Bonnie Plants Donates $50,000 to AmpleHarvest.org to Support Nonprofit’s Mission Encouraging Edible Gardeners to Stock Food Pantries with Produce

UNION SPRINGS, Ala., Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — As part of the ongoing Grow More. Feed More. initiative, Bonnie Plants announced a $50,000 donation to AmpleHarvest.org, a nonprofit organization that makes it easy for home gardeners to connect with local food pantries to donate surplus homegrown produce.

«We are grateful for the sustained and growing impact this generous donation will have for years to come,» said AmpleHarvest.org founder Gary Oppenheimer. «By helping to expand AmpleHarvest.org’s increasing network of food pantries, the donation from Bonnie Plants is estimated to result in more than 4 million servings of fresh produce donated over the span of five years*.»

As the COVID-19 pandemic created overwhelming demands for food pantries nationwide, Bonnie Plants partnered with AmpleHarvest.org to launch the Grow More. Feed More. initiative  to inspire home gardeners to plant their own victory garden with a goal of donating a total of 10 million pounds of homegrown harvest to help those in need. While food pantries consistently lack access to fresh produce, the average home gardener grows 240 pounds of surplus vegetables per year, which adds up to enough surplus food to feed at least 28 million hungry people.

«In the spring, we called on home gardeners to grow more vegetables than ever before as a way to help feed their community,» said Bonnie Plants President and CEO Mike Sutterer. «It contributed to a movement among Americans to plant their own victory gardens. Now that these gardeners are harvesting the vegetables they have grown, we want to make sure none of it goes to waste. Filling just a small grocery bag is all it takes to provide around 25 pounds of fresh produce to feed those who need it.»

Bonnie Plants continues to donate to local food pantries all of the produce grown in their test gardens in Union Springs, Alabama and Marysville, Ohio, already eclipsing their goal of donating 5,000 pounds of fresh vegetables directly from these gardens. People without a garden can also help support the mission of AmpleHarvest.org by making a monetary donation, which will help expand their network of more than 8,700 food pantries in 4,200 communities across all 50 states.

AmpleHarvest.org easily connects gardeners to the closest participating food pantry with instructions on how, where, and when to donate homegrown produce. COVID-19 safety protocols are in place at all partner food pantries to ensure that food is transferred safely, making the process of getting fresh food into the hands of those in need as easy as possible.

Up to 22 million people visit SignUpGenius each month to organize events and volunteers. «With many schools continuing virtual learning during the pandemic, technology is more critical than ever to connect teachers and students,» SignUpGenius Marketing Director Kate White said. «We’re grateful to the educators adapting to support students across the country, and are excited to empower a school with our annual giveaway.»

Giving back is at the heart of the SignUpGenius culture. The company donates to various nonprofits in the Charlotte area, as well as organizations important to employees. The team has volunteered in schools serving low-income students, cleaned and prepped used books for a literacy program, and served meals to families of pediatric patients at a local hospital. SCHAUMBURG, Ill., August 4, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Telemedicine Solutions LLC today released TeleWoundSTAT©, an embedded telemedicine module, within its market-leading WoundRounds app to help nurses at the bedside launch wound consults, with off-site wound experts, at the touch of a button. Given the challenges facing healthcare providers to manage chronic wounds and prevent wound complications, telemedicine can fulfill a critical role to ensure nurses and other caregivers correctly document wounds and also deliver appropriate evidence-based treatments.

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the care delivery models for many healthcare providers, especially inpatient operations such as skilled nursing facilities and hospitals. Care for patients with chronic wounds, a highly-specialized practice, is made even more challenging by staffing shortages of credentialed wound care specialists as well as by the unique complications COVID-19 can pose not only to wound healing but also to preventing complications such as infection and pressure-related injuries.

According to the latest information from the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP), the pathophysiology of COVID-19 can directly cause chronic wounds such as pressure injuries to worsen, the emergence of skin alterations which mimic the appearance of deep tissue pressure injuries, and can also cause increased susceptibility of patients to pressure injuries. Indirect effects of COVID-19 can include exacerbating proper wound management and prevention, including good nutrition, hydration, and a regular schedule of turning or «microshifting» patients to relieve pressure, and effective moisture control to prevent skin breakdown.

