SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 18, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Sofar Ocean, the world’s largest real-time ocean data platform, announced today it has reached a major milestone in its global deployment now covering half the world’s oceans, and is on track to cover the entire planet by the second half of 2021. Sofar’s satellite connected platform provides live marine data that drives more accurate ocean weather forecasts, dynamic ship routing for commercial, private, and government vessels, and improved research capabilities that benefit climate scientists and other researchers. The Sofar platform is already deployed by government, commercial shipping, and climate science customers:

Government: Sofar is providing live ocean data and intelligence services to the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the advancement of the Ocean of Things (OoT) program. The engagement is now live, providing detailed ocean data and analysis that enables more accurate ocean weather forecasts, dynamic ship routing, and improved research capabilities that will benefit scientists, maritime defense, and other users of DARPA programs.

Commercial Shipping: Sofar has also completed several commercial sea trials with its new Wayfinder dynamic ship routing service and is now partnered with major commercial shipping companies including Berge Bulk demonstrating improved accuracy in weather forecasting protecting ships from severe weather conditions, as well as improving use of bunker fuel, strategic carbon emissions planning, reducing voyage time, and other customer logistics goals.

Climate Science: The third critical application for Sofar’s platform is Aqualink, bringing ocean climate research sites online for the first time. Aqualink is a non-profit founded by Peter and Lyndon Rive, co-founders of Solar City, who are continuing their mission to help preserve our planet and climate by providing access to the Sofar platform and equipment to connect their research projects. By using the Sofar Spotter + Smart Mooring and cloud-based infrastructure, sensor and model data are immediately available through APIs, so that the research teams can focus on visualizing temperature and other data from coral reef sites around the world.

«Sofar is incredibly proud to reach the midpoint milestone of our global roll-out,» stated Dr. Tim Janssen, CEO, Sofar Ocean. «Our real-time data platform is available to all stakeholder organizations to improve marine weather forecasts, track extreme weather events, improve efficiencies, delivery times, and carbon strategies with dynamic ship routing, and empower ocean researchers and climate scientists with the benefits of cloud computing and IoT that have catalyzed other areas of science and technology for years. Large-scale distributed sensor networks revolutionized digitization on land and in space. Now we bring it to the world’s oceans.»

«Route optimization is an important part of Berge Bulk’s road to carbon neutrality by 2025,» said James Marshall, CEO, Berge Bulk. «We have seen fantastic fuel savings through improved weather routing and working with new weather data technology is helping us fine tune this even further.»

The Sofar Ocean real-time ocean intelligence platform is powered by over a thousand coastal and open ocean drifter buoys covering the world’s oceans. Sofar APIs also provide access to Sofar’s global marine weather model which assimilates the Sofar Spotter buoy network with data from NOAA and other government agencies. It provides real-time wave, wind, temperature, currents, in addition to forecast and hindcast data, as well as other types of intelligence.

MORRISTOWN, N.J., Dec. 18, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Covanta (NYSE: CVA), a world leader in sustainable waste and energy solutions, released a performance update on its Sustainability Report for 2020. This update, which includes data from the full year 2019, provides an in-depth analysis of the company’s continued progress on its ambitious Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) improvement goals.

«As a society, we are facing some of the greatest environmental challenges in our history, including global climate change and record demand on our natural resources. More sustainable waste and materials management are key parts to solving both of these challenges,» said Derek Veenhof, Covanta’s chief operating officer. «We continue to work toward solving the complexities that waste poses for the communities and businesses we serve.»

Highlights of company achievements include:

  • Diverted 21.6 million tons of waste from landfills – enough to fill a six-lane highway with garbage trucks, bumper to bumper, from Los Angeles to New York City
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 18.8 million metric tons relative to landfilling – equivalent to pulling nearly 4 million cars off the road
  • Recycled over 1 million tons of metal, industrial wastewater and other resources – enough to produce 3 billion soda cans and fill 136 Olympic sized swimming pools
  • Continued to execute strategic growth plans in the UK – four new waste-to-energy projects under construction, which will help enable national self-sufficiency in managing waste and compliance with landfill diversion targets, in addition to creating a low-carbon and resource-efficient economy

Covanta’s successful performance is driven by its talented and diverse workforce. Since its very first sustainability report nearly ten years ago, the company has been focused on building a respectful and equitable workplace environment that leverages employees’ unique talents, perspectives and experiences regardless of age, race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender. What started with transparency and reporting expanded to one of the first corporate targeted Diversity & Inclusion goals in 2015. Today, progress in this area includes:

  • Expanding Employee Resource Groups to include Women of Covanta: RISE, Early Career Connections, Black Professionals, Sustainability and LatinX. These employee-led groups aim to foster a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace aligned with the organization
  • Enhancing our role in external advocacy and research for diversity, equity and inclusion through the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion™ Racial Equity Fellowship. We’ve committed one of our senior leaders to a one-year fellowship to advance the company’s and other like-minded organizations’ efforts to identify, develop and promote scalable and sustainable policies and corporate best practices to address systemic racism and social injustice, and to improve societal wellbeing

The ultimate goal of the company is to reflect the diversity of the communities where it operates and serves. These communities are not only where Covanta does business. In fact, 48 percent of its employees live within 10 miles of the facility where they’re employed.

