Prime determinants of growth

Surge in demand for commercial vehicles and significant rise in automobile manufacturing drive the global automotive differential market. However, increase in manufacturing of vehicles with in-wheel electric motors restrain the market growth. On the other hand, manufacturing of electronic limited slip differentials offers new opportunities in coming years.

The front-wheel drive (FWD) segment to maintain its lead position throughout the forecast period

Based on drive type, the front-wheel drive (FWD) segment contributed to more than half of the total share of the global automotive differential market in 2018, and is estimated to maintain its lead position throughout the forecast period. This is due to its attribute to reduce weight, production costs, and fuel consumption. However, the all-wheel drive (AWD) segment is expected to witness the highest CAGR of 6.1% from 2019 to 2026, owing to increase in power and better control than other wheel drive systems along with improved handling proficiencies on different surfaces.

The passenger car segment to continue its dominant position in terms of revenue by 2026

Based on vehicle type, the passenger car segment held the highest market share of the global automotive differential market, contributing to more than four-fifths of the total market share in 2018, and is estimated to continue its dominant position in terms of revenue by 2026. This is due to increase in infrastructural development activities. However, the electric vehicle segment is expected to register the fastest CAGR of 13.6% from 2019 to 2026. This is attributed to increase in demand for fuel efficient vehicles and government regulations for emission reduction.

Asia-Pacific to offer lucrative opportunities, North America to grow at moderate pace

Based on region, Asia-Pacific accounted for the highest share on the basis of revenue, contributing to more than two-fifths of the global automotive differential market in 2018, and is expected to continue its highest share during the forecast period. Moreover, this region is projected to register the fastest CAGR of 6.4% from 2019 to 2026. It is a lucrative segment, owing to surge in demand for commercial vehicles and the growth of the automotive industry. However, North America held nearly one-fifth of the total market share in 2018 and is estimated to grow at moderate pace.

SYDNEY, Oct. 26, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Like many other countries, studies show that Australians have increasingly turned to online shopping in 2020.

Volkswagen Australia has experienced these trends first-hand. Having sold over 460 cars online to the value of AUD$36 million since April, Volkswagen Australia today launched the world’s smallest car dealership, an activation that highlights the need for more choice and convenience in the way Aussies shop for cars. The miniature dealership stands 28cm tall but features a new Augmented Reality (AR) experience to bring an online showroom to consumers allowing them to ‘try on’ and then fully customise and buy a new car, without leaving their home.

Hi-res assets:
http://news.medianet.com.au/volkswagen/world-smallest-car-dealership

Australian online online during COVID-19 has accelerated to 15%, up from 9%, and this is set to continue to around 25% by 2025. This increase in demand has seen Aussies not only embrace online shopping for the essentials but now also for higher value items, with Google trends showing that searches for buying cars online have doubled since lockdown and Volkswagen’s website traffic has had a record year in 2020, rising by 18% YOY.

Jason Bradshaw, Chief Customer and Marketing Officer, Volkswagen, says, «Many people wouldn’t think that Australians are prepared to buy a car online, but they are. The launch of Volkswagen’s smallest dealership and AR experience is all about making buying a car online easier and more convenient so Aussies can find, test out and then customise the perfect car for them.»

Research shows that the majority of Australians (60%) want retailers and brands to save them time when shopping, signaling that there is a growing importance for shoppers to be able to try out items digitally before they take the plunge.

AR is playing an increasingly important role in consumer shopping experiences with 1 in 2 (49%) saying they would like to use AR as part of their online purchasing to get a better feel for a product. Volkswagen’s new AR experience aims to tackle just that by helping transform the way people can shop for cars by bringing the immersive, smallest car dealership experience to Australians, wherever they are. It uses the most advanced graphics for realism while letting Aussies choose their car colour and play with what it looks like on their driveway, at the beach or supermarket, before diving inside to look at the interiors, all from the palm of their hands.

Commenting on the latest shopping trends, Anastasia Lloyd-Wallis, Consumer Behaviour Expert, Retail Doctor Group, says, «Australians love to shop online and we’re seeing this trend increase across all ages and demographics. We’re not just seeing consumers shopping for their everyday groceries and low-cost items, but we’ve seen a huge jump in people feeling comfortable to buy higher value items, including cars, online. We expect this trend to continue as more interactive and immersive experiences become available to help people do more pre-research online and feel even more comfortable that they have found the right products for them before purchase.

