New Study Finds Tremendous Unmet Need for Afterschool Programs in the Latinx Community, With 6.5 Million Hispanic Children Without the Access to Afterschool Their Parents Want

WASHINGTON, Jan. 15, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Satisfaction with afterschool programs has reached a new high among Latinx parents, but limited access, unmanageable costs, and other barriers are preventing many Hispanic students from participating. A new household survey commissioned by the Afterschool Alliance and conducted by Edge Research finds that, for every Hispanic child in an afterschool program today, three more are waiting to get in.

America After 3PM finds that the families of 24.6 million children in the United States — more than ever before — are unable to access an afterschool program and many report that cost is a barrier. America After 3PM exposes significant inequities, with the parents of 55% of Latinx, 58% of Black, and 46% of white children not currently in an afterschool program saying they would enroll their child if they could.

The new study finds that, due to barriers including access, cost, and transportation, the number of Latinx children in afterschool programs has declined from 3.8 million in 2014 to less than 2.3 million today. The decline means more Hispanic students are without the critical supports that can help them succeed. It also signals that, while publicly funded afterschool programs have helped millions of students, public dollars are not nearly sufficient to keep up with demand today.

The study is based on responses from more than 30,000 U.S. families, including 4,393 Hispanic respondents. Building on household surveys conducted in 2004, 2009 and 2014, it offers a pre-pandemic snapshot of how children and youth spend their afternoons and has significant implications for our post-pandemic world. It also includes a separate survey of parents conducted this fall; in it, more than three in five Latinx parents (61%) report stress about providing learning support while their child’s school is operating virtually – a significantly higher percentage than parents overall (54%).

«In this survey, Latinx parents report that afterschool programs are doing stellar work in helping meet many of their children’s academic, social/emotional and other needs. But investments in afterschool have not kept up with demand, and that puts millions of children and youth at risk. The pandemic, which is taking an especially high toll on communities of color, is exacerbating the harm,» said Afterschool Alliance Executive Director Jodi Grant. «Quality afterschool programs are essential to student success in school and life. If we want to emerge from this pandemic strong, we need to provide all our children and youth access to the enrichment opportunities and resources afterschool programs provide. We’re not doing that now, and Latinx families are among those who are struggling even more as a result.»

CINCINNATI, Jan. 15, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — As Procter & Gamble executives took center stage at CES 2021 this week to tout their sustainability initiatives, youth activists upset over the company’s greenwashing have been overwhelming social media platforms TikTok and Instagram to air their grievances in dozens of viral videos and posts seen by more than 300,000 people. The influencers are calling out the Charmin toilet paper brand and raising concerns about declining caribou habitat, boreal forest destruction, and Indigenous sovereignty in Canada, where the company sources some of its fiber.

«Procter & Gamble is the parent company of Charmin, and they mislead consumers with reassuring claims about planting trees. What they don’t tell you is that they’re actually cutting down massive swaths of the boreal forest, which destroys the habitat of endangered species like woodland caribou,» said TikTok’s @trison_b.

This public callout comes three months after shareholders defied the company and voted in favor of a proposal for P&G to assess how it can do better on forest sourcing and impacts — a clear indication that the world’s largest consumer goods company is not doing enough to deal with the financial threats of deforestation and forest degradation in its supply chains. Procter & Gamble has not released plans for how it will respond to the proposal.

«Companies like P&G sit and label themselves environmentally conscious and get praised for it — like they’re not literally making toilet paper out of trees taken off of Indigenous land,» said TikTok’s @_reem.k_.

Nearly a dozen youth activists and youth organizations joined environmental organization Stand.earth in posting videos using the hashtag #GreenOut22 and #WipeRightCharmin.

«Procter & Gamble is destroying the boreal forest to make your Charmin toilet paper — unsustainably and using greenwashing methods,» said TikTok’s @jaysoune, a Canadian resident. «This is her now, isn’t she gorgeous?» he asks sarcastically while standing in front of a photo of a clearcut.

San Carlos Apache Tribe Sues US Forest Service to Stop Resolution Copper Mine

SAN CARLOS, Ariz., Jan. 15, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The San Carlos Apache Tribe filed a federal lawsuit late Thursday seeking to stop the U.S. Forest Service from transferring sacred tribal land at Chich’il Bildagoteel, or Oak Flat, to two foreign multi-national mining companies planning to construct the Resolution Copper Mine.

