The organic breakfast company partners with the zero-waste shopping platform as it launches in Ontario

TORONTO, Feb. 1, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Nature’s Path, North America’s largest organic breakfast cereal and snack food company, is thrilled to announce its expanded partnership with Loop as the global reuse platform launches its service in Canada.

Initially rolling out across most of Ontario, Loop customers will now be able to shop for a wide variety of food and household products from trusted brands – like Nature’s Path – in durable, reusable packaging.

Loop consumers can order through www.loopstore.ca and pay a deposit on each package which is fully refundable when it is returned. After use, consumers simply place the empty containers back into the Loop Tote and return the tote by scheduling a free pickup online or dropping it off at one of the more than 500 participating retail locations in Ontario. Nature’s Path will offer its Pumpkin Flax Granola through Loop in reusable jars and has plans to eventually increase its available product line.

«We were honoured to be one of the first companies, and the first organic food producer, to join Loop on its journey of reducing global waste. As a Canadian company, we are even more excited to expand our partnership with Loop as it takes its first step towards reducing waste here in Canada,» says Jyoti Stephens, VP Mission and Strategy for Nature’s Path.

As part of Nature’s Path’s mission to always leave the earth better than they found it, the company first joined Loop as one of its founding partners when the platform launched in New York City in May of 2019. Since then, Loop has expanded across the United States as well as into the United Kingdom and France.

«Nature’s Path is Loop’s ideal partner; a company truly committed to zero waste.  Its ongoing work to better the planet is an inspiration and should be an example to other companies that a successful business along with sustainability is not only doable, but profitable.» Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of Loop and TerraCycle.

Nature’s Path is deeply committed to sustainability. The company was the first North American food producer to achieve zero-waste certification at all its manufacturing facilities, and is committed to all its packaging being reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 (and it’s already 97% of the way there by weight.) Nature’s Path estimates that one reusable jar of its Loop granola will save more than 4 kilos (9 pounds) of waste generated from 100 boxes of granola.

«We are always working to improve and reduce our packaging footprint,» says Stephens. «We really value what Loop is trying to achieve, and truly believe it represents the future of consumer goods. People want the reduce the amount of waste they are generating, and Nature’s Path is proud to be at the forefront of this movement.»

TransAlta Completes First Off-Coal Conversion and Achieves Major Milestone in Phase Out of Coal

CALGARY, AB, Feb. 1, 2021 /PRNewswire/ – TransAlta Corporation (TSX: TA) (NYSE: TAC) («TransAlta» or the «Company») announced today that it has completed the first of three planned coal-to-gas («CTG») boiler conversions at its Sundance and Keephills power generation facilities near Wabamun, Alberta.

«The full conversion of Sundance Unit 6 from thermal coal to natural gas is a significant landmark…

«The full conversion of Sundance Unit 6 from thermal coal to natural gas is a significant landmark for TransAlta on its journey to transition off coal towards 100 per cent clean electricity,» says Dawn Farrell, President and CEO of TransAlta. «Converting to natural gas from coal reduces our CO2 emissions by half from approximately 1.05 tonnes CO2e per MWh to approximately 0.52 tonnes CO2e per MWh in 2021, and highlights TransAlta’s commitment to meet our own, and our customers’, E2SG needs.»

With $35 million invested in the Sundance Unit 6 («Sun-6») boiler conversion and another $50 million for upgrades to the unit’s Distributed Control System and scheduled major maintenance, the $85 million total investment in the project is also a significant boost to the economy, locally and across Canada. At its peak, nearly 700 additional jobs were created to complete the Sun-6 conversion, system upgrades and maintenance projects.

In 2021, TransAlta will complete its second and third CTG conversions with Keephills Unit 2 by mid-June, followed by Keephills Unit 3 by mid-December. In addition, TransAlta will have significantly advanced the repowering of its Sundance 5 unit into a highly efficient combined-cycle facility. By January 1, 2022, TransAlta’s Alberta thermal fleet will be fueled completely by natural gas and entirely off coal. Once converted to gas, the units are anticipated to be able to run through to 2031 to 2039 – a significant lengthening of their asset lives.

