Explosive C2 Growth Leads to New Company Headquarters, New Clients, and New Opportunities

BERRYVILLE, Va., Feb. 26, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — «Recycling and reusing the widest scope of material at the highest efficiency levels possible in our industry make us a great partner for any organization that wants to demonstrate corporate environmental responsibility while recovering investments,» says C2 CEO Chris Hansen, «and the complimentary nature of our relationships allow us to have unlimited amounts of partnerships within any given industry.» (<a target="_blank"…

BERRYVILLE, Va., Feb. 26, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — «Recycling and reusing the widest scope of material at the highest efficiency levels possible in our industry make us a great partner for any organization that wants to demonstrate corporate environmental responsibility while recovering investments,» says C2 CEO Chris Hansen, «and the complimentary nature of our relationships allow us to have unlimited amounts of partnerships within any given industry.» (www.tryc2.com)

Founded in 1998 by Chris and Sharon Hansen, C2 Management occupied a 1,000 SF warehouse in Upperville, Virginia for its first few years before moving to Berryville. The company steadily grew out of two other Berryville locations before completing its 100,000 SF Headquarters move over the past year. The company used the downtime COVID-19 created to streamline its processes and train its employees, and the investment has paid off. Approaching 10 million in revenue with 10% growth this past year, C2 is seeing its first Fortune 500 clients and is expecting more soon.

Tim Reichert, CEO of Energy Sherlock, a Virginia-based firm specializing in creating energy efficient and cybersecure buildings, has seen huge value in the footprint it can market to its clients because of its C2 relationship. «Being able to talk with clients about the responsible dismantling, recycling, or reuse of everything from cyber-sensitive IT equipment to furniture is extremely beneficial,» says Reichert.

The company will soon be announcing its membership in TERRA, the largest network of certified recyclers in North America that promotes certification. C2 is an R2 certified recycler, the gold standard industry certification requiring audits of its practices.

«We can directly attribute growth to many of the organizations and associations we have joined that are only even tangentially related to what we do,» says CEO Hansen. «Key to this kind of growth for us has been the commitment to stay active in these groups and consistently share our story.»

C2 strongly believes that sharing its story and its best practices with the industry will result in collaborative efforts that will be profitable and better for the environment. Recently E-Scrap News magazine published a piece written by CEO Hansen that spotlighted the 15 year effort C2 has made to develop its own software that can accommodate the wide range of industrial equipment and IT assets it handles (Click here for article). The company has been contacted by multiple organizations that are either interested in using it or selling it to others.

Already contracted to provide electronics recycling to any government agency in the Washington D.C. area, the company expects its GSA relationship to keep growing as well.

Currently C2 is the Mid-Atlantic’s largest provider of surplus asset recovery services, and the expertise they have gained since 1998 makes them an ideal partner to outsource obsolescence to. In 23 years, C2 has developed a network of over 200,000 unique buyers.

«Our partnership with any given corporation can be financed entirely from sharing revenue derived from repurposing and recycling their assets,» says Hansen.

With its R2 certification and growing nationwide reputation for handling the entire spectrum of recycling, C2 is already turning its partnerships with other recyclers into a profit center for the company and expects this to continue. These partnerships save trucking expenses and decrease the C2 carbon footprint, something the company cares about a great deal.

Considering the many different ways that C2 can grow is something that Chris Hansen never gets tired of but is also something he is always thankful for.

«This past year has been a tough, tough time for a lot of individuals and a lot of corporations. Our thoughts and prayers are with those that this virus has affected, and we look forward to a speedy recovery.»

ASPCA Commends Federal Lawmakers for Introducing Bill to Protect Animals During Disasters

WASHINGTON, Feb. 26, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today commends U.S. Reps. Dina Titus (D-NV) and Rodney Davis (R-IL) for reintroducing the Providing Responsible Emergency Plans for Animals at Risk of Emerging Disasters (PREPARED) Act, to require businesses that profit off animals – such as animal dealers, research institutions, large scale commercial dog breeders, and zoos – to create well-formed contingency plans for emergencies to better protect the animals in their care during disaster situations.