«Healthcare providers are more stretched than ever now with the challenges of COVID-19, and we want to ensure nurses at the bedside who need a little extra help documenting or treating a patient’s wound can quickly and easily connect with off-site wound experts,» said Mike Diamond, CEO of Telemedicine Solutions LLC.

TeleWoundSTAT can also serve as a powerful tool for clinicians who round to multiple facilities and have had COVID-19-related restrictions or limitations on access to facilities, to sustain their practice via safe and efficient «virtual rounds» to patients and residents in a wide range of healthcare facilities.

«Our customers are making heroic efforts to deliver the best care to their patients through this evolving crisis. We believe TeleWoundSTAT can help close a critical gap for many operators, and also provide an effective backstop of oversight for wound management programs,» added Mike Diamond.

Telemedicine Solutions LLC is a mobile health technology company with a mission to improve the quality of life for people living with chronic diseases via simple apps designed to reduce the costs of care delivery and optimize patient care. WoundRounds, a service of Telemedicine Solutions, LLC, is the wound management and prevention solution that empowers clinicians to deliver better wound care in less time. WoundRounds drives consistency in nursing practice, completeness in wound documentation, and compliance with organizational policies and standards.

Proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Rule Jeopardizes Patient Care, Argues the Surgical Care Coalition

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for calendar year 2021 (CY2021) jeopardizes patient care, specifically surgical care. While the proposed rule takes steps to increase access to care through telehealth, it also has the potential to drastically reduce patients’ access to surgical care, just as many patients have delayed care due to COVD-19.

In the fee schedule announced by CMS, surgeons will see their Medicare payments cut by 9% for cardiac surgery, 8% for thoracic surgery, 7% for vascular surgery, 7% for general surgery, 7% for neurosurgery and 6% for ophthalmology for CY2021.

«We support steps to expand access to care, but this rule takes one step forward and several steps back by disregarding patients’ needs and the surgeons who care for them. The middle of a pandemic is no time for cuts to any form of health care, yet this proposed rule moves ahead as if nothing has changed. The health care system cannot absorb cuts of this magnitude,» said David B. Hoyt, MD, FACS, American College of Surgeons Executive Director. «The Surgical Care Coalition believes no physician should see payment cuts that will reduce patients’ access to care. This proposed rule would move forward with significant payment cuts that will only make the situation worse and harm patients.»

The proposed rule affirms, and for some surgical specialties increases, the cuts CMS announced last year, which are set to take effect January 1, 2021. These cuts will reduce payments to nearly all surgical specialties, including by as much as 9 percent for some surgeons. The policy was ill-informed and dangerous to patients even before the pandemic started but could be even more detrimental as our health care system continues to weaken under COVID-19.

To stop these cuts and preserve care for patients, Congress must act now. The Surgical Care Coalition is urging Congress to enact legislation to waive Medicare’s budget neutrality requirements for these E/M adjustments and to require CMS to apply the increased E/M adjustment to all 10- and 90-day global code values.

In a survey earlier this year, one-in-three private surgical practices stated that they are already at risk of closing permanently due to the financial strain of the COVID-19 crisis. In the same survey, it was found that nearly half of surgeons face more difficult financial decisions, and are responding by either cutting their own pay or paying employees in the face of declining revenues. This rule will likely force surgeons to take fewer Medicare patients leading to longer wait times and reduced access to care for older Americans.

About the Surgical Care Coalition
The Surgical Care Coalition advocates for access to quality surgical care for all Americans. The Surgical Care Coalition is comprised of 12 surgical professional associations that proudly represent more than 150,000 surgeons working across the country with a common goal of improving the quality of care, and quality of life, for all patients. The founding members have worked together for nearly three decades to promote sound policy solutions to the U.S. Congress and federal regulatory agencies to solve the biggest challenges in health care.

DALLAS, Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Family-owned Dallas based metal fabrication shop, the NoContactKey has risen in popularity since the introduction of their one of a kind clean touch key. The NoContactKey is a no contact door opener, tool and stylus made of metal antimicrobial brass. To help parents and students heading back to school in-person feel more comfortable as they navigate a challenging learning environment during this pandemic, NoContactKey has expanded their product selection to include a child size version of their clean touch germ key, perfectly suited for children’s fingers.