TransAlta is on track to reduce its emissions by more than 70 per cent from 2005 levels by the end of 2022. This achievement, coupled with TransAlta’s diversified generating portfolio, including extensive hydro and wind assets, positions the Company to be a highly competitive provider of low carbon electricity for the market and its customers.

About TransAlta:
TransAlta owns, operates and develops a diverse fleet of electrical power generation assets in Canada, the United States and Australia with a focus on long-term shareholder value. TransAlta provides municipalities, medium and large industries, businesses and utility customers with clean, affordable, energy efficient and reliable power. Today, TransAlta is one of Canada’s largest producers of wind power and Alberta’s largest producer of hydro-electric power. For over 100 years, TransAlta has been a responsible operator and a proud community-member where its employees work and live. TransAlta aligns its corporate goals with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and has been recognized by CDP (formerly Climate Disclosure Project) as an industry leader on Climate Change Management, having recently achieved an A- score from CDP.

LONDON, Feb. 1, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — With demand currently outstripping supply, particularly for food grade packaging plastics, many FMCGs, manufacturers and converters are finding sourcing the feedstock they require to hit regulatory and sustainability goals challenging. Sourcing recycled resins in a growing, opaque, and increasingly competitive market has proven to be difficult across the packaging sector. Driven by regulation and consumer pressure, it remains one of the industry’s most pressing challenges.

To assist the industry, ICIS has developed the Recycling Supply Tracker that allows companies looking to source recycled plastic to quickly gain a comprehensive view of the sector and identify new supplier relationships, as well as take a strategic view on existing and announced projects. The global database provides information on production capacities, output volumes, feedstock source and site status, and is designed to bring transparency and support the transition to a circular economy.

The Recycling Supply Tracker follows four grades of recycled plastic – high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polypropylene (PP) – in pellet, flake and regrind forms. The tracker has details on more than 1800 medium and large recycling facilities around the world.

The Recycling Supply Tracker has information on where the plants are located, what products they produce, and how much of those products they produce, as well how to contact them. Interactive filters allow the search to be narrowed by region, particular country, or a specific product. It also shows whether the plant is in operation, under construction, or announced. Further filters on specifics such as product colour and its feedstock source are also available, giving users the most comprehensive view of recycled plastics market.

«The tracker is designed to help companies source recycled resins globally, tackling one of the biggest challenges we know the industry is facing,» Louise Boddy, Head of Strategy – Sustainability at ICIS said. «We bridge the gap between companies’ sustainability targets and actually finding supplies of recycled plastic on the ground in markets that remain fragmented and unfamiliar to many.  Our recycling analysts scour the world to find recycling plants that can support the circular economy and help those who want to increase their use of these environmentally friendly materials.»

Even in Europe, where regulators are pushing the hardest for circularity of plastics, it is becoming clear that not enough recycled material is available to hit these targets. And many consumer brands have even more aggressive targets than the regulation. Seeing the extent and location of the world’s recycling infrastructure with this tool enables regulators, investors and companies to see where the capacity is lacking and how fast it is being built. Having on the ground data is a crucial step to stimulating this sector and bringing more waste plastic back into the economy.

Study: Estonia’s Geology Holds Promise for Nuclear Waste Disposal

LONDON, Feb. 1, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — A new Deep Isolation study commissioned by advanced reactor deployment company Fermi Energia discusses the potential suitability of areas in Estonia considered for siting a deep horizontal borehole repository for nuclear waste. This preliminary study found no fundamental geologic limitations to disposing of nuclear waste in deep horizontal boreholes and that a wide range of locations could be demonstrated to comply with IAEA Safety Regulations for geologic disposal.

The study is a qualitative geological assessment of Estonia’s crystalline basement rock that evaluates geological conditions and potential risk factors for Estonia’s 15 counties, screening their potential for hosting a deep borehole repository. Such a repository would isolate radioactive elements from the Earth’s surface for 1.3 million years. At that point, any elements that might reach the surface would be three orders of magnitude below levels deemed safe and allowable by international safety standards.