«The unprecedented winter storms in Texas demonstrate how a lack of preparation for disasters can lead to dire consequences for animals as well as the humans who risk their lives to protect them,» said Matt Bershadker, ASPCA President and CEO. «Facilities that hold licenses under the Animal Welfare Act bear a special responsibility to plan ahead for severe weather, fires, floods, and other emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic, and we thank Representatives Titus and Davis for their efforts to protect these very vulnerable animals.»

«Sadly, through countless disasters, we’ve witnessed that if animal facilities do not have a plan in place when emergency strikes, it is already too late,» said Rep. Titus. «The safety of animals shouldn’t be an afterthought. This bipartisan bill will ensure that zoos, commercial breeders, and research centers are able to save the lives of animals under their care by preparing for disasters ahead of time. I’m grateful for the support of Representative Davis and the many animal advocacy organizations that are helping advance this important legislation.»

«When natural disasters strike, animals are put in danger the same as people and property which is why it is imperative those caring for them have an emergency plan in place,» said Rep. Davis. «The bill that Rep. Titus and I are introducing will require USDA-regulated facilities to have a disaster emergency plan in place to ensure the welfare of the animals under their care.»

The PREPARED Act requires facilities licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) to identify emergencies likely to occur at their location and outline specific tasks that staff should take if such events occur. They must establish a clear chain of command for employees to follow and ensure that all pertinent employees are trained on the plans kept on file with the USDA.

To help avoid future tragedies at AWA licensed facilities, such as the 8,000 animals killed at a medical school in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, the USDA finalized rulemaking in December 2012 requiring these facilities to develop contingency plans. Unfortunately, since 2013 the USDA has indefinitely delayed the implementation of this rule, putting animals in jeopardy. In the FY2021 Omnibus and COVID Relief and Response Act, Congress directed the USDA to reconsider the disaster plan requirement after years of delay. The PREPARED Act would permanently codify the essential elements of the delayed rule to ensure animals are cared for in emergencies. The need for this reform has only intensified in recent years with more frequent and severe weather patterns taking hold.

The ASPCA deploys nationwide to assist in relocation, search-and-rescue, sheltering and placement of animals during disaster situations including severe weather, wildfires, tornadoes and floods. Additionally, the ASPCA works closely with local agencies across the country to help enhance animal response capabilities through grants and training opportunities.

Relocating homeless animals during a disaster situation is a lifesaving component of disaster relief work as it not only gives shelter animals a second chance to find new, loving homes, but also frees up essential space and resources so local animal welfare organizations can provide support for impacted pet owners and displaced pets. To assist Texas animal shelters impacted by the recent weather crisis, the ASPCA transported more than 170 dogs and cats via ground and air to shelters in the Northeast where they will be cared for until they can be adopted into safe, loving homes.

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 26, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Environmental Business Journal® (EBJ), a business research publication which has provided strategic business intelligence to the environmental industry since 1988, has honored Heritage Environmental Services (Heritage) with 2020 EBJ Business Achievement Awards for COVID Response Services, Battery Recycling (New Practice Area), and a 50-Year Recognition.

«2020 was certainly an exceptional year for our society, the economy and the environmental industry,» said Grant Ferrier, president of Environmental Business International Inc. (EBI, Inc.), and editor of Environmental Business Journal. «Unique enough that we added two major categories to the EBJ Awards: COVID Resilience that recognizes companies that adapted to work-at-home, travel, field services and other restrictions, as well as rapidly changing client needs; and COVID Response that recognizes companies that developed or accelerated new business initiatives, innovations and entire business units to support the environment, health & safety needs of their diverse client sectors.»

Throughout the pandemic, Heritage has actively provided response services to help curb the spread of COVID-19. Services include both routine and emergency disinfection in addition to regular hazardous, industrial and medical waste transportation and disposal. Heritage developed a program to ensure safe, secure transportation and disposal of PPE, diverting this wastestream from landfills to an energy recovery facility to be thermally destroyed.

«I’m proud of how our team continued to service customers with their everyday waste needs while stepping up to perform thousands of COVID disinfecting jobs, helping them keep their companies, employees, and clients safe,» said Rudy Streng, Senior Vice President at Heritage. «We also collected N95 masks from hundreds of hospitals across the country, took them to disinfection facilities, and safely returned them to those front line workers.»