The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court of Arizona one day before the Forest Service released its Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) earlier today. The publication of the FEIS triggers a 60-day window where 2,422 acres of Tonto National Forest, including 760 acres at Oak Flat, must be exchanged with land owned by Rio Tinto PLC and BHP Copper Inc. Oak Flat is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Traditional Cultural Property.

The land exchange mandate was included in a rider attached to the FY2015 National Defense Authorization Act. The Resolution Copper Mine could not be built without the transfer of Oak Flat from public ownership where federal laws would prohibit its destruction into private ownership where these laws would not apply.

«The Trump Administration rushed to publish a seriously-flawed FEIS just five days before President Trump leaves office,» San Carlos Apache Tribal Chairman Terry Rambler said today. «This callous, immoral and illegal action is being done to enrich wealthy foreign mining interests while knowing that mining will destroy Oak Flat that for many generations has been the heart of Apache religious and cultural practices. We were left with no choice but to file this lawsuit to prevent the transfer of Oak Flat after release of the FEIS.»

The Forest Service informed the Tribe that legally required appraisals of the federal and private land to be exchanged were not completed nor subject to public review prior to the publication of the FEIS.

«The Forest Service is grossly derelict in its duty to assure the American people that the appraisals are legitimate and reflect the actual value of the lands rather than just another one-sided government give-away of public land to benefit wealthy foreign mining conglomerates at the expense of the American people,» Chairman Rambler said. «The land exchange must not go forward prior to publication of the appraisals and an opportunity for public review and comment

The lawsuit documents that the Forest Service violated the National Environmental Policy Act by failing to conduct a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement. The suit states that the Forest Service ignored significant and technically substantial new information consisting of at least a dozen new studies and reports totaling thousands of pages that are relevant to the environmental impact of Resolution’s proposed massive mine tailings dump that threatens regional groundwater supplies.

«A Supplemental DEIS must be prepared and made subject to full public review under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA),» Chairman Rambler said. «This is the only way to ensure full compliance with NEPA by the Tonto National Forest.«

The suit also states that the Forest Service violated the National Historic Preservation Act by failing to adequately consult with the Tribe about ancestral land with great historic, cultural, and religious importance to the Tribe and its members.

Rio Tinto and BHP are the world’s two largest transnational mining companies with operations based in Australia and Britain. The companies have a notorious record of destroying sacred indigenous sites around the world.

Last year, Rio Tinto blew up the 46,000-year-old sacred Aboriginal Juukan Gorge site in Western Australia, leading to the resignation of its chief executive officer. BHP ignored Australian Aboriginal groups’ concerns about the future of dozens of heritage sites when it obtained government approval last year to destroy them as part of a mine expansion project.

«The United States must not provide rubber-stamp approvals for these companies to destroy sacred sites on our homeland in Arizona,» Chairman Rambler said.

Latinx Voters Confident About Incoming Biden Administration; Pandemic & Economic Recovery Among Top Priorities, According to New Research

WASHINGTON, Jan. 15, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Ahead of the January 20th inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, Latinx voters are confident in the incoming administration, but want the pandemic brought under control and the economy rebuilt, according to a new poll released today from Voto Latino and Change Research.

The new research – which polled 1,029 registered Latinx voters in the key battleground states of Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin – revealed that 56% of voters want COVID-19 recovery to be the top priority during Biden’s first 100 days in office, followed by jobs and the economy (42%). These priorities emerge on the heels of devastating effects from the pandemic on the Latinx community: 68% noted having a friend, family member, or loved one who contracted COVID-19, of which 30% have died due to complications from the virus. Two in five said they have lost wages, work, or a job, and have struggled to pay for rent, mortgage, groceries, student loans, and other bills. Even still, 47% of voters say they will not get or are unsure about getting the coronavirus vaccine when it becomes available to them, stressing the work that needs to be done to address racial disparities in healthcare and ensure safety, efficacy, and transparency around the vaccine.

«As the President-elect rolls out his $1.9 trillion spending package, there is a very clear mandate from Latinx voters for the Biden administration to address the pandemic, which has disproportionately plagued communities of color,» said María Teresa Kumar, president and CEO of Voto Latino, the nation’s largest Latinx voter registration and advocacy organization. «I’ve personally met with President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris’ teams who will be tackling COVID-19 through the lens of equity, which is critically important. They will need to continuously engage Latinxs in this process to build their trust, earn their support, and ensure their concerns and needs are being addressed.»

