SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The Linux Foundation, today announced the formation of the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF). The OpenSSF is a cross-industry collaboration that brings together leaders to improve the security of open source software (OSS) by building a broader community with targeted initiatives and best practices. It combines efforts from the Core Infrastructure Initiative, GitHub’s Open Source Security Coalition and other open source security work from founding governing board members GitHub, Google, IBM, JPMorgan Chase, Microsoft, NCC Group, OWASP Foundation and Red Hat, among others. Additional founding members include ElevenPaths, GitLab, HackerOne, Intel, Okta, Purdue, SAFECode, StackHawk, Trail of Bits, Uber and VMware.

Open source software has become pervasive in data centers, consumer devices and services, representing its value among technologists and businesses alike. Because of its development process, open source that ultimately reaches end users has a chain of contributors and dependencies. It is important that those responsible for their user or organization’s security are able to understand and verify the security of this dependency chain.

The OpenSSF brings together the industry’s most important open source security initiatives and the individuals and companies that support them. The Linux Foundation’s Core Infrastructure Initiative (CII), founded in response to the 2014 Heartbleed bug, and the Open Source Security Coalition, founded by the GitHub Security Lab, are just a couple of the projects that will be brought together under the new OpenSSF. The Foundation’s governance, technical community and its decisions will be transparent, and any specifications and projects developed will be vendor agnostic. The OpenSSF is committed to collaboration and working both upstream and with existing communities to advance open source security for all.

«We believe open source is a public good and across every industry we have a responsibility to come together to improve and support the security of open source software we all depend on,» said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. «Ensuring open source security is one of the most important things we can do, and it requires all of us around the world to assist in the effort. The OpenSSF will provide that forum for a truly collaborative, cross-industry effort.»

With the formalization of the group, the open governance structure is established and includes a Governing Board (GB), a Technical Advisory Council (TAC) and a separate oversight for each working group and project. OpenSSF intends to host a variety of open source technical initiatives to support security for the world’s most critical open source software, all of which will be done in the open on GitHub.

NEWARK, N.J., Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Duality Technologies, a leading provider of Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs) enabling collaboration between organizations on sensitive data, announced today a new partnership with NumFOCUS, a non-profit organization which sponsors the use of open-source software in research, data science and scientific computing. The partnership between Duality and NumFOCUS is aimed at creating a privacy-preserving collaboration platform enabling academic institutions and public agencies to evaluate the effects of grant-making, scholarships and other financial support on students’ performance, future occupations and contributions to academic research.

In cooperation with the Institute for Research on Innovation and Science (IRIS) at the University of Michigan, Duality will develop a privacy-preserving data science framework based on the PALISADE open-source Homomorphic Encryption (HE) library in order to carry out secure analysis of sensitive student data while keeping Personally Identifiable Information (PII) private.

The new framework offers academic institutions and public agencies tools to conduct privacy-preserving research on the impact and the societal benefit of financial support for students. Previously, researchers had not been able to comprehensively analyze relevant data held by different public agencies due to data privacy regulations and agencies’ reluctance to share such sensitive information. Socio-economic data indicative of scholarship recipients’ lifestyles and occupations are inherently sensitive and until now, researchers had to undertake cumbersome anonymization processes with available data, limiting the studies’ scope and reliability.

The development of the framework is also supported by the Albert P. Sloan Foundation, which issued a grant to NumFOCUS to promote the development of the open-source software for scientific research based on the PALISADE library.

«We are excited to launch this new collaboration with the remarkable people at NumFOCUS and the University of Michigan’s IRIS research group, one of the leading institutions in its field,» said Dr. Kurt Rohloff, Co-Founder and CTO of Duality Technologies. «Together, we are enabling academic teams to leverage sensitive data held by a variety of public agencies. Highly sensitive personal data must be protected, and now research teams can collaborate with public agencies on such rich data in order to glean important insights without compromising on data privacy.»

The framework utilizes Homomorphic Encryption (HE), an advanced encryption method that protects data during computation, allowing multiple parties to run privacy-preserving analytics on encrypted data. Already deployed and proven in the financial industry, this will enable academic institutions and public agencies for the first time to comprehensively measure the impact of their grant-making and to maximize the impact of such support for students.

«Homomorphic Encryption is a secure and standardized method which is being used more and more frequently to conduct privacy-preserving data analytics in a wide variety of disciplines,» said Leah Silen, Executive Director of NumFOCUS. «The framework under development by Duality represents a real breakthrough in research on social data, and we are proud to make the open-source PALISADE library widely available to the research community. Our heartfelt appreciation to the Sloan Foundation for its grant, which will allow more academic teams to engage in collaborative analytics on such sensitive data.»

