PORTLAND, Ore., March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA)—the largest alliance of wildlife centers in Africa—released its 2020 census of African primates today. The report sheds new light on the state of the continent’s primates by combining census data collected by PASA member sanctuaries with information on the threats to wild primates and projections of human population growth in Africa. Taken together, the data provide a striking view of the complex challenges facing Africa’s great apes and monkeys.

«The data are clear that African apes and monkeys are under siege,» said Gregg Tully, Executive Director of PASA. «We run the very real prospect of losing some species in our lifetime, so we at PASA are using this report to start a broader dialog – one that considers the full context around primate conservation.»

The report is the role of human population growth in the fight to save great apes and monkeys from extinction. Human population in Africa is projected to grow from the current 1.3 billion to 2.5 billion in 2050. One fifth of the population is currently considered «very food insecure» and an additional 144 million people are classified as «moderately food insecure.» Forests and other wild habitat are already disappearing due to mining, forestry, and agricultural activity, and population growth will accelerate that loss, creating conflict with wildlife and escalating the risk of disease outbreaks.

«PASA members already face these realities,» continued Tully. «Wildlife crime, disease, habitat loss, and grinding poverty are the backdrop of their work. So they have built the relationships and resiliency needed to make lasting change.»

The report notes that PASA member sanctuaries employed nearly 700 African nationals and contributed over $6M to local economies – this in a year when the COVID-19 pandemic decimated their revenues.

While so far no primates in Africa are known to have contracted the disease, all sanctuaries in the Alliance implemented strict biosecurity protocols and many had staff sheltering on site for months, rather than risk bringing in the disease.
Despite the challenges, the need for sanctuary care has not diminished. PASA members rescued 239 primates – a 22% increase over 2019 – from poaching, the pet trade, and exploitative entertainment environments.

«Sanctuaries are crucial for long-term primate survival,» Tully said. «They can be a safe haven, a source of lifelong care, or a stop on a journey that leads back to the wild. But given what we see in this report, I worry that our efforts may not be sufficient. This urgency fuels our work – and these data are one tool to change the trajectory for these amazing animals.»

PIA Top Priority, Repeal of Federal Insurance Office, Introduced in Senate

WASHINGTON, March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) is pleased by the reintroduction of S. 524, the «Federal Insurance Office Abolishment Act». Previously introduced in the 116th Congress, the bill was reintroduced by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

«In 2010, advocates of federal insurance regulation succeeded in getting the Federal Insurance Office (FIO) established as part of the 2010 Dodd-Frank law–but PIA has never given up on repealing it,» said PIA National President Wayne White.

«Many of the FIO’s duties are examples of federal overreach in the context of our system of state insurance regulation,» White said. «In addition, the FIO has consistently sought new ways to expand its mandate beyond the intent of Congress, which put specific limits on its authority.»

In 2016, PIA was the first national insurance association to call for the repeal of the FIO. Throughout the last decade, the FIO has called for federal regulation of mortgage insurance; for its inclusion in supervisory colleges with state regulators; and for uniform national standards for state guaranty associations. In addition, it seeks to administer the National Association of Registered Agents and Brokers (NARAB). Each of these actions is an overreach.

«As long as the office continues to exist, it will remain a very real threat to the successful state-based system of insurance regulation. To do nothing and allow this office to accrue more power over time is tantamount to endorsing an increased federal role in the regulation of insurance. PIA draws a line in the sand on this issue and will not back down from this effort,» said White.

PIA will continue to build a base of support among lawmakers for repeal of the FIO.

Founded in 1931, PIA is a national trade association that represents member insurance agents and their employees who sell and service all kinds of insurance but specialize in coverage of automobiles, homes and businesses. PIA’s web address is www.pianet.com.

Texas Freeze Shows Need for Caution on ‘Energy Reset,’ States Physicians for Civil Defense

TUCSON, Ariz., March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — When unusual Arctic weather hit Texas in early February, millions were without power, and the system came close to collapse, states Physicians for Civil Defense. Some resorted to burning furniture to keep from freezing.

While other sources of generation also experienced difficulty, owing partly to lack of preparedness for such cold weather, wind turbines were producing very little. Most Texans who had power were getting it from natural gas.

Dozens of new lobbyists are descending on Washington, D.C., to promote policies that benefit wind and solar energy production. The experience of Texas, which boasts of being a leader in wind power, shows the need for caution. «Over-reliance on weather-dependent sources may mean the cleanest of ‘clean energy’—no energy—when most needed in freezing weather,» states Physicians for Civil Defense president Jane Orient, M.D.