When asked what issues were most important to them aside from pandemic and economic recovery, Latinxs cite ending corruption in government (36%), expanding affordable healthcare (28%), and addressing systemic racism (27%) as top priorities. Latinx youth aged 18-34 are particularly attuned to systemic racism (35%) and climate change (23%).

«Trump has left a bad taste in the mouths of many Latinx voters, especially among our young people, who care about racial and social justice,» said Kumar. «When thinking about the agenda for Latinx voters in 2021, government leaders must have a plan in place to address healthcare disparities, environmental issues, and our divided nation. There’s much work to be done in the year ahead and Voto Latino will continue to push for this agenda to ensure a more equal, inclusive democracy for all.»

In collaboration with Voto Latino, Change Research polled 1,029 registered Latinx voters in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin from December 11-17, 2020. The margin of error traditionally calculated is 3.06%. To see additional findings, please see the executive summary for the survey here.

Voto Latino is a grassroots political organization focused on educating and empowering a new generation of Latinx voters, as well as creating a more robust and inclusive democracy. Through innovative digital campaigns, culturally relevant programs and authentic voices, we shepherd the Latinx community towards the full realization of its political power.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Jan. 15, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Duke Energy Florida (DEF), consumer representatives and business groups have reached a sweeping agreement that will advance the clean energy vision for the state, introduce innovative programs for customers, retire coal plants faster and bring additional certainty to rates through 2024.

The agreement, filed on Jan. 14, 2021, is subject to approval by the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC).

It includes investments to modernize the electric grid and improve reliability, offers new electric vehicle charging station programs, and supports pilot programs for innovative technology such as microgrids and floating solar pilot projects.

The agreement also provides a new optional residential «Time-of-Use» rate, reduces hurricane cost recovery impacts to customers, removes residential credit card fees for bill payments and includes accelerated retirement dates for DEF’s last two coal units eight years ahead of schedule, from 2042 to 2034, in support of the company’s carbon reduction goals.

After five months of negotiation, the agreement was developed with customer representatives of several consumer groups, including the state’s Office of Public Counsel, the Florida Industrial Power Users Group, Nucor Steel Florida, Inc. and White Springs Agricultural Chemicals, Inc. d/b/a PCS Phosphate.

«This agreement provides a path to minimize bill increases while continuing to make smart investments that will offer customers greater reliability, cleaner energy alternatives and innovative technology,» said Catherine Stempien, Duke Energy Florida state president. «During these challenging times, it also provides rate certainty and clarity for Florida customers and communities regarding future adjustments.»

The agreement will take effect in January 2022 and will include base rate investments of approximately $5 billion over the next three years while minimizing the impact on customer bills.

If approved, DEF’s base rates will increase by $67.2 million in 2022, and by another $48.9 million in 2023 and another $79.2 million in 2024, for a cumulative rate increase of $195.4 million.

As a result, Duke Energy Florida’s average residential customers will see a bill increase of 3% to 4% in 2022.

Nonresidential customer bill increases will vary based on consumption patterns, but most will see increases of 1% to 6.5% in 2022.

All customer classes will see an annual bill increase of approximately 1% to 2% in 2023 and 2024.

Public process

Duke Energy Florida has requested the FPSC to hold a hearing and hopes to have a decision by second quarter 2021.

About the Clean Energy for America Inaugural Ball
Cleantech Leaders Roundtable, a nonpartisan group of clean energy leaders registered as a 501(c)(4), is processing sales and sponsorships and managing payments for the event. Event proceeds will first go to pay the costs of the event, and any net proceeds will go to support nonprofit organizations that are working hard to build a clean and equitable energy future for America. Clean Energy for Biden (CE4B), is not a registered organization to date, but rather a volunteer-led effort to elect Biden-Harris. CE4B is working to determine its future organizational structure, which will continue in the spirit of organizing the clean energy industry and advocacy voices to support clean energy, action on climate and environmental justice.

About Clean Energy for Biden
Clean Energy for Biden (CE4B) is a network of clean economy business leaders and advocates organized to elect Joe Biden as President and advance policies, technologies and investment to address the climate challenge. Our industry is one of the nation’s fastest-growing and combines both financial strength and ‘boots on the ground’ which made a significant electoral impact in 2020. CE4B believes that organizing, fundraising and advocacy to advance America’s clean energy economy, combat climate change and fight for environmental justice has never been more important.
