NORTH AURORA, Ill., March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The Fig Factor Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping young Latinas develop their goals and dreams, announced its new board members for the 2021-2022 year.

Maria Herrera Paloma will take over as president from Jacqueline S. Ruiz who helmed the creation of the foundation in 2014. Other new board members are Vice President Elizabeth Villarreal; Secretary Blanca Sepulveda, Treasurer Leonor Gil and Executive Director Luz-Marie Caro. Fig Factor Foundation graduate Claudia Martinez, Luz A. Naranjo, Priscilla Guasso and Dr. Judith Banda are also joining the board. Ruiz will continue to be on the board.

Ruiz, who is concentrating on the foundation’s marketing and public relations planning, personally asked Paloma to become president.

«I’m really blessed and truly honored by this opportunity,» Paloma said. «Jackie took me by surprise when she asked me. We had been in discussions with what we should do with the foundation and how to plan for 2021. She spoke to everyone individually, took a consensus and everyone agreed that changes needed to be made. That was when she asked me if I would like to be president.»

Among the things on Herrera’s agenda are to offer more workshops throughout the year and eventually expanding the popular annual Young Latina Day to be a daylong conference filled with motivational speakers and resources to help them learn about careers, find ways to climb the professional ladder and talk with bosses about opportunities for growth.

«I see this conference as a way for these young Latinas to set goals and give them a roadmap for how to accomplish them,» she said.

Caro has been with the foundation for several years and is excited about her new role. She talks about how girls enter the foundation’s program feeling scared, timid and afraid. After experiencing a four step program and receiving positive encouragement from mentors, they emerge with new self-confidence and empowerment.

«My heart smiles every time I have the honor of sharing the beauty of growth, self-love and shift that I see in the young ladies going through our program,» Caro said. «The Fig Factor Foundation unleashes the amazing in our future leaders.»

Paloma is looking forward to working with a great team of women who are very passionate about promoting the cause of inspiring young Latinas to take proactive roles—roles that cause beneficial domino effects.

«We just have such an opportunity to make a true impact in people’s lives because when you impact a young Latina, you impact her whole family and the communities she is involved in her life,» she said.

Survey: Majority of Business Leaders Don’t Support $15 Minimum Wage; Job Seekers Narrowly Approve

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla., March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Seventy-four percent of business leaders do not support a federal minimum wage increase to $15 per hour, while job seekers narrowly support the measure at 57%.

This is according to a recent poll conducted on Express Employment Professionals’ blogs for business leaders and job seekers.

When asked further how a $15 federal minimum wage would impact their employee count, 51% of business leaders said they would have to reduce their workforce numbers, and 42% said there would be no impact. Seven percent said they could actually increase headcount with the change.

Job seeker survey respondents provided examples of how the minimum wage increase would impact their household, including:

  • «It would cause inflation in prices for other goods to compensate for the higher wage.»
  • «It would help in the short term, but with the long-term rising costs of everything and small businesses more likely to close permanently, it’s not worth it. Also, most jobs pay close to or more than $15 to start.»
  • «It would help me pay my rent, utilities, and other living expenses.»
  • «My family wouldn’t be struggling as much as we are now.»
  • «Long-term, I see it as a negative as inflationary pressure would quickly increase the cost-of-living to the point that the minimum wage workers would be returned to their prior economic status.»
  • «It’s not enough in certain parts of California. Cost of living keeps going up, but wages don’t.»

In Florida where Express franchise owner Mike Brady operates, state legislation dictates a gradual minimum wage increase over the next three years until it reaches $15 an hour.

«I think employee count at clients we serve will stay the same and others will decrease a little,» the Jacksonville franchisee said. «It’ll be a mixed bag that will impact all companies in some form or fashion.»

Similar legislation was also passed in Connecticut, eventually reaching a state minimum wage of $15.