Wind or solar generation needs 100 percent backup. Baseload is reliably provided by coal and nuclear, she said. Coal plants can have a several months’ supply of fuel on site, and nuclear only needs refueling every 12 to 18 months. Texas relies mostly on natural gas, which requires just-in-time fueling. If politicians block pipelines, delivery depends on tanker trucks—which depend on open roads.

«Having reliable, affordable electricity is not just a matter of convenience, but of life and death,» Dr. Orient said. «Appealing words like ‘renewable’ must not be allowed to substitute for robust, dependable, steady supply, regardless of the weather.»

BERKELEY, Calif., March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Deep Isolation, a leading innovator in nuclear waste storage and disposal solutions, will discuss horizontal borehole disposal as an option for spent fuel from advanced reactors at the upcoming Waste Management Symposia.

Rod Baltzer, Chief Operating Officer at Deep Isolation, will present a session titled «Disposal of Radioactive Wastes from Advanced Reactors in Horizontal Boreholes» as part of the High-Level Radioactive Waste, Spent Nuclear Fuel/Used Nuclear Fuel track, 7 a.m. to 10:10 a.m. PST on March 11. Baltzer is responsible for Deep Isolation’s waste management operations, domestically and internationally, including interactions with communities, utilities and government entities. He has more than 20 years of experience in leadership positions in the nuclear waste industry.

Baltzer’s presentation will include insights derived from the recently published Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) study, «Feasibility of Borehole Co-Location with Advanced Reactors for Onsite Management of Spent Nuclear Fuel.» The report indicates that locating a deep borehole repository at the site of a hypothetical advanced reactor in the southeastern United States could be a potentially safe and cost-effective waste management technology option.

«The EPRI study is important as it evaluates new pathways for future nuclear waste disposal,» said Deep Isolation CEO Elizabeth Muller.

«We’ve seen a heightened interest in advanced reactors this past year, and I’m excited to discuss the back-end of the advanced nuclear lifecycle,» Baltzer said. «I’ll discuss why we think that a borehole repository can provide a safe and cost-effective disposal option for advanced reactors.» Baltzer will hold office hours on March 8 from noon-2 p.m. PST, for those wishing to ask questions before his session, and on Thursday, March 11, from 7-10 a.m. PST, during the session.

Also on the agenda for Deep Isolation will be a session on stakeholder engagement.

Jim Hamilton, Director of Partnerships, will participate in the panel session, «Stakeholder Involvement in Consolidated ISF Storage, Disposal, and Transportation Initiatives,» 7-8:30 a.m. PST, on March 11. Hamilton has more than 25 years of experience in the public, private, and NGO sectors and has advised the U.S. Department of Energy on its spent fuel management program.

The panelists will discuss elements needed for success in engaging various stakeholders at all levels of a project’s lifecycle and will share best practices and lessons learned from current and previous projects.

«We have been talking with and listening to stakeholders across the waste management spectrum from the company’s inception, and it remains a key element of our success strategy,» Hamilton said. «While we do not have a disposal location yet, the work we are doing now will put us in a good position to continue to earn stakeholder support for our future implementation.»

Hola Doctor logo

New report provides priority list for flood risks and green infrastructure investments in the Great Lakes region

ANN ARBOR, Mich., March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The most populous cities in the Great Lakes, and several former manufacturing hubs, face serious challenges from climate, unemployment, and lower quality of life –– but can enhance their livability for people and nature if they route more funding and investment into green infrastructure, according to a new study. Led by San Francisco based sustainable investing expert HIP Investor, Inc. (HIP) and supported by national consulting firm Environmental Consulting & Technology, Inc. (ECT), this report is one of the products of a coalition named the Resilient Infrastructure Sustainable Communities (RISC).

The newly released report, «Climate Risks and Opportunities in the Great Lakes Region,» (https://www.risc.solutions/toolkits-and-reports/), developed by leaders in sustainability, engineering, and climate action, focuses on the importance of intervention opportunities. These include the risk of flooding and other climate risks; workforce development opportunities such as the re-hiring of existing and skilled workers; closing the gaps in health and wealth, especially in communities of color; and innovative funding sources to pay for these improvements and projects.

