM Claims.

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 31, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — «As a teacher I have experienced first-hand the faces of isolation on students who feel disconnected to the lessons and reading materials in their classrooms.»

This statement explains Carolyn Furlow’s motive as co-author of the new children’s book «The Sandbox: A Story of Inclusion and Embracing Differences,» which she wrote with her daughter Amelia Furlow.

In a spirit of love and high regard for all children, Carolyn and Amelia Furlow have created a series of stories which speaks to all children and allows them to feel connected to the stories they read in classrooms and at home.

«The world is a visible melting pot of beautiful children across the globe. Our stories reflect their presence and fosters acceptance and respect for differences,» they explained.

Amelia Furlow is a Marriage and Family intern. Recognizing a need for more diverse stories to be told within Children’s Books, she collaborated with her mother, Carolyn Furlow, to create a series that highlight the similarities as well as the individuality of human beings.

Carolyn Furlow received a Master of Arts degree in Creative Writing. «As a teacher, and mother of three and grandmother to one, I have discovered that children are more than likely to excel in their education when they read and identify with characters that look like them. The Sandbox is meant to celebrate the differences of all people,» she mentions.

The Foreword for the English version of The Sandbox was written by Michael Eric Dyson, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology at Georgetown, University, and author of Tears We Cannot Stop, among other books.

«Concepts at the beginning of a life can carry through a person’s lifetime. That is why it is critical to address simple messages of kindness and respect on the onset of children’s development,» said Doctor Dyson.

The Foreword for the Spanish version of The Sandbox was written by the winner of two Emmy Awards, Ana Lilia Cruz Hollingsworth.

«Inclusion and respect for others should be a natural habit in our homes, and as parents we have an obligation to show our children the incredible richness of differences from their first years of life, and this book shares this beautiful message,» points Cruz.

True-Crime Forensics Cases TV Series Premieres on Ultra Tainment

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida, Aug. 31, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Ultra Tainment, the HD Spanish-language pop culture channel that offers the best entertainment from Latin America and the United States, premieres Asesinato en la Mira (Spotlight Murder), an Austrian psychodrama-mystery TV series with the events of a real murder case with no happy ending, but for sure a roller-coaster news…

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida, Aug. 31, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Ultra Tainment, the HD Spanish-language pop culture channel that offers the best entertainment from Latin America and the United States, premieres Asesinato en la Mira (Spotlight Murder), an Austrian psychodrama-mystery TV series with the events of a real murder case with no happy ending, but for sure a roller-coaster news coverage.

Asesinato en la Mira (Spotlight Murder) is an eight-part crime reenactment series which combines the plot-driven narrative structure of a classic whodunit mystery, presented by the real investigators, crime scene technicians, and medical examiners in charge of the original cases. The unit investigation relates their impressions during the examination process and explains it step by step as a part of an exciting investigative journey.

Each episode is based on real murder case solved by the Vienna police. The real killers were convicted — hence the clear message of the series is that there is no perfect murder. At the end of the day, everyone makes a mistake. There is no happy ending. There is not even a sad ending, sometimes there is still no ending, but for sure there is always a vivid, exhaustive, and exhausting roller-coaster news coverage.

The series is a co-production by ORF and Interspot in association with Austrian Television Fund and Vienna Film Fund. The following true crime titles cover the nonfiction docuseries episodes of 42 minutes each: Deadly gamble, A perfect plan, frozen, missing, stab to heart, sadist, death cry, and lady-killer.

Ultra Tainment is owned and operated by Olympusat Inc., and it’s currently available on Claro and Hotwire Communications.

MADISON, Ill., Aug. 29, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ Scott Dixon vaulted into the lead following the final round of pit stops in today’s opening round in the doubleheader Bommarito Auto Group 500 race weekend, then held off a charging Takuma Sato to score Honda’s sixth NTT INDYCAR SERIES race victory of the season.

Scott Dixon won for the fourth time this year, and the sixth win for Honda in eight races, as he scored his 50th career victory today at World Wide Technology Raceway near St. Louis, Mo.

The win is Dixon’s fourth in eight races this season, and the 50th of his career, leading all active drivers. Honda, with six wins in 2020, now leads the INDYCAR Manufacturers’ Championship by 101 points over rival Chevrolet (688-579); while Dixon opens up a 117-point lead in the Drivers’ Championship, with 386 points to 269 for the second-ranked Josef Newgarden.

Today’s 200-lap contest started on a rough note, with three Honda drivers – Alexander Rossi, Zach Veach and Marco Andretti – among those eliminated in a multi-car crash just moments after race start.

After starting third, Dixon kept the leaders in sight throughout the first two-thirds of the race on the 1.25-mile oval.  Sato meanwhile, fell back to midfield in the early stages, but made improvements to the handling of his Rahal Letterman Lanigan Honda during each pit stop, and returned to contention for the win in the closing stages.

During the final round of pit stops on Lap 177, Dixon’s Chip Ganassi Racing team enabled him to leapfrog O’Ward for the lead, with Sato emerging in third.  Sato then executed a thrilling outside pass of O’Ward for second on Lap 179 and began his chase of Dixon for the victory. At the checkers, Dixon held on for the win by the narrow margin of just 14 hundredths of a second.

Behind the lead trio at the finish, Colton Herta continued his run of consistent results this year, ending the day fourth, with Markus Ericsson making it four Honda drivers in the top five at the checkers.

Quotes
Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) Started 3rd, finished 1st; scores his 50th career Indy car victory, his 4th and Honda’s 6th win of 2020; leads the NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship by 117 points after 8 races: «I can’t thank the PNC Bank crew enough. It was a superb race all day. I knew [Takuma] Sato was going to be strong at the end, but I didn’t realize how strong he was coming. We were kind of going into a reserve mode, looking after the engine, and he was there with a head of steam. [the margin of victory was just 0.1404 seconds] I am just so happy for this team. Last week at Indianapolis [when he finished second to Sato] was a bit of a bummer. So, it was nice to get a win. Fifty career-wins – that sounds awesome. We’ve got to keep on truckin’ and get a few more. But I can’t thank Honda and HPD enough. I’m proud to be powered by them.  What they’ve done, especially this year, is just phenomenal, and how quick their cars have been. This is just awesome.»

Takuma Sato (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Honda) Indianapolis 500 winner last weekend, started 5th, finished 2nd: «Obviously, the team did a fantastic job.  From last week [winning at Indianapolis], we carried a lot of momentum. We lost some places at the beginning of the race. I wasn’t entirely comfortable in the car. But we made improvements to the car at every [pit] stop, and by the end were strong. My Abeam car was phenomenal, and the Honda power was exceptional, again.  Big congrats to Ganassi and [Scott] Dixon. Fantastic win for them.»

Allen Miller (Race Team Principal, Honda Performance Development) on Saturday’s Honda win at WWT Raceway, Honda’s 6th win in 8 races this season: «Today’s final 50 laps looked like a continuation of last weekend’s Indianapolis 500, with Scott [Dixon] and Takuma [Sato] once more fighting for the victory.  Congratulations to Scott on his milestone 50th career Indy car victory, to Chip Ganassi Racing for their fifth win in eight races this season and to Takuma for a well-earned podium result following his win last week at Indy.  This has been an incredible season for Honda and everyone at Honda Performance Development should be proud of these achievements.»
