PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Portland General Electric (NYSE:POR) today announced that Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) has joined PGE’s Green FutureSM Impact program. Intel’s participation is enabling PGE to enter into a 15-year agreement with Avangrid Renewables, a subsidiary of AVANGRID, Inc. (NYSE:AGR), to purchase clean, emissions-free energy from a new 138-megawatt solar facility that will be developed in Wasco County, Oregon. Intel’s purchase is the single largest in PGE’s program; the company joins 17 other businesses and municipalities that have committed to purchase clean power through the Green Future Impact program, filling the program’s original 300-megawatt capacity.

Intel signed a 15-year agreement with PGE to enable the development of this additional new solar facility, which it is naming Daybreak Solar. It will produce a significant portion of the energy needed to power Intel’s advanced technology development and manufacturing facilities in Hillsboro, Oregon. Intel will be the only purchaser of power from this new facility and as part of the agreement, will also purchase and retire the associated renewable energy credits from Avangrid Renewables to improve the quality of its 100% renewable U.S. energy supply. Since 2004, Intel has been the largest purchaser of PGE’s Green Future Enterprise (formerly Clean Wind) product.

«Intel is excited to facilitate the construction of this new solar facility and provide our Oregon facilities with locally-based renewable energy,» said Marty Sedler, director of Global Utilities and Infrastructure for Intel Corp. «We are proud to extend our commitment to sustainability and to advancing Oregon’s economy.»

Avangrid Renewables will develop the 138-megawatt project in Wasco County, Oregon on 1,100 acres of privately owned land. During peak construction, it will create an estimated 150 to 200 jobs in partnership with local unions. When the facility begins operating in 2022, it will produce enough power to serve the equivalent of over 32,000 homes. It will benefit the local economy for years to come by generating an estimated $30 million of taxes and property owner lease payments over the life of the project.

«We are pleased to again partner with PGE as we continue to meet the growing clean energy demand of forward-thinking commercial customers in the Pacific Northwest,» said Holly Carias, vice president of origination for Avangrid Renewables. «This project represents an important step forward in the region’s clean energy transition.»

PGE’s agreement with Avangrid Renewables marks the second local renewable energy project made possible by Green Future Impact customers. In 2020, PGE and Avangrid Renewables announced the development of a 162-megawatt solar facility – the largest in Oregon – to meet the needs of 17 Green Future Impact subscribers. That project is expected to come online in late 2021.

«PGE is excited to work with Intel to enable their ambitious sustainability and climate goals through our Green Future Impact program,» said PGE vice president and Chief Customer Officer John McFarland. «Partnerships like this strengthen Oregon’s economy and also help advance PGE’s goal to reduce the emissions associated with the power we serve to customers by at least 80% by 2030. We look forward to working with Intel and Avangrid Renewables for years to come.»

PGE has requested approval from the Oregon Public Utility Commission to add 200 megawatts of installed renewables to the program to meet customer demand. More information about participating in Green Future Impact is available at  www.portlandgeneral.com/greenfutureimpact

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ –Two writers who have delved into the past and present challenges facing treasured places on the Southeast coast will receive the 2021 Phillip D. Reed Environmental Writing Awards from the Southern Environmental Law Center. SELC will present the awards March 25 during this year’s Virginia Festival of the Book.

In the book category, former Georgia state legislator Paul Bolster will receive the Reed Award for Saving the Georgia Coast: A Political History of the Coastal Marshlands Protection Act. In the journalism category, Tony Bartelme of The Post and Courier in Charleston will receive the Reed Award for his in-depth reporting on South Carolina’s coastal environment, including communities where the damaging impacts of climate change are happening now.

The featured speaker for the Reed Award presentation will be Lulu Miller, co-host of WNYC Studios’ Radiolab and author of the widely acclaimed Why Fish Don’t Exist, a nonfiction scientific thriller and memoir. The free, online event will be at 2 p.m. Eastern Time. To register to receive a link to the Zoom session, visit www.southernenvironment.org/reedaward/.

This Year’s Book Award Winner: Paul Bolster

In Saving the Georgia Coast, published by the University of Georgia Press, Paul Bolster brings to life the unlikely coalition of local residents, wealthy landowners, hunters and anglers, garden club members, courageous politicians and others who came together more than 50 years ago to defend Georgia’s unspoiled coastal marshlands. At the same time, he traces the intricate legislative maneuvers that resulted in passage of the 1970 Coastal Marshlands Protection Act, a law that remains the most comprehensive protection of marshlands along the Atlantic seaboard.