The research was focused on the eight U.S. Great Lakes states, comprising 653 counties, and in particular the 216 counties within the Great Lakes Basin. The analyses integrated over 100,000 data points of 15 factors to create an innovative composite scoring system. This study evaluated items such as flood risk, impervious surfaces, unemployment rates, skilled worker density, health and well-being, vulnerability index, and financing capacity – into one overall score of readiness for implementing green stormwater infrastructure. The final readiness score was found to have a strong correlation with diversity of the population, i.e., people of color.

«Communities across the Great Lakes basin are threatened by the changing climate, and threats are not affecting communities equally,» says Steve Cole, vice president of programs at the Great Lakes Protection Fund, which supported this work. «This report illustrates where vulnerable populations are, and where conditions are favorable to increase community resilience by investing in green stormwater infrastructure. These investments could bring much-needed attention and new jobs to underserved communities while mitigating the environmental risks they face.»

RISC is led by ECT, and includes collaborators from across the country, including HIP, New York based climate-action nonprofit CDP, Chicago-based community-expert Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) and think/action-tank The Delta Institute, and Ann Arbor area based American Society of Adaptation Professionals.

«Accelerating talk and action on important investments will help strengthen our communities, people and nature,» says Sanjiv Sinha, Ph.D., RISC’s Project Leader and a senior vice president at ECT, «Members of the RISC team are currently engaged in the greater Milwaukee and Buffalo regions on large-scale investments in green stormwater infrastructure, and other priority regions can benefit from their models.»

«Funding and financing climate action, especially in the Great Lakes, is lagging the visionary goals that many cities, counties, and states have set, such as 100% greenhouse gas reductions by 2030,» says R. Paul Herman, CEO of sustainable-investing expert HIP Investor Inc. and a coauthor of the report. «Investing in green infrastructure today can create green jobs, stronger communities, and more resilience, which also fulfill the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.»

 Leading candidates for critical green stormwater infrastructure investment include:

  • Cleveland metro area and Cuyahoga County, Ohio;
  • Milwaukee metro area and Milwaukee County, Wisconsin;
  • Chicago metro area and Cook County, Illinois; and
  • Detroit metro area and Wayne County, Michigan.

Smaller cities and mid-sized counties are prime candidates as well:

  • Lucas County, Ohio;
  • Lake County, Indiana;
  • Ingham County, Michigan;
  • Erie County, Pennsylvania;
  • Isabella County, Michigan; and
  • St. Joseph County, Indiana.

(The report provides ranked data on all 653 counties in the US Great Lakes region.)

«The focus on equity and equality in cities and communities is essential, as the analysis in the report shows,» says Ron Harris, Chief Resilience Officer of the City of Minneapolis, and member of the leadership cluster for RISC. «Cities are increasingly tasked with solving major, competing issues. Cities that do not become fully equitable will always be in a recovery mode.»

The full report provides lists, maps and graphics to tell the story of the communities most in need of action to survive the climate and engage their workforces.

Earth Week will also see Multiple Days Of Climate Action

On Earth Day, April 22, global activists, international leaders, and influencers will come together for the second-annual multi-hour Earth Day Live

WASHINGTON, March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — EARTHDAY.ORG along with lead organizers Education International, Hip Hop Caucus, and Earth Uprising are organizing three separate parallel climate action summits on April 20 and 21 ahead of the Biden Administration’s global leaders’ climate summit. The parallel summits are focused respectively on climate literacy, environmental justice, and a broad range of youth-led climate-focused issues. Earth Week will also bring thousands of groups and millions of voices together to stand up for climate action and bring awareness to humanity’s greatest existential threat. On Earth Day, EARTHDAY.ORG will bring together its partners, activists, educators, researchers, musicians, artists, influencers and more for its second-annual Earth Day Live.

«This Earth Day, we have an important opportunity to challenge world leaders to see climate change for what it is – a pressing global security threat, one that threatens everyone and everything but particularly our most vulnerable people and places,» Kathleen Rogers, President of EARTHDAY.ORG, said.

April 20
The three days of climate action begin on April 20 with the global youth climate summit led by Earth Uprising, in collaboration with My Future My Voice, OneMillionOfUs and hundreds of youth climate activists. The global youth summit will consist of panels, speeches, discussions, and special messages with today’s youth climate activists including Greta Thunberg, Alexandria Villaseñor, and Licypriya Kangujam. The four-hour digital summit will address the progress that has been made on their main issues of concern, including the creation of green jobs, climate literacy, civic skill training, environmental justice, biodiversity protection and sustainable agriculture. In the lead up to the event, the youth organizers will put together a short list of demands that they want addressed at the Biden Administration’s climate summit.

