LONDRES, 18 de diciembre de 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — El ganador del Mobility Unlimited Challenge de tres años de duración ha sido anunciado, y Phoenix Instinct, del Reino Unido, recibirá $1 millón para seguir desarrollando su silla de ruedas inteligente de fibra de carbono ultraligera, llevarla al mercado y, finalmente, transformar millones de vidas en la comunidad de personas con discapacidad en busca de un bien mayor.

La Toyota Mobility Foundation, creada por Toyota en 2014, lanzó el desafío global de $4 millones en 2017 en alianza con Nesta Challenges, en una apuesta por impulsar la innovación en el campo de las tecnologías de asistencia para personas con parálisis de los miembros inferiores, siendo esta una muestra de la misión de Toyota de Movilidad para Todos y su visión más amplia de llevar felicidad a todos.   

El desafío convocó a ingenieros talentosos, innovadores y diseñadores de todo el mundo a presentar sus diseños para dispositivos innovadores, integrados con las últimas tecnologías, para mejorar la movilidad y la independencia de los usuarios finales. Participaron más de ochenta equipos de 28 países de todo el mundo.

Los Laboratorios de Investigación de Ingeniería Humana (HERL) de la Universidad de Pittsburgh dirigieron la evaluación de las presentaciones y proporcionaron orientación junto con un equipo de expertos en la materia de Toyota, y el ganador fue elegido por un panel de jueces expertos (consulte las Notas para los editores a continuación para obtener detalles al respecto).

Diseñada por Phoenix Instinct, la Phoenix i utiliza sistemas inteligentes para ajustar automáticamente su centro de gravedad, lo que hace que el marco de fibra de carbono ultraligero sea extremadamente estable y fácil de maniobrar. Brinda apoyo a la función erguirse y sentarse con un mecanismo de asistencia pasiva para personas con parálisis de los miembros inferiores.
• Quix: IHMC & MYOLYN (Estados Unidos): un exoesqueleto motorizado de gran movilidad que ofrece una movilidad vertical rápida, estable y ágil.
• Wheem-i: Italdesign (Italia): un dispositivo eléctrico semiautomático con ruedas que ofrece viajes compartidos para usuarios de sillas de ruedas. Ha sido principalmente diseñado para micromovilidad y se puede utilizar en una variedad de superficies.

En todo el mundo, millones de personas viven con parálisis de las extremidades inferiores (las causas más comunes son accidentes cerebrovasculares, lesiones de la médula espinal y esclerosis múltiple).