With Estonia aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 70 percent by 2030, advanced nuclear power generation from small modular reactors (SMRs) could contribute to Estonia’s carbon-neutral future. Yet the unresolved issue of how to permanently dispose of spent nuclear fuel is a major obstacle to deploying nuclear energy worldwide.

«If we are to be successful in our efforts to see Estonia become the first European Union country to deploy an SMR in the 2030s, it is important that we take responsibility now in planning for spent fuel disposal,» said Kalev Kallemets, CEO of Fermi Energia, an emerging company of nuclear and energy professionals founded to deploy SMRs in Estonia. «This Deep Isolation study indicates that a deep borehole disposal repository could meet all prerequisites and be safe and cost-effective as well as easily deployed and scalable.»

There are about 50 small modular reactor designs and concepts being developed globally, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Deep Isolation is partnering with the advanced nuclear sector to explore the important role that borehole disposal can play. For example, a recent study published by the Electric Power Research Institute showed that locating a deep borehole repository at the site of a hypothetical advanced reactor in the southeastern United States could be both safe and cost-effective. Fermi Energia is the first European company to contract with Deep Isolation on a preliminary geologic study to manage advanced reactor waste.

«As Estonia considers the role that advanced nuclear power generation can play in delivering a low-carbon future for the country, citizens and policymakers can feel confident there is a safe and affordable way to dispose of the resulting spent nuclear fuel,» says Chris Parker, Managing Director, Deep Isolation EMEA Limited. «We applaud Fermi Energia for doing the right thing by planning for disposal of the nuclear waste up front. This is a significant step forward in confirming that regions across Estonia, in particular along the northern coast near a potential SMR site, could potentially safely host a borehole repository.»

While countries such as Finland, Sweden and France are building mined repositories for nuclear waste, a deep horizontal borehole solution in Estonia would isolate the waste much deeper — at 1,500 meters vs. about 500 meters — and would be about a quarter of the cost, according to recent research on the U.S. market undertaken by Deep Isolation in collaboration with U.S. advanced nuclear companies and the Electronic Power Research Institute. Deep boreholes are more quickly deployed, given that drilling can be done in weeks, while mining can take years and even decades. As the geology near the potential Estonian SMR site appears suitable for disposal, the costs and risks of transporting waste long distances can be avoided. And they’re likely safer because there are no workers underground.

Deep Isolation’s solution would place the waste in corrosion-resistant canisters within deep boreholes drilled into rock formations that have been isolated from the biosphere for a million years or more. The waste can be retrieved during a determined timeframe or permanently secured.

The study was conducted in collaboration with Engineering Bureau STEIGER LLC, Estonia’s foremost geologic and drilling company.

Deep Isolation will present the results of this study as part of Fermi Energia’s one-day SMR conference, New Generation Nuclear Energy in Estonia, on Feb. 9. Please register here.

PERTH, Australia, Jan. 31, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — A network of regional hydrogen technology clusters has today been unveiled across Australia, as part of a drive to establish a nationwide hydrogen cluster.

Spearheaded by National Energy Resources Australia (NERA), the national cluster (which would operate as a virtual network) will establish a global identity and a recognised brand for Australian hydrogen technology and expertise. It will also aid the development of the hydrogen supply chain, reduce overlaps and identify gaps in the development, deployment, and commercialisation of new hydrogen focused technologies.

The establishment of the regional hydrogen technology clusters announced today – which cover all of Australia’s states and territories – follows the conclusion of a seed funding selection program started by NERA in September. NERA has also been able to leverage a range of funding commitments from state and territory governments around the country, as well as industry financial support.

NERA CEO Miranda Taylor said today’s announcement was a crucial step in building the skills, capacities and commercialisation opportunities necessary to unlock Australia’s enormous potential to create a globally competitive hydrogen industry that, according to a 2019 Deloitte report, could increase Australia’s GDP up to $26 billion.

«Today marks a great step forward in Australia’s capability in developing hydrogen technologies. These regional clusters, all of which have the support of their state and territory governments, have been established around key, existing hydrogen projects and technology supply chains in strategic locations that have a demonstrated capacity to support them.

«This will ensure long-term local cohesion and sustainable capability across the emerging hydrogen value chain.»