In 2020, the company’s continued commitment to these communities was evidenced by its active support of New Jersey’s Environmental Justice legislation. An early leader in this effort, Covanta has had a Community Outreach and Environmental Justice Policy since 2011. In the company’s environmental performance goal, emissions reductions in environmental justice communities have been specifically prioritized, with projects currently in development to reduce NOx emissions at three facilities.

«Despite the extraordinary year we have all experienced, Covanta’s commitment to sustainability has not wavered,» said Paul Gilman, Ph.D., Covanta’s chief sustainability officer. «As demonstrated from the year’s achievements, our team has pulled ahead to advance the company’s mission even under the most challenging of circumstances. There is still much more to be done, but our successes in 2020 underscore our team’s dedication to protecting tomorrow, whether that is through addressing climate change or being a good neighbor. These efforts are integral in our progress to make meaningful contributions to a more sustainable society.»

The complete report, prepared in accordance with the latest Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) guidelines, is available at http://covanta-csr.com.

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Commits $5.8 Million to Advance Black and Latino Leadership in Education

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 18, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) today announced $5.8 million in grants to three organizations working to accelerate diverse education leader pipelines by identifying, developing and supporting diverse education leaders. REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 18, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) today announced $5.8 million in grants to three organizations working to accelerate diverse education leader pipelines by identifying, developing and supporting diverse education leaders. The grant recipients are: Education Leaders of Color, Latinos for Education and Surge Institute. These organizations aim to interrupt, and address the cultural, institutional, and structural barriers in education faced by historically underserved students and families.

«We envision a country where demographics, such as race and socioeconomic status, are not predictive of student outcomes and every student has equitable access to learning experiences that meet their unique academic and developmental needs,» said Sandra Liu Huang, head of education at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. «We are proud to continue to partner with Education Leaders of Color, Latinos for Education and Surge Institute as part of that commitment. The work that these organizations are doing is critical to advancing equity in education.»

Through its community partnerships, CZI is helping create a future where diverse leaders in all aspects of education have the opportunities and skills to create solutions that address gaps in the education system.

Education Leaders of Color (EdLoc), a nonprofit membership organization, will receive $2 million to help attain their goal of increasing the number of effective, Black and Latino leaders in senior positions in education and adjacent fields. The grant will be used to recruit and develop leaders who will support a range of evidenced-based and equity-informed policy and practice work.

«EdLoC is thrilled that the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative has reaffirmed its commitment to EdLoC’s mission, even as we mourn the passing of our beloved CEO, Layla Avila,» said EdLoC interim CEO, Sharhonda Bossier. «Thanks to CZI’s support, our national network of leaders of color has grown tremendously. Today, we represent over 400 leaders of color across 40 states advancing a holistic third way in education that improves outcomes for Black and Brown children. CZI’s continued support helps ensure we can sustain our impact for children as we also work on shaping our future under new leadership.»

Latinos for Education (L4E), is a non-profit focused on cultivating and sustaining the pipeline of Latino leaders across the education sector–from the classroom to the boardroom. L4E will receive $1.9 million to accelerate leadership programming, mobilize leaders and communities, and grow their virtual community platform, EdCentro.

«Currently, 43% of Latino teachers leave the profession within 4 years due to inadequate support, lack of cultural competency from school leadership, and obstacles to advancing to leadership positions. Addressing this leadership gap is critical to improving educational outcomes, and we’re thankful to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative for investing in the essential work to transform the education system and create pipelines for more Latino talent to enter the education sector,» said Amanda Fernández, CEO and co-founder of L4E. «This renewed investment by CZI provides us with the resources we need to continue our efforts to create leadership pathways for Latinos in education, and improve education equity for all.»

Surge Institute (Surge), a Chicago-based nonprofit, will receive $1.9 million  to address the shortage of leadership of color in educational institutions that predominantly serve children of color. Through its fellowship program, Surge connects, trains, and elevates transformative education leaders of color, partnering with school districts, nonprofits, universities, and other youth-serving organizations to build toward collective impact.