«There’s no question in my mind there will be fewer people working—it’s already happened going from $9.60 to $12 where it currently is at,» said Dwight Hahn, Windsor, Connecticut, Express franchise owner. «There is only so much margin in our manufacturing machine and the workforce will undoubtedly be reduced to keep costs affordable.»

In addition to the immediate impacts, both Brady and Hahn see long-term consequences that would impact the workforce.

«A big impact is having less people working,» Hahn said. «Businesses will have no choice but to make up the cost somewhere, and much of it will be in the area of manpower. Additionally, there will be fewer low-paying jobs for the person who wants entry-level work, part-time work or a second job.»

Brady predicts consumer goods, fast food and other services will cost more and the low- or no-skill workers will be negatively impacted.

«We’ll see the skills gap widen as a result of fewer opportunities to learn through entry-level positions, and the market will become even more competitive,» he said.

While Brady thinks a $15 minimum wage makes sense in locations with higher costs-of-living, Hahn disagrees.

«The principle is the same regardless of the location in the country,» he said. «There is a finite amount of payroll money to go around and businesses need to make tough decisions to keep their operations running within budget and at levels where their services are affordable to consumers.»

With the potential to impact so many parts of the economy, Express CEO Bill Stoller said any action on the proposed $15 minimum wage should be weighed carefully.

«Despite making strides to repair the economy, businesses are still struggling to recover from the COVID-19 shutdowns,» he said «Now might not be the best time to put their existence in further jeopardy by passing blanket legislation for very different parts of the country. Everyone deserves a fair wage, and we see this happening all over the country as demand picks up again.»

Survey Methodology
The survey of 1,290 business leaders, decision makers and job seekers was conducted in February 2021 through the Express Refresh Leadership and Job Journey blogs.

Vital Decisions Endorses Commitment by HHS Secretary Nominee Becerra and Sen. Whitehouse to Improve End of Life Care

EDISON, N.J., March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — During last week’s Senate Finance Committee confirmation hearing, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary nominee Xavier Becerra and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island agreed to work together on a pilot project to improve the end-of-life care experience for individuals and their families.

Having supported more than 300,000 individuals and their families through advanced illness decision-making, Vital Decisions offers its knowledge, evidence base and recommendations in support of expediting wide scale improvements in end-of-life care.

Research shows that individuals who receive advance care planning services are more likely to have conversations about their end-of-life care wishes, a turning point that increases the likelihood of receiving care that is consistent with their preferences and associated with better quality of life and greater satisfaction. Research also shows that having these conversations earlier in the illness trajectory has the most meaningful impact on the care experience, when the individual and the family can make optimal, unpressured decisions.

From its vantage point as an essential partner to Medicare, Medicaid and Commercial plans nationwide, Vital Decisions offers policy considerations for advance care planning best-practices delivered on a national scale:

  • Increase broad access to advance care planning services delivered by specialized behavioral health clinicians through a telehealth model.
  • Proactively engage individuals with serious illness, along with their caregivers, in Goals of Care conversations as a covered healthcare benefit.
  • Utilize evidence-based methods of intervention that demonstrate impact with diverse and underserved populations to improve access to care.
  • Leverage a coordinated, technological infrastructure to streamline the integration of advance care plans across the healthcare ecosystem.

When these best-practices are employed, Vital Decisions observes clinical evidence proving that activating and empowering individuals, their family and caregivers is transformational:

  • Increasing satisfaction with care planning: Survey data from over 30,000 program participants shows an overwhelming 88% of respondents highly value the advance care planning process.
  • Reducing unwanted, unwarranted care: More than 35 economic impact studies of the advance care planning provided through Vital Decisions’ Living Well program show that care aligned with an individuals’ preferences is consistently 20% lower in cost compared to care that does not incorporate personal preferences.

«Individuals and their families need significantly more help with the emotional side of care. We applaud Becerra and Sen. Whitehouse for making this a priority — it’s a personal issue for us too. We must make far greater and faster progress on behalf of all Americans,» said Leah Puccio, Vital Decisions’ CEO. «Our organization was founded to change healthcare decision making for the better, at scale. We offer our platform as a research conduit to fast-track our government and policymaking partners’ efforts.»