The development of a national hydrogen cluster was identified by the 2019 National Hydrogen Strategy as an important component to scale up Australia’s domestic industry to become a global hydrogen competitor.

Today’s announcement continues NERA’s active role in coordinating collaborative opportunities to realise Australia’s hydrogen potential across the hydrogen value chain and ensure that Australian companies are well placed to supply new technology, products and services to domestic and international markets.

HOUSTON, Jan. 31, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Traditional vibrating screen only has the vibrating separation function. GN new technology vacuum vibrating screen is a combination of vibrating separation and vacuum separation. The new combined machine improves the dewatering efficiency dramatically.

GN Vacuum Vibrating Screen to Increase Dewatering Efficiency
The purpose of using the dewatering vibrating screen is to separate the solid and liquid. In normal condition, the separated solids and liquid will be further treated or used for other application directly. Thus the drier the slag discharged from the vibrating screen, the more liquid will be recovered. In order to increase the recovery efficiency of the liquid, GN developed the vacuum vibrating screen that is a combination of vibrating screen and vacuum unit. By installing a collecting hopper under the last screen of the machine and connecting it to vacuum device to form a certain frequency of vacuum suction on the screen surface with pulsating airflow, the vacuum vibrating screen achieves double separation by vibration and vacuum suction. It increases the recovery efficiency of liquid and reduces the liquid content on discharged solids.

GN Vacuum Vibrating Screen Components
1. Vibrating Screen;
2. Vacuum collecting Hopper;
3. Vacuum Device.

GN vacuum device can be connected to maximum 3 units vibrating screens. It matches with GN single-layer high frequency vibrating screen, tandem deck vibrating screen and parallel deck vibrating screen, etc.

A. No.1 Vibrating Screen connecting pipe;
B. No. 2 Vibrating Screen connecting pipe;
C, No. 3 Vibrating Screen connecting pipe;
D. Air Inlet of Vacuum Device

Typical Application of GN Vacuum Vibrating Screen
GN vacuum vibrating screen is often used for drilling mud dewatering. In the drilling industry, the vibrating screen is also called shale shaker. It is used to remove the cuttings in drilling mud to make the mud reusable. The vacuum vibrating screen can greatly increase mud recovery and reduce drilling waste discharge, which is cost saving for driller and environmental friendly operation.

Beside Vacuum dewatering vibrating screen, GN also provides traditional industrial vibrating screen for other application. Industrial vibrating screen is one of GN main series products. It is widely used as dewatering vibrating screen or classifying vibrating screen in environmental protection industry, mining industry, petroleum industry, construction industry and chemical industries, etc. The screen deck is connected with the equipment base via vibrating springs. With the exciting force generated by the vibrator eccentric block during the rotation, the screen deck vibrates along a certain track that is also called vibration mode. GN Industrial Vibrating Screen can achieve linear vibration mode and elliptical vibration mode through different design. According to working condition and customer requirements, GN launched the vibrating screen of following design: High Frequency Vibrating Screen, Tandem Deck Vibrating Screen, Parallel Deck Vibrating Screen and Vacuum Vibrating Screen. In order to get the better separation performance and prevent the screen blocking, GN always recommends the high frequency vibrating screen. GN is able to provide screens with different openings and different materials to meet the requirements of solid-liquid wet screening and solid particle dry screening.

GN Vibrating Screen for Sludge Dewatering Application
GN is known as a solution provider of solid-liquid separation or sludge dewatering. Therefore, GN vibrating screen is mostly applied for sludge dewatering. Besides the vibrating screen, GN has some other sludge dewatering equipment like the decanter centrifuge and the screw press unit. In some sludge dewatering project, the solid size distribution ranges from microns to centimeters. The dewatering vibrating screen is always used as the primary separation equipment for coarse solids removing. Normally, to protect the subsequent separation equipment, a dewater vibrating screen for fine solids separation will be installed after the primary vibrating screen to form a step by step sludge dewatering process. According to different type sludge and solids size, GN is able to provide the screens with different openings and materials like wedge wire screen panel, polyurethane screen panel and stainless steel wire mesh screens.