Heritage was recognized by EBJ with a 50-Year Recognition award, honoring environmental industry firms founded in 1970. Partnering with innovative organizations and launching a new division, Heritage Battery Recycling, is one of many steps the company is taking to ensure the business sustains its track record of success for another 50 years. Heritage has positioned itself to be on the cutting edge of electronic vehicle battery reuse and recycling, receiving an EBJ award for this New Practice Area.

LONDON, Feb. 26, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Klöckner Pentaplast (kp or the company), a leading global manufacturer of high barrier protective packaging solutions with industry-leading use of recycled content, today announced the launch of its new sustainability strategy, ‘Investing in Better’. With the new ‘Investing in Better’ sustainability strategy, the company has set itself ten clear targets for long-term improvement grouped into three key objectives: Close the Loop, which commits kp to using more recycled material, closing the packaging loop and taking every opportunity to make packaging recyclable. Just in the last year, the global pandemic has triggered many profound changes and exposed significant global inequities. It’s critical that we’re embarking on this journey now, expanding beyond our recycling efforts. Going forward, our commitments now include the continuation of work to raise awareness and collaborate with key stakeholders on recycling for a circular economy, as well as reducing our carbon footprint, supporting the communities where we live and work, becoming more diverse and inclusive as a company, and ensuring a safe environment where all kp colleagues can thrive.»

In the new article «Examining food purchase behavior and food values during the COVID-19 pandemicBrenna Ellison from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Brandon McFadden from the University of Delaware, Bradley Rickard from Cornell University and Norbert Wilson from Duke University dive deeper in how consumers’ food purchasing behavior evolved during the first several weeks of the pandemic.

Ellison says, «Most food spending went toward food-at-home (FAH), with large decreases in spending for food-away-from-home (FAFH). The decrease in FAFH spending was driven by significant decreases in spending on eating out in restaurants. We observed increases in spending for carry out within FAFH, but not enough to offset the decreases in eating out. We also observed a significant increase in the proportion of households who utilized online grocery shopping. Finally, we found that food values were relatively stable throughout our study, with taste still being most important to the average consumer.»

SmartPTO Becomes Eligible for Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP)

GREENVILLE, S.C., Feb. 26, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Viatec  announces their flagship product SmartPTO is now incentive eligible under the California Air Resources Board’s Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project. The incentive project was launched to accelerate the adoption of cleaner, more-efficient trucks and buses. Viatec’s SmartPTO allows bucket truck operators seeking an ePTO solution to begin their transition into using electricity as a fuel.

«Viatec’s goal is to provide reliable electrification solutions to help fleets reduce emissions, thus assisting them in shifting away from petroleum products while providing workers with safer and healthier job sites. SmartPTO offers a cost-effective way for fleets to use their existing trucks without the harmful emissions associated with engine idling,» said Anjali Deodhar, Viatec’s VP of Sales.

«CARB is pleased to add the Viatec SmartPTO electric power take off system to the growing lineup of HVIP-eligible near-zero emission technologies. Trucks outfitted with the Viatec system provide zero-emission operation in communities and fuel savings when performing work such as critical utility line maintenance and repair,» said Dr. Sydney Vergis, Head of the CARB Mobile Source Control Division

A Cost-Effective, Retrofittable Technology

The SmartPTO system is available with either a 14.4 kWh or a 21.6 kWh battery pack, allowing a work truck operator to use battery-electric power for the vehicle’s work functions for a full workday. The system is quickly installed on any new and most existing chassis.

The SmartPTO system is charged by either a level one 120 v outlet or a standard level two J1772 charger used by most light duty electric vehicles – an easier infrastructure option for fleets that can use any existing outlet to charge the ePTO without the heavier power loads traditionally associated with work truck electrification.

SmartPTO is deployed across all major bucket truck brands with several major electric utilities in the US and Canada. It is sold and serviced through multiple OEM and reseller partners in North America.

Safer and Healthier Jobsites Without the Risk of Downtime

«California’s utilities have historically struggled with electrification goals, as their fleet of bucket trucks needs to be ready to work all-day, every day until power can be restored. SmartPTO provides that flexibility since it does not preclude use of the traditional PTO should the battery be depleted during extended field operations,» said Urvi Nagrani, an advisor to Viatec.
