About Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia, a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, affects about 1 in every 12 pregnancies in the United States. It is a leading cause of premature birth and maternal and infant death, taking the lives of 70,000 women and 500,000 babies worldwide each year. In the U.S., black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to have a poor outcome than white women.  It occurs sometime after the twentieth week of pregnancy and can occur up to six weeks postpartum. Many of the signs and symptoms, like swelling, headache and rapid weight gain, can be mistaken for normal discomforts of pregnancy.

About the Preeclampsia Foundation

The Preeclampsia Foundation is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 2000 to improve the outcomes of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy by educating, supporting, and engaging the community, improving healthcare practices, and finding a cure. We envision a world where preeclampsia and related hypertensive disorders of pregnancy no longer threaten the lives of mothers and babies. For more information, visit www.preeclampsia.org.

The growing number of cellular or mobile subscribers, the evolution of CSPs to DSPs, and increasing complexities in revenue sharing across the telecom ecosystem are the major factors propelling the market growth. However, the presence of stringent telecom regulations and lack of technical proficiency in implementing billing and revenue assurance solutions are hampering the market growth.

The telecom billing and revenue management solutions and services are used by various communication services providers across the world to grow their revenue by enhancing telecom networks. Such solutions and services empower the telecom service providers in fraud management and fraud detection resulting in decreased operational costs. Additionally, these telecom billing and revenue management solutions and services help telecom service providers in introducing new services in the market together with improving customer experience with real-time account recharging services. Moreover, with the rise in networks, services, and solutions, telecom operators sustain high operational costs. Therefore, growing operating costs are producing demand for advanced telecom billing and revenue management solutions.

Based on the deployment, the on-premises segment is going to have a lucrative growth during the forecast period owing to the maintenance and support, high-end IT and networking infrastructure. On-premises telecom billing and revenue management solutions are also known as customer premises solutions. This is the most demanded, traditional, and popular deployment type among operators. The majority of telecom operators stick to on-premises systems, as the infrastructure is already present and can be reused, thereby saving a substantial amount on infrastructural change.

New IHME COVID-19 Forecasts See Nearly 300,000 Deaths by December 1, However, Consistent Mask-Wearing Could Save about 70,000 Lives

SEATTLE, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — America’s COVID-19 death toll is expected to reach nearly 300,000 by December 1, however, consistent mask-wearing beginning today could save about 70,000 lives, according to new data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine.

The US forecast totals 295,011 deaths by December. As of today when, thus far, 158,000 have died, IHME is projecting approximately more 137,000 deaths. However, starting today if 95% of the people in the US were to wear masks when leaving their homes, that total number would decrease to 228,271 deaths, a drop of 49%. And more than 66,000 lives would be saved.

Masks and other protective measures against transmission of the virus are essential to staying COVID-free, but people’s inconsistent use of those measures is a serious problem, said IHME Director Dr. Christopher Murray.

«We’re seeing a rollercoaster in the United States,» Murray said. «It appears that people are wearing masks and socially distancing more frequently as infections increase, then after a while as infections drop, people let their guard down and stop taking these measures to protect themselves and others – which, of course, leads to more infections. And the potentially deadly cycle starts over again.»

Murray noted that there appear to be fewer transmissions of the virus in Arizona, California, Florida, and Texas, but deaths are rising and will continue to rise for the next week or two. The drop in infections appears to be driven by the combination of local mandates for mask use, bar and restaurant closures, and more responsible behavior by the public.

«The public’s behavior had a direct correlation to the transmission of the virus and, in turn, the numbers of deaths,» Murray said. «Such efforts to act more cautiously and responsibly will be an important aspect of COVID-19 forecasting and the up-and-down patterns in individual states throughout the coming months and into next year.»

Murray said that based on cases, hospitalizations, and deaths, several states are seeing increases in the transmission of COVID-19, including Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon and Virginia.

«These states may experience increasing cases for several weeks and then may see a response toward more responsible behavior,» Murray said.

In addition, since July 15, several states have added mask mandates. IHME’s statistical analysis suggests that mandates with no penalties increase mask wearing by 8 percentage points. But mandates with penalties increase mask wearing by 15 percentage points.

«These efforts, along with media coverage and public information efforts by state and local health agencies and others, have led to an increase in the US rate of mask wearing by about 5 percentage points since mid-July,» Murray said.

Mask-wearing increases have been larger in states with larger epidemics, he said.

IHME’s model assumes that states will reimpose a series of mandates, including non-essential business closures and stay-at-home orders, when the daily death rate reaches 8 per million. This threshold is based on data regarding when states and/or communities imposed mandates in March and April, and implies that many states will have to reimpose mandates.

As a result, the model suggests which states will need to reimpose mandates and when:

  • August – Arizona, Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina
  • September – Georgia and Texas
  • October – Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington.
  • November – Alabama, Arkansas, California, Iowa, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wisconsin.

However, if mask use is increased to 95%, the re-imposition of stricter mandates could be delayed 6 to 8 weeks on average.