«Since 2015, we have trained just under 200 fellows in Chicago, Oakland, and Kansas City, whose leadership is impacting over 3.4 million students across the country,» said Carmita Semaan, Surge founder and president. «In 2020 we found ourselves evolving and elevating the way that we support these leaders. The support and partnership of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative have been invaluable to our efforts to bring brighter tomorrows for the millions of kids and families we serve. Positive change is happening in the education space and we are glad to have an ally in the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, who shares in our mission.»

Since the onset of the pandemic, CZI has committed more than $30 million to support teachers and students impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes grants to the HEARTS program at the University of California, San Francisco, Village of Wisdom, Kingmakers of Oakland,  Beloved Community, the National Parents Union, and additional support for teacher professional development and the expansion of broadband solutions.

CZI’s education work is focused on ensuring that every student can get an education that’s tailored to their individual needs and supports every aspect of their development. CZI envisions a country where demographics are not predictive of student outcomes and every child enters adulthood with the knowledge, skills, habits and agency they need to realize their full potential. BUFORD, Ga., Dec. 18, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — 2020 has been a year full of surprises. After strong sales months in the early portion of the year, the arrival of COVID-19 seemed to bring new home sales to a screeching halt, at least temporarily.

However, the combination of low interest rates and low inventory helped spark a roaring comeback for new home sales and many homebuilders were able to capitalize on that, including local homebuilder EMC Homes.

Weathering the storm of COVID-19 would have seemed like a successful enough year for a local, privately-owned business. But, in just their 4th year in operation, they are celebrating their 250th home closing.

«This is an extraordinary milestone for our company,» said Donovan Haag, Chief Financial Officer and Managing Member of EMC Homes. «We have an incredible team here at EMC Homes and I couldn’t be more proud. Our mission is to help get people into an affordable home and the fact that we’ve done that now for 250 families is remarkable.»

As if that were not enough to celebrate, EMC Homes is also poised for another year of double-digit growth. After closing 85 homes in 2019, they are on-target to close 125 in 2020 – an impressive 47% increase from the previous year.

«The largest financial investment people make during their lifetime is their home,» said Jaclyn Riddle, VP of Sales for EMC Homes. «We’re so happy that year after year, more and more people are entrusting us with something that important.»

Brendan Riley, President of GreenPower commented, «We are seeing a dramatic increase in autonomous vehicle demand and this vehicle demonstrates the compelling marriage of advanced technologies with the customer’s own unique requirements.  An autonomous vehicle like our EV Star really opens the door for other automated applications, such as delivery services, and we really see a wide-open market. With a fully autonomous EV Star, GreenPower can lead the way in this exciting, disruptive space.»

Ryne Shetterly, VP of Sales and Marketing at GreenPower added, «The collaboration between Perrone Robotics and GreenPower Motor Company has proved successful and we are excited to deliver the first unit to JTA.»  Shetterly continued, «As a result, we are in the process of building a second unit in partnership with both First Transit and Perrone Robotics for a nationwide sales demo tour scheduled to begin in March 2021.  First Transit is one of the leading transit solutions providers to transit properties all across country and this tour will allow GreenPower to leverage their reach and influence within the space.»

Black Voters Matter, joined by voter victim and rights attorneys, to confront Sec. of State with demand to return purged voters to rolls–or face new lawsuit next week

When:

Today, Friday, 11:30 a.m.

Where:

Steps of State Capitol, Atlanta

Who:

  • LaTosha Brown, co-founder Black Voters Matter
  • College Park voter, illegally removed from rolls by Sec. of State
  • Georgia’s leading voting rights attorneys CK Hoffler, Gerald Griggs, Robert Patillo, Maria Banjo, and Law Prof. Barbara Arnwine (co-plaintiff)

Why:

In his Wednesday order, Federal Justice Steve Jones said the State, Black Voters Matter, and other plaintiffs in the voting rights lawsuit over the purge of tens of thousands of voters, should meet to work out «discrepancies» in the State’s voter purge list, errors which will stop citizens from voting in the run-off.

At 11 a.m., LaTosha Brown and attorneys will present the corrected list to the Sec. of State (press invited) and ask the voters, including a College Park voter joining her, be returned to the rolls immediately —otherwise they will be wrongly denied their vote in the run-off.

The attorneys will back the demand by serving Sec. of State Brad Raffensperger with a formal notice of a new federal lawsuit should he fail to comply or stall on the Court’s opinion that the parties meet to correct the purge lists.

The plaintiffs, including Black Voters Matter Fund, Rainbow/PUSH, Southwest Voter Registration Education Project, and Transformative Justice Coalition will hit Raffensperger with a new federal suit unless Raffensperger complies.

The list of wrongly purged voters will be supplied by experts with the Palast Investigative Fund, updated from the report by journalist Greg Palast released in September by the ACLU of Georgia.

Plaintiffs and attorneys will answer questions on the Capitol steps at 11:30 a.m.