The PALISADE open-source HE library, which forms the basis for the new framework, was co-founded by Dr. Kurt Rohloff with Dr. Yuriy Polyakov and Dr. Dave Cousins, both Principal Scientists at Duality Technologies, with initial funding from DARPA and additional sponsorship by NumFOCUS.

«The privacy-preserving framework being developed by Duality will include interfaces and tools that integrate seamlessly with our current research environments,» said Prof. Jason Owen-Smith, Executive Director of the Institute for Research on Innovation and Science (IRIS) at the University of Michigan. «It will enable our teams to utilize proven methods while facilitating access to sensitive data, which will translate into greater efficiency and deeper insights, all while preserving individual privacy. This project fits perfectly into our mission to understand, explain and improve the public value of research and higher education.»

KOALA Launches Groundbreaking Vacation Rental Marketplace to Reshape the Global Timeshare Industry

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Announcing the launch of KOALA, an innovative vacation rental marketplace positioned to revitalize the $30 billion timeshare industry. Cofounded by CEO Mike Kennedy and COO James Burbridge, KOALA has raised $3.4 million in Series A capital led by investment specialists Ira Lubert and Dean Adler. The platform enables timeshare owners to easily rent their properties to anyone in the world, while offering vacationers the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a timeshare without actually purchasing one.

«KOALA satisfies a previously unfulfilled need in the travel space,» said Kennedy. «Travelers are often asked to choose between multiple hotel rooms and unverified home rentals whose glossy photos, to put it mildly, don’t reflect reality. KOALA connects travelers to verified listings with the space of a home rental and the amenities of their favorite hotel. Moreover, KOALA’s direct-from-owner listings offer travelers significant savings relative to what they’d pay for similar accommodations on the large travel sites.»

Kennedy acknowledges that now might not seem an opportune time to wade into the travel sector. However, he explains that the accommodations on KOALA are different from both apartment rentals and the typical hotel: «Travelers on KOALA get instant access to major brands like Wyndham, Marriott, and Hilton—all of which have implemented detailed cleaning and operational procedures to keep guests safe. Additionally, the condo-style spaces available on KOALA take much of the hassle out of social distancing.»

A Travel Segment Ripe for Innovation
Working as a Senior Sales Executive for the Hilton Club, Kennedy recognized that both owners and renters had to navigate a complex and outdated marketplace that in some cases forced renters to pay by physical check. Kennedy was inspired to «change the conversation» by creating a technology-based platform that enabled owners and renters to easily and securely connect.

Key to the conversation was input from Burbridge, who brought two decades of entrepreneurial experience in technology to his role designing the KOALA platform. «Our goal was to create a platform that would empower timeshare owners, draw a new generation of guests, and bring certainty to timeshare travel while giving everyone a voice,» Burbridge recalls. «KOALA’s innovations are game-changing – and long overdue.»

A New World of Accommodations for a New Generation
KOALA’s streamlined search function makes it easy for renters to browse timeshare accommodations. Each listing offers details on the resort’s location and onsite amenities, as well as images. KOALA’s listings include a wealth of highly-rated resorts in key destinations, such as the Sheraton Broadway Plantation in Myrtle Beach, Wyndham Park City, and Marriott’s Canyon Villas in Phoenix. Most are set in resorts with prime features such as beachfront access, infinity pools, and full-service concierges. Available suites range from studios to four-bedroom penthouses. As an example of the savings available to travelers on KOALA, Kennedy points to the site’s Park City listings, where 2-bedroom units that sleep eight go for up to 40% off the same accommodations available on major booking platforms.

Market Access for Owners for Less
KOALA simplifies what has historically been a complex rental process. Listing on the platform is easy, requiring a simple creation of a free account. Owners select their resort location, available dates for rental, and set their own price. KOALA provides professional-quality resort images and a dedicated support team to help owners make their listings as appealing as possible.

Unlike its competitors, KOALA charges no fees for annual memberships (or to browse listings). Owners receive $1 million in host insurance to protect their properties from damage, and can rely on secured online payments from renters. With no upfront fees charged to owners, KOALA’s cut is just 8% commission per successful booking. The access to a new generation of timeshare travelers is complimentary.

«We named KOALA to bring a fuzzy presence to the notoriously hard-edged world of timeshares,» concludes Kennedy, «but more than that, KOALA brings a new way to transact, travel, and enjoy stunning resorts without the hassle. As travel picks up again, we’re positioned to benefit every player in timeshares.»