The model also assumes that that 50% of school districts in each state will opt for online instruction only for the 2020–2021 school year.

«As data emerge on actual school patterns, we will incorporate them into our future revisions of forecasts,» Murray said. «We recognize that, given mask wearing, the likely restrictions on after-school activities, and the potential for some parents to avoid engaging in school-related functions, our estimated impact of school openings may be overly pessimistic.»

The new death projections and other information, such as hospital resources usage, are available at https://covid19.healthdata.org.

IHME wishes to warmly acknowledge the support of these and others who have made our COVID-19 estimation efforts possible.

Airbus was founded in 2000 and is based in Leiden, the Netherlands.  The Company is a multinational aerospace corporation, operating through its Commercial Aircraft, Defense and Space, and Helicopters divisions.  The Company’s American Depository Receipts («ADRs») trade in the U.S. on the over-the-counter market (the «OTC») under the ticker symbol «EADSY,» and the Company’s foreign ordinary shares («foreign ordinaries») trade in the U.S. on the OTC under the ticker symbol «EADSF.»

In August 2012, the United Kingdom («U.K.») Serious Fraud Office («SFO») announced that it had opened a formal criminal investigation into one of Airbus’s subsidiaries, GPT Special Project Management Ltd. («GPT»), which Airbus acquired in 2007.  The allegations called into question a service contract entered into by GPT prior to its acquisition by Airbus, relating to activities conducted by GPT in Saudi Arabia.

Unbeknownst to investors and the public, however, Airbus was at an increased and foreseeable risk of facing significant potential liabilities for other alleged illegal activities that would later be investigated by governmental authorities around the world.  These activities, combined with the investigation into GPT, implicated all three of Airbus’s divisions, calling into question the sustainability of the Company’s reported earnings during the Class Period.

The complaint alleges that throughout the Class Period, Defendants made materially false and misleading statements regarding the Company’s business, operational, and compliance policies.  Specifically, Defendants made false and/or misleading statements and/or failed to disclose: (i) that Airbus’s policies and protocols were insufficient to ensure the Company’s compliance with relevant anti-corruption laws and regulations; (ii) that, consequently, Airbus engaged in bribery, corruption, and fraud in order to enhance its business with respect to its commercial aircraft, helicopter, and defense deals; (iii) that, as a result, Airbus’s earnings were derived in part from unlawful conduct and therefore unsustainable; (iv) the full scope and severity of Airbus’s misconduct; (v) that resolution of government investigations of Airbus would foreseeably cost Airbus billions of dollars in settlements and legal fees and subject the Company to significant continuing government investigation and oversight; and (vi) that, as a result, the Company’s public statements were materially false and misleading at all relevant times.

On August 8, 2016, Reuters reported that the U.K. had opened a corruption probe into Airbus.  Specifically, the SFO announced that it had «opened a criminal investigation into allegations of fraud, bribery, and corruption in the civil aviation business of Airbus,» which «relate to irregularities concerning third party consultants.»  The investigation followed Airbus’s flagging of «misstatements and omissions» involving outside contractors in certain export financing applications to U.K. regulators and the European Export Credit Agencies earlier in the year, which the Company had found through an internal probe.

On this news, Airbus ADRs fell $0.21 per share, or 1.49%, to close at $13.86 per share on August 8, 2016, and Airbus foreign ordinaries fell $0.82 per share, or 1.45%, to close at $55.58 per share on August 8, 2016.

France and the U.S. later opened their investigations into the subject of the SFO’s allegations in 2017 and 2018, respectively.  On January 31, 2020, media outlets reported that Airbus had agreed to a deal with U.S., U.K., and French prosecutors to settle bribery and export-control violations against the Company for €3.6 billion ($4 billion).  Pursuant to the settlement, Airbus also agreed to appoint an external compliance officer for at least two years to monitor the Company’s handling of its defense-related sales and disclosures.

On this news, Airbus ADRs fell $0.72 per share, or 1.93%, to close at $36.68 per share on January 31, 2020, and Airbus foreign ordinaries fell $2.21 per share, or 1.48%, to close at $147.00 per share on January 31, 2020.

Then, on March 15, 2020, the Wall Street Journal reported that Airbus executives had previously raised red flags about fees paid to a number of middlemen working with its helicopter division, led at the time by the Company’s current Chief Executive Officer («CEO»), Defendant Guillaume M.J.D. Faury («Faury»),  that may have violated global bribery and corruption rules, according to internal documents related to Airbus’s $4 billion bribery settlement, which were not previously made public and/or reported.

On this news, Airbus ADRs fell $3.44 per share, or 15.71%, to close at $18.46 per share on March 16, 2020, and Airbus foreign ordinaries fell $7.97 per share, or 9.3%, to close at $77.75 per share on March 16, 2020.

Finally, on July 30, 2020, the Wall Street Journal reported that the SFO had charged GPT and three individuals with corruption in connection with a defense contract the U.K. had arranged with Saudi Arabia.  These charges were the culmination of the investigations initiated by the SFO back in August 2012.