Could Rising Temperatures Send More People with MS to the Hospital?

MINNEAPOLIS, March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — As average temperatures around the globe climb, a preliminary study has found people with multiple sclerosis (MS) may expect worsening symptoms, enough to send them to the hospital more often. The preliminary study released March 2, 2021 will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s 73rd Annual Meeting being held virtually April 17 to April 22, 2021.

«We know that heat sensitivity is common in multiple sclerosis, and climate scientists expect that periods of anomalously warm weather will become more frequent with climate change,» said study author Holly Elser, Ph.D., of Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, Calif., and a member of the American Academy of Neurology. «Our study suggests that warming trends could have serious health implications over the long term for people living with MS.»

Anomalously warm weather was defined as any month in which local average temperatures were higher than the long-term average temperature for that month by at least 1.5 degrees Celsius, or almost 2 degrees Fahrenheit.

For the study, researchers looked at insurance claims for 106,225 people with MS living across the United States. Researchers calculated the estimated effect of anomalously warm weather on MS-related emergency department, inpatient and outpatient visits. Researchers then compared the number of medical visits for each person during periods of anomalously warm weather to periods of normal weather.

Researchers found that during periods of anomalously warm weather, participants had a 4% increased chance of having an emergency department visit compared to periods of normal weather. Participants had a 3% increased chance of having an inpatient visit and a 1% increased chance of having an outpatient visit during anomalously warm periods compared to periods of normal weather.

Researchers estimate that over the course of follow-up, periods of anomalously warm weather were associated with an estimated excess of at least 592 emergency department visits, 1,260 inpatient visits and 1,960 outpatient visits related to MS.

«While the relative increase in risk of visits is small, the associated absolute effect on people with MS and the health care system is meaningful,» Elser said.

Limitations of the study include that the study was retrospective and that researchers had no direct way to measure peoples’ symptoms.

The study was supported by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

CHICAGO, March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Amsted Industries, a diversified designer and manufacturer of cutting-edge industrial solutions serving the railroad, vehicular and construction markets with a global footprint spanning 65 facilities in 10 countries across 6 continents, is bringing together two of its century-old, core Tier 1 automotive supply business units, Means Industries and Burgess Norton, to form a new and innovative technology team: the Amsted Automotive Group (AAG). The integration provides an expanded global presence with 16 facilities in North America, Asia and Europe to adequately serve the global customer base with a robust manufacturing footprint producing over 100 million components and assemblies annually. This group combines design and engineering expertise, strategically aligned to be a nimble leader in advanced metal-forming and powder metal manufacturing with electro-mechanical clutch design capabilities for electrified propulsion solutions – building on our integral role in global advanced automatic transmissions designed in North America, Europe, and Asia.

«The world automotive market is going through a period of fundamental change,» said Stephen Smith, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Amsted Industries. «The transition to electric vehicles has the potential to reshape much of the industry, including the supply base. We are bringing Means Industries and Burgess-Norton together to form the AAG to focus on being significant participants in electric vehicle technology, design and manufacturing supply, while capitalizing on the remaining opportunities for supply to traditional internal combustion engine programs.»

This combination of expertise in torque transfer and powder-metal forming will facilitate more elegant and stronger designs which reduce parasitic losses in the powertrain. This has the potential to extend electric vehicle driving range or reduce electric motor and battery requirements.

«The electric vehicle market is no longer emerging; it is here, and production volumes will increase rapidly,» said Jeremy Holt, President of AAG. «The formation of AAG aligns our design and engineering expertise, making the company a leader in torque transfer for electric vehicles without diminishing resources for internal-combustion engine programs.»

The advantages of forming the AAG became apparent during the development of a disconnect device which is used in a new production electric vehicle that will launch in 2021. This device uses unique clutching technology developed by Means and Burgess-Norton proprietary powder-metal forming. With the AAG, the teams will be further integrated for more rapid and smooth brainstorming, development and refinement of concepts, prototyping and manufacturing.