«President Biden bringing together world leaders to discuss climate change on Earth Day is a major turning point in global climate action! This youth-led summit will bring together global youth climate activists to prepare a message for President Biden on the eve of his historic summit. Youth around the world are experiencing some of the worst effects of climate change right now. We’re suffering from extreme weather, pollution, civil unrest, and the loss of lives and livelihoods. Our summit will identify the key issues and solutions most important to youth. The future of our generation is at stake and it’s important for our voices to be heard!» Alexandria Villaseñor, Founder of Earth Uprising said.

«World leaders need to see climate change as an urgent political issue. The world is already experiencing adverse extreme weather events like floods, droughts, heat waves, cyclones, locusts and extremely polluted air at the same time. These are all the impacts of climate change. The United States must take a leadership role in the shift to sustainable production and consumption to end this crisis and shift from the carbon economy to the green economy. It must put in place policy that would draw investment into resource efficiency and reduction of waste. In doing so, it will provide a template for other developing countries as well,» Licypriya Kangujam, 9-year-old Climate & Environmental Activist said.

On the evening of April 20, the Hip Hop Caucus and its partners will present the «We Shall Breathe» virtual summit. This digital event will examine climate and environmental justice, connecting the climate crisis to issues of pollution, poverty, police brutality, and the pandemic, all within a racial justice framework.

«Climate and environmental justice were on the ballot in November. The same Black and Brown voters that decided the election for President Biden, are the same communities that have been most impacted by environmental injustice and who are most threatened by climate disaster. This Earth Day, we expect President Biden to reinforce our affirmation that ‘We Shall Breathe’ by announcing bold climate action based on equity and justice domestically and globally,» Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., President and Founder, Hip Hop Caucus said.

April 21
On April 21, Education International will lead the «Teach for the Planet: Global Education Summit.» The multilingual virtual summit will span several time zones and feature prominent activists from every continent, focused on the crucial role that educators play in combating climate change and why we need transformative climate education now.

Susan Hopgood, President of Education International, said, «The fight against climate change must have an education face and a teacher’s voice in every area of the world. The planet is in crisis and I strongly believe that teachers and educators have a critical role to play in combating the environmental destruction, human suffering and social injustice that will certainly occur if climate change continues at current rates.»

«Teachers know that the most important long-term investment our societies can make towards a sustainable future is ensuring every student is literate about climate science and equipped with the civic knowledge and skills to change course,» David Edwards, General Secretary, Education International said. «All world leaders must commit to creating the necessary educational space and resources so that students learn the world’s most important lesson. In launching this campaign, the world’s educators are determined to realize our students’ right to know, do and exist.»

April 22
Parallel to the Biden Administration’s global climate summit, EARTHDAY.ORG will produce its second Earth Day Live digital event on April 22. The multi-hour multi-channel livestream will include segments taking place around the world starting at noon Eastern Time. Workshops, panel discussions, and special performances will focus on Earth Day’s 2021 theme, Restore Our Earth, which examines natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems. Topics will include climate and environmental literacy, climate restoration technologies, reforestation efforts, regenerative agriculture, equity and environmental justice, citizen science, cleanups, and beyond. World climate leaders, grassroots activists, nonprofit innovators, thought leaders, industry leaders, artists, musicians, influencers, and more will be involved.

HEALDSBURG, Calif., March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — White Pine Renewables is pleased to announce the completion of the Healdsburg Floating Solar Project. The project will deliver clean energy to the City of Healdsburg, Calif., under a 25-year power purchase agreement. At 4.78 MW(dc) and sited on ponds at the City’s wastewater treatment plant, the project is the largest floating solar project completed in the United States to date.

The electricity generated by the project will cover approximately 8% of the City’s total energy demand and is an important part of the City’s plan to reach 60% renewable energy before 2030. Additionally, siting the solar panels on the ponds avoids using land for the project and will reduce evaporation and algae growth, benefitting the surrounding vineyards that rely on the treated water for irrigation.

The Healdsburg Floating Solar Project was developed and is operated by White Pine Renewables. «This project exemplifies what differentiates White Pine,» said White Pine CEO Evan Riley. «We combined innovative technology and an efficient capital structure to provide long-term savings to the City of Healdsburg

Noria Energy co-developed the project with White Pine and Collins Electrical Company, Inc., a California-based construction contractor, provided installation services.  The Healdsburg project was completed in less than six months from procurement to commissioning.