On this news, Airbus ADRs fell $0.67 per share, or 3.56%, to close at $18.13 per share on July 31, 2020, and Airbus foreign ordinaries fell $2.85 per share, or 3.8%, to close at $72.10 per share on July 31, 2020.

Dietary cholesterol and phytosterols contribute directly to heart disease

REYKJAVIK, Iceland, Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Scientists at deCODE genetics, a subsidiary of Amgen, and their collaborators from the Icelandic healthcare system, University of Icelandthe Copenhagen University Biobank and the Danish Blood Donor Study, recently published a study in European Heart Journal, with new findings that point to harmful effects of dietary cholesterol and phytosterols.

It is well established that the «bad» cholesterol (also called non-HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol) directly affects the development of cardiovascular disease. Individuals who have high blood levels of bad cholesterol, or are at high risk of heart disease for other reasons, are generally advised to lower their cholesterol levels through lifestyle changes, and sometimes receive treatment with cholesterol-lowering drugs such as statins.

Blood levels of cholesterol are affected by both genetics and the environment, diet in particular, with the consumption of saturated fats, found primarily in red meat and high-fat dairy foods, increasing blood cholesterol. However, the importance of dietary cholesterol in the regulation of cholesterol levels in the blood and the risk of heart disease has been the subject of controversy for decades. Most foods that are rich in cholesterol are also high in saturated fats with some exceptions, including eggs and shellfish.

Phytosterols are cholesterol-like molecules found in small amount in all plant foods, including fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes. Food enriched with high amounts of phytosterols, mainly margarine and dairy products, is commonly recommended as part of heart-healthy diet as it may decrease the absorption of dietary cholesterol.

The transporter proteins NPC1L1 and ABCG5/8 control the absorption of dietary cholesterol and phytosterols. NPC1L1 transports sterols from the intestinal lumen into enterocytes where ABCG5/8 excretes less than half of the cholesterol but most of the phytosterols back into the intestinal lumen. Thus, we generally absorb about 50-60% of the intestinal dietary cholesterol but only 5% of dietary phytosterols.

The authors studied the effects of sequence variants that modulate the function of the ABCG5/8 transporter on blood levels of cholesterol and phytosterols and the risk of coronary artery disease in large sample sets from Iceland, Denmark and the UK Biobank. The effects of the sequence variants were measured in up to 147 thousand patients with coronary artery disease and 922 thousand individuals without disease.

The study showed that individuals who harbor sequence variants that decrease the function of ABCG5/8 transporter have increased blood levels of both cholesterol and phytosterols and increased risk of heart disease. These results confirm that dietary cholesterol affects blood levels of cholesterol and risk of heart attacks. The results also demonstrate that people absorb variable amounts of the cholesterol they consume.

The study also showed that the effect of the ABCG5/8 variants, influencing both levels of cholesterol and phytosterol, on risk of heart disease, was greater than of other cholesterol variants that do not affect phytosterol levels. These results support the notion that phytosterols may contribute directly to atherogenesis, raising questions about the safety of supplementing food with phytosterols.

In the accompanying Editorial, Oliver Weingärtner states that «The study by Helgadottir et al. is not only the best study so far to support the hypothesis that variations at the ABCG5/ABCG8 locus is mechanistically involved in atherosclerotic heart disease, but it also lends a strong impetus to study the role of xenosterols in this process too.»

TACOMA, Wash., Aug. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — CHI Franciscan leads the way in Washington for Newsweek’s Best Maternity Care Hospitals of 2020. The health system’s St. Anne Hospital in Burien, St. Michael Medical Center in Bremerton, and St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way accounted for almost half of the Washington-based hospitals in the list of 231 honorees throughout the country.

In partnership with Leapfrog Group, a panel of national experts rated U.S. health care facilities on standards of excellence in maternity care, including achieving low rates of C-section, episiotomy and early elective deliveries, and following crucial protocols to protect mothers and babies. These high standards were evaluated at the Family Birth Center of each hospital, which offer obstetrical care and midwifery services, high-risk pregnancy care and a Level II special care nursery, among other expert childbirth services.

«This recognition is a testament to our care team’s dedication to providing exceptional maternity and childbirth services,» said Ketul J. Patel, CEO of CHI Franciscan. «Providing high-quality, safe care is our number one priority and we pride ourselves on ensuring our comprehensive services meet the needs of families in our communities.»

CHI Franciscan has long maintained the largest and most comprehensive women’s program throughout the state, earning regional and national recognition for quality and safety outcomes across the system. CHI Franciscan and Virginia Mason have also worked together to increase maternal and women’s health services through an outpatient obstetric and women’s health clinic which opened in January, and as well as a birth center which will open in August.

The complete list of Leapfrog Group’s Best Maternity Hospital recipients of 2020 appeared in the July 24 edition of Newsweek available online and in newsstands.
