LAGUNA BEACH, Calif., March 5, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Laguna Residents First (LRF)–an organization working on a ballot initiative giving residents the right to approve or deny major commercial projects–is collecting pre-registration information.

«Voters who are interested in Laguna’s smart growth initiative can add their email address online now and they’ll be notified when the actual signature gathering process begins said Chris Catsimanes, the board’s newest member. «It takes less than a minute. Eventually, we’ll need at least 1,700 signatures. In a town of 23,000, the more people we can sign up now, the easier it will be down the road.»

The initiative addresses commercial projects within 750 feet of Coast Highway or Laguna Canyon Road; that are larger than 22,000 square feet, or that add more than 200 car trips a day or that exceed the city’s 36-foot height limit. The small seaside community is well known for its dramatic coastline, art festivals and historic character. Costa Mesa, Newport Beach and Dana Point have passed similar initiatives in recent years.

Officer and co-founder David Raber emphasized that even in a pandemic, the organization’s critical conservation efforts continue. «We especially need donations now to support the ongoing work to qualify the Initiative for the ballot in 2022. No amount is too small so, if you’ve ever visited Laguna and love it, now’s a great time to help out.»

DALY CITY, Calif., March 4, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Today, San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera announced a $100 million settlement to be paid by Recology to its rate payers in connection to an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption committed by former Director of the Department of Public Works, Mohammed Nuru. The following is an official statement from Teamsters Local Union 350 Secretary-Treasurer John Bouchard on the settlement.

«Teamsters Local 350 is proud of the work our members do at Recology to help protect public health and keep our city beautiful,» said Local 350 Secretary-Treasurer John Bouchard. «We were angered to hear about the alleged corruption within the Department of Public Works and that a member of management at one of our largest employers was allegedly involved. We believe it’s the right course of action to refund the customers through this settlement.»

More than 10,000 Teamsters members who live in San Francisco are among the rate payers anticipated to be reimbursed in this settlement.

Bouchard added, «The alleged actions of Recology management should not reflect in any way on the hardworking Teamsters who show up every day at San Francisco homes and businesses to keep our city clean. We expect Recology management to fully ‘own’ this incident, and that this justifiable resolution will in no way negatively impact our members who continue to be the lifeblood of this company.»

Teamsters Local Union 350 represents 900 sanitation workers at Recology throughout San Francisco, providing professional recycling and trash removal services to hundreds of thousands of San Franciscans each day.

WASHINGTON, March 4, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Today the Senate introduced a modified version of President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan, including critical funding for local governments. The Senate version of the bill preserves this important component of the plan, which American mayors have been calling for since last spring. To date, most American cities have been left behind in Washington’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, but this plan will finally provide relief to cities that have suffered painful budget shortfalls as a direct result of the crisis. In response to the Senate moving forward on this revised bill, U.S. Conference of Mayors President and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer released the following statement:

«America’s mayors are grateful that Leader Schumer and other Senate leaders are keeping their promise to support the cities that have been on the frontlines of this pandemic. The crisis has taken a painful toll on local governments, municipal workers, and the millions of Americans who rely on essential city services. The bill introduced in the Senate today will make cities safer and healthier, keep cops and other essential workers on the job, and allow cities to help drive an equitable economic recovery for the country. For the first time in a long time, there is real reason for optimism that this pandemic can soon be behind us, but there is still significant work to be done. This bill is critical to being able to turn the page and move us forward, and we urge the Senate and House to move quickly to send it to the president’s desk.»

About the United States Conference of Mayors — The U.S. Conference of Mayors is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. Emergency Physicians Welcome Reintroduction of Bill to Protect Frontline Workers’ Mental Health

WASHINGTON, March 4, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) applauds the reintroduction of the bipartisan «Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act» and strongly supports its timely passage into law.

«Emergency physicians and other health care workers risk their lives every day to protect patients and this bill ensures that our heroes on the frontlines can seek mental health care if they need it,» said Mark Rosenberg, DO, MBA, FACEP, president of ACEP. «Dr. Lorna Breen’s legacy will extend long after this pandemic is over. The bill carrying her name will be a lifeline for emergency physicians who absorb extraordinary levels of grief, anxiety and other stressors but feel their only option is to struggle in silence.»

ACEP is grateful for the leadership of Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA), Todd Young (R-IN), Jack Reed (D-RI), and Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), and Representatives Susan Wild (D-PA), David McKinley (R-WV), Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), Fred Upton (R-MI), Judy Chu (D-CA), Morgan Griffith (R-VA), Haley Stevens (D-MI), and John Katko (R-NY) for their commitment to prioritizing care for the health professionals that courageously put the needs of patients first. This bipartisan bill is also a testament to the tireless work of the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation and its mission to provide mental health support for the heroes on the frontlines.

The «Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act» authorizes funding for mental and behavioral health training and services for health care professionals, supports education campaigns to encourage healthier work conditions, and calls for research on causes of physician burnout and its impact, among other provisions.

Despite the prevalence of mental health concerns in the health care workforce, there is a legitimate fear of consequences that deters many physicians from getting the care they need.

statement developed by ACEP with more than 40 leading medical organizations outlines recommendations for removing existing barriers to seeking treatment, including the fear of reprisal, and encouraging professional support and non-clinical mental health initiatives, such as peer support, for physicians. ACEP also supports the Joint Commission’s stance that history of mental illness should not be used as an indication of a health professionals’ current or future ability to practice medicine.

And, for its members, ACEP offers free mental health counseling sessions, peer-to-peer support, meditation guides and other resources.

«Changes to the culture of medicine will not happen overnight,» said Dr. Rosenberg. «But the pandemic is shining a light on the urgent need to protect physician mental health and address contributing factors to burnout and stress that have been pushed under the rug for too long. We must take this opportunity to overcome real barriers to physician well-being, including stigma, that prevent physicians from seeking mental health care.»

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) is the national medical society representing emergency medicine. Through continuing education, research, public education, and advocacy, ACEP advances emergency care on behalf of its 40,000 emergency physician members, and the more than 150 million Americans they treat on an annual basis.