Currently, the NoContactKey is the number one hygiene tool supplying clients throughout the country with their no touch hand tools. The demand from consumers for additional PPE so that they may feel safe handling daily tasks has resulted in NoContactKey’s shop processing thousands of orders a day and becoming a large-scale production allowing them to pivot quickly to better serve teachers, students and schools.

«Every parent wants to be assured that the school their children will attend this fall is taking serious precautions against the spread of COVID-19,» said Don Douglas, founder of NoContactKey. «Despite schools’ major efforts towards cleanliness and social distancing, community spread of the virus is still a prevalent reality. That is why we feel every child and teacher should have their own NoContact Key as an extra precaution to reduce the number of germy shared surfaces they are exposed to throughout the day.»

https://www.nocontactkey.com/product/nocontactkey-for-kids/

Parents, teachers and students can feel safer and stay healthier by explaining to the kids how to use the NoContactKey and reinforcing the importance of trying to avoid directly touching shared surfaces.

  • With the help of a no contact germ tool like the NoContactKey, your children can enter a school without worrying about touching door knobs or pressing buttons.
  • A child can use the brass door opener keychain hook and the weight of a door is not a factor but rather the amount of resistance the door closer provides. The door closer is the device mounted at the top of the door and is responsible for controlling how much effort is required to open the door. If a door closer resistance is adjusted to the ADA standard of 5 pounds or less, then the user will be able to easily open the door using the NoContactKey.
  • Keeping a NoContactKey easily accessible allows your children to avoid using their hands to press water fountain buttons, touch school locker handles, push elevator buttons, lower toilet handles, etc.
  • The NoContactKey also serves as a high-quality stylus which can be used on many touch screen learning devices including iPad tablets.

The NoContactKey germ utility tool can be the added assurance parents need for their children to head back to school safely. When it comes to procuring PPE for the coming year, Parent Teacher Associations and school administrators can provide additional peace of mind to families and staff by providing the best no touch tool made from antimicrobial brass. by not touching shared surfaces. Made from antimicrobial brass, it is the best no touch tool available!

MIT, Monash University researchers awarded $150,000 Michelson Prizes for Human Immunotherapy and Vaccine Research

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The Michelson Medical Research Foundation and the Human Vaccines Project have announced the winners of the 2020 Michelson Prizes for Human Immunology and Vaccine Research. The awards support the research of two early-career investigators who are advancing human immunology, vaccine discovery, and immunotherapy across major global diseases.

This year’s recipients are Danika Hill, Research Fellow at Monash University, and Michael Birnbaum, Assistant Professor at MIT. They will each receive unrestricted grants of $150,000.

2020 will be remembered as the year the world endured an unprecedented public health crisis with vast implications for the entire global community. The COVID-19 pandemic highlights the critical need for unorthodox research in immunology and vaccine discovery. Daring young pathfinders need partnerships with those who believe in their potential. That is why the Michelson Medical Research Foundation and the Human Vaccines Project engage in an annual international search to identify and support the most promising projects from young investigators.

«Our current system is rigged, making it nearly impossible for a young researcher to get funding,» says Dr. Gary Michelson, founder, and co-chair of the Michelson Medical Research Foundation. «Even the head of the NIH cites the advancing age at which investigators receive their first NIH grant as ‘the greatest problem facing U.S. science.’ History shows that profound breakthroughs are made by researchers under age 35. We must invest in next-generation scientists who have demonstrated excellence in their field by combining disruptive thinking with a novel scientific approach. My wife Alya and I are proud to help Dr. Hill and Dr. Birnbaum pursue their revolutionary ideas.»

«We need courage, passion, and creativity to achieve true progress in science. It inspires me to see young researchers like Dr. Hill and Dr. Birnbaum display these strengths with their innovative proposals,» says Dr. Wayne Koff, CEO of the Human Vaccine Project. «Only by thinking beyond conventions, we will be able to transform the future of human health. I look forward to seeing how the research of our 2020 Michelson Prize winners will contribute to the Human Vaccine Project’s grand vision of decoding the human immune system.»