Bolster, who served a diverse Atlanta district in the Georgia House of Representatives for 12 years, does more than look back at this landmark legislative achievement. He also examines the policy challenges facing the Georgia coast today, among them how to address unrelenting development pressures and how to deal with rising sea levels and other impacts of a warming planet. He continues to follow environmental legislation in the state capitol and feels that lawmakers could look to the lessons from 50 years ago as a guide to protecting Georgia’s fragile coast today.

A free-lance writer and historian, Bolster holds a Ph.D. degree in history from the University of Georgia and a law degree from Georgia State University School of Law. He taught American history at Clark Atlanta University for 14 years and has worked as a lobbyist for the Georgia Hospital Association and the American Hospital Association. A tireless advocate for affordable housing, he ran a Health Care for the Homeless program in Atlanta and served for three years on Governor Nathan Deal’s Council on Criminal Justice Reform.

This Year’s Journalism Award Winner: Tony Bartelme

Tony Bartelme, a special projects reporter for The Post and Courier, is being recognized in part for his stories from the Rising Waters Project, a series documenting how the accelerating forces of climate change are affecting Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry. Bartelme explains not only the science behind wetter hurricanes, intense «rain bomb» events and flooding high tides, but also the policy issues they raise and how they are making life harder for many South Carolinians. In other pieces recognized by this year’s award, Bartelme displays a gift for linking science with sense of place. These include a story tracing the human and natural history of South Carolina’s Santee Delta, and another on the quest by researchers to learn more about an elusive and rapidly disappearing marshland bird, the eastern black rail.

A graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Bartelme is a three-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and has won some of the highest honors in journalism. He was awarded a prestigious Harvard University Nieman Fellowship in 2010.  His investigative reporting has exposed government corruption and has explored subjects ranging from changes in ocean plankton to the global shortage of doctors. His latest book, A Surgeon in the Village: An American Doctor Teaches Brain Surgery in Africa, was published by Beacon Press.

This Year’s Featured Speaker: Lulu Miller

Lulu Miller is a Peabody Award-winning science journalist who fell hard for radio when she joined the staff of WNYC Studios’ Radiolab, initially as a volunteer. She returned to the show as co-host this past year. She is also co-founder of NPR’s Invisibilia, a show about the invisible forces that shape human behavior. Her book Why Fish Don’t Exist has been hailed as a wondrous debut and was listed among the best books of 2020 by The Washington Post, NPR, Chicago Tribune and Smithsonian. It follows the life of taxonomist David Starr Jordan—the first president of Stanford University and a proponent of the eugenics movement—and reveals both the triumphs and the dark side of his relentless search for order in a chaotic world. Her book is also a deeply personal story about how to go on when everything seems lost. Miller is a graduate of Swarthmore College and earned an MFA in fiction writing from the University of Virginia.

ATLANTA, Feb. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Southern Company and its Southern Company Gas subsidiary have helped to start a new research and development (R&D) initiative, known as HyBlend, to address the technical barriers to blending hydrogen in natural gas infrastructure and study life-cycle emissions of hydrogen blends. As the leading energy industry sponsor, Southern Company Gas will spearhead the initiative. The HyBlend project will utilize expertise in Southern Company’s industry-leading R&D organization, along with industry partners, research consortia, academia and national laboratories, and encompass more than $15 million in hydrogen research.

«Natural gas is a critical partner in the growth of renewables as we foresee numerous opportunities to leverage our existing infrastructure to support clean energy, such as hydrogen,» said Dr. Mark S. Berry, vice president of R&D at Southern Company. «Emerging technologies such as hydrogen will be key as we work to achieve our enterprise-wide goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.»

Introducing hydrogen into existing natural gas infrastructure has national and regional benefits for energy storage, resiliency and emissions reductions. Hydrogen can be produced by splitting water molecules with renewable, nuclear or other sources of energy. This hydrogen could be injected into natural gas infrastructure, and the blend of hydrogen and natural gas can then be transported to end users of the fuel.

«We are uniquely positioned to develop the technology and infrastructure needed to produce and distribute hydrogen into our system,» said Zachary Lowe, director at Southern Company Gas. «Blending hydrogen into existing natural gas infrastructure enables us to further understand the infrastructure’s capabilities, which is essential for achieving carbon reduction goals.»

This two-year project was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy through the H2@Scale 2020 CRADA Call.

The HyBlend team is comprised of six DOE national laboratories ― National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, and the National Energy Technology Laboratory ― and more than 20 participants from industry and academia.

«We’re working with industry to answer their high-priority research questions,» said Michael Peters, HyBlend project engineer at National Renewable Energy Laboratory. «First, are pipelines compatible with hydrogen? Second, what are the costs and environmental impacts? And finally, how will hydrogen blends affect appliances and other equipment in buildings?»