Terry Crowley, Utility Director for the City of Healdsburg, described the project as «a cornerstone of the City’s long-term plan to save money on energy costs and provide City electric customers with 60% renewable energy.»  Crowley added that he «greatly appreciated the collaborative partnership between White Pine, Noria, and Collins Electrical to deliver the project safely, efficiently and in an extremely short period of time.»

Noria’s CEO Jon Wank noted that the Noria-White Pine partnership «leveraged Noria’s experience in floating solar technology and White Pine’s development experience to create a project that delivers low-cost renewable energy while creating environmental benefits.»

While still a small portion of the overall solar market, floating PV is becoming increasingly popular because of its dual land use purpose and generally higher energy production due to the cooling effects of water and wind.

COLUMBIA, Md., March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations has been more difficult than anticipated. In turn, the lifting of pandemic protocols and economic recovery have been delayed. The February National Association of Credit Management’s Credit Managers’ Index (CMI) reflects these setbacks, but most readings remain solid.

«The February CMI lost some of the edge noted in January’s data—similar to patterns found in many other economic indicators released thus far this year,» said NACM Economist Chris Kuehl, Ph.D. «Overall, the latest CMI numbers are not bad and many of the index’s sub-readings are historically high.»

Kuehl said the «burst of enthusiasm» over the COVID-19 vaccine distribution was likely behind January’s high scores—enthusiasm that later dissipated with vaccine distribution complications nationwide.

«We saw declines with the service sector because people are realizing these shutdown protocols are going to last a little longer than we thought,» Kuehl said. «I believe we’re settling into a bit of a pattern, and it wouldn’t surprise me if we see real growth in April or May.»

Although muted optimism may account for February’s dip, data still show manufacturing, construction and transportation sectors are recovering and were not hit as hard by the 2020 pandemic-induced recession. Service sectors remain the hardest hit, and its small rebound at the end of last year and the start of 2021 has faded.

The CMI combined index slipped from 59.7 to 57.5, but the reading remains in line with three of the past five months. Similarly, the combined index of favorable factors (65.3), down 4.4 points since January, closely aligns with December’s reading (65.7). Likewise, the combined index of unfavorable factors (52.2) nearly mirrors December (52.5) with only a 0.8-point slip from last month.

«Subsectors show a fairly universal pattern,» Kuehl noted. Although most of the combined favorable subsectors fell slightly, all of them remain comfortably in expansion territory. Even with a 6-point decline month on month, the sales category (69.9) remains robust and a far cry from the 20 recorded in April 2020, Kuehl said. Dollar collections (59.2) took the biggest hit with a 6.8 decline, dropping out of the 60s, where it had been since July 2020.

This downward move creates some concern after nearly seven months of steady growth, Kuehl said. «It would appear that some companies have reached the end of their rope and are showing a little distress. He added companies were likely becoming «cashflow protective» similar to February and March of last year.

Combined unfavorable subsectors also remain in expansion territory. Rejections of credit applications changed very little, going from 51.6 to 51.5. This is good news given that new applications are down a little, and it suggests that most of those companies seeking terms are acceptable credit risks, Kuehl said. There was a little dip in the accounts placed for collection category as it went from 52.9 in January to 51.6 this month. Although these numbers are in the expansion zone, they are trending in the wrong direction, Kuehl added. The reason being that businesses were in trouble last year and are still in jeopardy for the coming year. The disputes numbers showed a promising shift as they went from 50.9 to 51. And dollar beyond terms experienced a fairly dramatic decline, going from 58.9 to 52.

«There are more companies facing stress and falling behind in their obligations, especially those in the service and retail sectors,» Kuehl explained. «Overall, unfavorable subcategories have not declined to the same extent as some of the favorable subcategories.»

Overall, Kuehl contributes the February CMI’s dip to the index’s favorable categories, which reflect immediate business prospects for companies seeking trade credit. «Even in the worst of conditions, unfavorable categories could take two to three months to manifest,» he said.

«Even with the drop this month, it only went back to the numbers we saw in November and December,» Kuehl said. «It’s not like it was an utter collapse. Credit managers are making decisions whether to give people 60-, 90- or 100-day terms; that’s still a pretty positive assessment. People are thinking things will be more normal in May or June. That’s the prevailing wisdom.»