About the winners:

Danika Hill, Research Fellow, Department of Immunology and Pathology, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.

Danika Hill received the Michelson Prize 2020 for: «Exploiting T Follicular Helper Cells as an Innovative Tool to Discover Targets for Long-Lived Humoral Immunity.»

Dr. Hill aims to find specific antigens responsible for long-lived humoral immunity. With the help of a human Strep A challenge model, she will identify T cell receptor types in circulating T Follicular helper cells, which will be used to engineer reporter cell lines to uncover novel vaccine candidates. Dr. Hill uses an innovative approach with clear trans-disease applicability to identify antigens for vaccines or immunotherapy for various infectious diseases, cancer, and autoimmunity.

«The Michelson Prize comes at a critical point in my career,» says Dr. Hill. «It will enable me to peruse my own research directions and enable me to follow-up on some exciting discoveries that I’ve made. With the prize, I’ll be able to apply some cutting-edge techniques to study hundreds of thousands of cells in molecular detail. And it’s my hope that with this project we can better understand what to pinpoint when we design vaccines to generate these T follicular helper cells that are so essential for good vaccine responses.»

Michael Birnbaum, Assistant Professor, Department of Biological Engineering, MIT, Cambridge, Mass.

Michael Birnbaum received the Michelson Prize 2020 for: «Repertoire-Scale Determination of T Cell Recognition and Cross-Reactivity to HIV via pMHC Lentiviral Display»

Dr. Birnbaum strives to expedite and perfect the process of vaccine antigen selection. He is using HIV «elite controllers,» who can safely go long periods without treatment, to identify which antigens their immune system successfully targets. By working with a lentiviral display, he can identify specific antigens, which might be ideal targets for use in HIV vaccines. Dr. Birnbaum’s method is applied for HIV but can easily be expanded to various other diseases, including infectious diseases, cancer, and autoimmunity.

«The Michelson Prize is funding our development and deployment of a technology that would supercharge our ability to define what T cells recognize during the course of HIV infection. The support provided by this award will let us work faster than would be possible otherwise. We will be trying many of our best ideas at once to press this technology into service, in a time where better tools to study infectious disease are clearly needed,» Dr. Birnbaum explains.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Organic Consumers Association (OCA) filed suit against Mowi USA and Mowi Ducktrap for deceptive marketing and advertising of smoked Atlantic salmon products sold under the Ducktrap River of Maine brand.

The action was filed by Richman Law Group on behalf of OCA, in D.C. Superior Court under the D.C. Consumer Protection Procedures Act.

«Most consumers choosing a smoked Atlantic salmon product with the words ‘All Natural’ on the package would be surprised to learn that that salmon was raised in a crowded pen where it was treated with artificial chemicals, including pesticides and medically important antibiotics,» said OCA International Director, Ronnie Cummins.

«In survey after survey, consumers say they believe a product labeled ‘all natural’ was produced without synthetic chemicals, especially pesticides and antibiotics, and that they are willing to pay more for products labeled ‘natural’,» Cummins said. «Ducktrap River of Maine targets those consumers, even though the company’s practices are not consistent with consumer expectations.»

In fact, consumers have ranked the «minimal use of hormones and drugs,» «no pollution to the environment» and «respect of fish welfare» as three of the four most important elements of sustainable aquaculture.

In addition to false «All Natural» and «100% All Natural» packaging and marketing claims, Mowi misleads consumers by claiming its farmed salmon is «sustainably sourced,» «environmentally sustainable» and «eco-friendly,» suggesting to consumers that the products are made from salmon sourced in accordance with higher environmental and animal welfare standards.

Conditions at Mowi facilities in Scotland have been rated by animal charity OneKind as some of the industry’s worst due to mortality rates, parasite infestations, stress levels, overstocking, genetic deformities and escapes, among other factors.  Overall, the analysis ranked Mowi as the second-worst out of eight farmed fish producers on animal welfare.

Mowi also misleadingly claims that Ducktrap products are «from Maine» and «from the coast of Maine,» when in fact the products are made from salmon sourced from industrial salmon farms outside the U.S.