The areas of research include studying life-cycle emissions of hydrogen blends and techno-economic analysis of the costs and opportunities of hydrogen production. The project will leverage DOE’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office’s Hydrogen Materials Compatibility Consortium, led by SNL and PNNL, which is an internationally recognized framework for the study of hydrogen–materials compatibility.

Southern Company is committed to collaborating with industry partners to advance global, economy-wide carbon reduction. The company’s participation in HyBlend is one of several R&D initiatives underway to investigate hydrogen’s potential. Other efforts include serving as an anchor sponsor for the Low-Carbon Resources Initiative and investigating the compatibility of hydrogen with Southern Company Gas subsidiary Atlanta Gas Light’s existing infrastructure, in collaboration with four national laboratories. In addition, Southern Company is assessing metering and regulating infrastructure’s hydrogen compatibility with the Electric Power Research Institute. These research projects contribute to Southern Company Gas’ effort to help deliver a clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy future for its customers and communities.

FREMONT, Calif., Feb. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Power Knot LLC, the market leader for on site organic waste management solutions announced today that it has fulfilled additional orders for LFC® biodigesters to Canada’s Department of National Defence, (Le ministère de la Défense nationale, DND). Recent orders for machines add to orders shipped in 2020 and demonstrate the DND’s commitment to Power Knot’s solutions.

The Canadian government has a strong mandate to reduce carbon emissions and is pushing changes through all governmental agencies. Sending organic waste to a landfill is recognized globally as having a huge negative impact on the environment. After extensive evaluation of all alternatives, the Canadian DND settled on Power Knot’s LFC biodigesters to help combat climate change. With deployment across military bases throughout Canada, the DND now has purchased six different sizes of LFC biodigesters.

«The ongoing orders from the DND affirm that Power Knot’s food digesters are best in the market. In addition to reducing greenhouse gasses, our LFC biodigesters are improving operations and reducing costs for the Canadian military,» said Iain Milnes, President at Power Knot. «There are also added benefits of reduced manual labor and improved cleanliness which makes day to day work easier. We look forward to building on our relationship with the DND to help drive their zero food waste initiatives.»

About the LFC Biodigester
The LFC® Biodigester is a machine that digests food waste. These machines are usually installed in a commercial kitchen and reduces the expense, inconvenience, mess, and carbon footprint of disposing of food waste that would otherwise be hauled to a landfill. Power Knot has eight different sizes that digest from 20 lb (10 kg) per day to 4000 lb (1800 kg) per day of food waste. With many hundreds of installations globally, the LFC Biodigester has proven to be reliable, safe, and cost effective.

About Power Knot
Power Knot provides safe and economically sound solutions for commercial, industrial, and military customers globally seeking to reduce their carbon footprint. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and Community Health Centers Team Up to Address Barriers to COVID Vaccine Access

BOSTON, Feb. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts («Blue Cross»)…

BOSTON, Feb. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts («Blue Cross») today announced a new effort with the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers («the League») to help provide equitable access to COVID-19 vaccinations.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts

Blue Cross will contribute $1 million to fund free rides to and from COVID-19 vaccination sites across the state to support community health centers, underserved communities, and vulnerable populations. The new initiative was announced during a press conference today with Governor Charlie Baker at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center.

«The goal now is to get people vaccinated, and access to those appointments is critical,» said Andrew Dreyfus, Blue Cross’ president and CEO. «We know lack of access to transportation is a significant barrier in communities hard hit by COVID-19. The Community Health Centers’ deep experience will help connect more of our neighbors with vaccines that can save lives and help end the pandemic.»

Blue Cross’ contribution will support tens of thousands of free rides to and from COVID-19 vaccination sites. The goal is to launch the program in the next few weeks in coordination with the League, which will assist in identifying participating community health centers.

«I’ve always said those closest to the disease need to be closest to the vaccine. Members of the communities we serve have disproportionately contracted, suffered, and died from this terrible virus,» said Michael Curry, president and CEO of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers and a member of the state’s COVID-19 Vaccine Advisory Group. «We are proud to partner with Blue Cross to help bring our patients better access to these life-saving vaccines.»

«Since the pandemic started, we have been on the frontlines, providing COVID-19 testing and treatment throughout the local community,» said Manny Lopes, president and CEO of the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center. «Now, we are on the frontlines of the vaccination effort too. We welcome this new initiative, which will make it easier for our most vulnerable patients to get the vaccinations they desperately need.»

Blue Cross and the League will work together toward their mutual goal of addressing disparities in access to COVID-19 vaccinations in underserved communities throughout Massachusetts. The organizations are looking at a variety of options which may include grants to community health centers, partnering with a ride share program, and other potential transportation solutions.

Today’s contribution comes on top of the $11 million Blue Cross and its Foundation has invested in the community during the COVID-19 crisis.