AAG provides the foundation for the company to further expand in the automotive market and beyond. The new group will bring together team members in multiple operations located in Mexico, Italy, China, Japan, Canada and the United States.

AmplifiedAg Introduces Indoor Farm Platform and Disruptive Technologies, Positioning Company for Rapid Expansion

CHARLESTON, S.C., March 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — With a mission to provide global access to safe food, AmplifiedAg, Inc. introduces its indoor farming platform which includes vertical farms, hydroponic systems, and its proprietary operating system with disruptive seed-to-sale SaaS-based technologies. For the past five years, AmplifiedAg has demonstrated its unparalleled ability to sustainably grow produce to scale at the highest yield, quality and nutritional value, while operating directly at the point of consumption.

AmplifiedAg deploys indoor farms 70% faster than other CEA implementations, and directly at the point of consumption.

«AmplifiedAg is on a trajectory to change how the world is feeding itself. Through the adoption of our core technologies and scalable farm platform, we’re providing secure food sources and influencing a global shift to indoor farming, which will play a key role in providing food to a growing planet,» said Don Taylor, CEO of AmplifiedAg, Inc.

AmplifiedAg rapidly deploys fully functioning farms 70% faster than other CEA implementations, and at cost that is 50% of the required capital per production pound. The company upcycles shipping containers into controlled agriculture environments with vertical hydroponic systems, LED lights and electronics, and integrated with AmplifiedAg’s proprietary operating system.

AmplifiedAg’s indoor farm platform produces 86 times more crop yield per acre compared to traditional farmlands and provides reliable crop production with 365-day farming, regardless of climate and resources. The compact design maximizes the growing space, and provides easy mobility and scalability in food deserts and space-limited areas.

But the heartbeat of the operation is AmplifiedAg’s proprietary Operating System that features industry exclusive traceability which tracks every detail of an individual plant’s journey from its growth to distribution. This gives farmers total transparency and control of horticulture, food safety, and business management.

Farm containers’ resilient architecture and segmentation minimizes the risk of crop loss due to pest and pathogen infestations. SaaS-based technologies provide real-time tracking analytics and 24/7 access for farmers to mitigate risk, control the farm environment and optimize plant growth.

AmplifiedAg’s ability to quickly place farms directly in communities and distribution points drastically reduces emissions. Sustainably-focused, the farms don’t use soil or pesticides and utilize up to 95% less water than traditional farming.

Wholly-owned by AmplifiedAg, Vertical Roots is the company’s proofpoint and has set industry-breaking records in less than five years. Vertical Roots is the largest hydroponic container farm in the U.S., growing nutritious leafy greens with products in over 1,200 grocery stores across the Southeast.

With a proven concept for leafy greens, AmplifiedAg’s horticulture expansion plan includes varied nutrient and protein-rich foods to feed the world’s growing population.

Increasing threats to the planet’s food production fueled Taylor, a 30-year software industry veteran, to found AmplifiedAg in 2016.

«With a growing population, less arable land, water supply and food contamination issues, climate change and environmental disasters,» said Taylor, «Our planet is on a path to grow less food for more people while continuing to accelerate the degradation of the earth’s fragile ecosystem. Exasperating our already critical food access issues on the planet. The only way we’re going to get ourselves out of this situation is with technology. We need to grow safer food in greater volumes closer to the point of consumption, while conserving and restoring the environment.»

«That is what is driving all of our development and innovation, and ultimately the demand we are seeing from indoor farmers and communities across the world,» concluded Taylor.

AmplifiedAg, Inc. was founded in 2016 as the parent company of Vertical Roots, Boxcar Central, a SaaS platform supporting third-party logistics companies and breweries, and Tiger Corner Farms, a CEA farm manufacturing company. AmplifiedAg has absorbed Tiger Corner Farms and Boxcar Central operations as the company presents its mobile indoor farm platform to the market.