«In the last six months we’ve seen brands focused on finding innovative ways to stay connected with their customers which has led to a shift forward of about five years in digital innovations. These innovations are elevating online shopping experiences away from being simple transactions to become fully immersive experiences with Volkswagen’s AR experience a great example of this. Additionally, 63% of people state that they would be extremely likely to purchase a car online in the future, and innovations like this will help give people that extra layer of confidence to make those bigger ticket purchases from home.»

Features of the custom-built AR technology also include the ability to test out the lights, open and close the doors, look into and interact with the interiors for both of the new small SUVs – T-Roc and T-Cross, with more cars to follow. The experience also allows consumers to arrange a test drive or buy online – all in one place.

Jason Bradshaw continues: «During COVID-19, we’ve seen our online store also helping support our network of dealerships, particularly those in the state of Victoria, as buying online also enables a safe and contact-free way to buy cars. We’re continually looking for ways to enhance our customers shopping experiences and are excited to be able to give Australians the opportunity to «try on» our latest range of small SUVs in their own time, on their own driveway, to help them feel confident that they have found the right car for them with a brand they know and trust. This is just the first phase of the AR as we’ll continue to add more cars to the experience over time to let even more Australians try on our full range of cars.»

About Volkswagen

Volkswagen was born in 1937 of a desire to create a vehicle that could bring German engineering to the masses – the ‘People’s Car’ – and this is a position that it has maintained to this day.

The company hit the open road in Australia in 1953 with the arrival of its very first Beetle. Since then it’s clocked up a lot of Ks and passed many milestones -from the Passat winning Wheels Magazine car of the year way back in 1974, through to selling more than 600,000 vehicles right across the country.

Volkswagen is proud of its history in Australia and is focused on developing new models, services and technologies to help Australians enjoy their driving experience. It’s fair to say we’re far from reaching the end of the road.

In April 2020, Volkswagen launched its online store enabling Australians to build their own car, customised to their needs and preferences, book a test drive and purchase a car online. To date, over 450 cars have been sold online, worth over $36 million.

Volkswagen Group Australia was incorporated in 2001.

  • First units based on the new technology platform to be shipped in 2021, aiming to power some of the world’s most challenging mobility applications

HONEOYE FALLS, New York, Oct. 26, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Hydrogen mobility and clean energy company, HYZON Motors Inc («HYZON») has today revealed new test data from the latest generation of its proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells.

Third party tests confirm HYZON Motors’ new liquid-cooled fuel cell stack leads the world in power density.

HYZON’s new automotive grade PEM fuel cells have been optimized for durability and long operating life, addressing the most demanding usage scenarios for commercial vehicles and machinery.

This specifically includes challenging, high utilization mobility applications such as trucks, trains, and airplanes.

Most fuel cell modules used in heavy vehicles to-date deliver continuous power around 100 kilowatts (kW) or less – with peak power density under 3kW/liter, whereas recent test data validated by highly respected testing and certification services business TUV Rheinland shows HYZON’s new PEM fuel cells achieve volumetric power density exceeding 6kW/l, and gravimetric power density exceeding 5.5kW/l (between end hardware).

Although the performance data is from short stack testing, it validates the potential of using full power fuel cells up to 500hp (370kW) for heavy mobility applications, reducing dependence on batteries and therefore saving on weight, size and cost.

The new PEM fuel cell is the result of nearly 20 years of fuel cell development

Craig Knight, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of HYZON Motors, commented:

«For nearly 20 years now, the HYZON founding team have been fully focused on developing world class proton exchange membrane fuel cell technology – the ‘engine’ of any hydrogen-powered vehicle – with the aim of producing the world’s most advanced fuel cell to accelerate the energy transition and decarbonize heavy commercial mobility.

«With greater electrification of equipment and systems, there is a need for more powerful and lighter fuel cells to power heavy vehicles, machinery, trains and aircraft. This is where our PEM fuel cells will really excel; high power output and high power density enable applications previously out of reach of fuel cell technology.»

With production facilities in North America, Europe and Asia, HYZON expects to deliver thousands of fuel cell trucks and buses globally over the next three years. By 2025, HYZON’s expected turn-key capacity will be more than 40,000 fuel cell vehicles annually. Production of the groundbreaking PEM fuel cell is expected to start in 2021.

HYZON is a global supplier of hydrogen fuel cell-powered commercial vehicles, including heavy duty trucks, buses and coaches. Established as a spin-off from Horizon in early 2020, HYZON commercializes Horizon’s almost 20 years of fuel cell technology development for applications in global mobility applications.

About HYZON Motors Inc  (www.hyzonmotors.com)

HYZON Motors Inc is a US-headquartered hydrogen vehicle company on a mission to help operators of heavy vehicles transition to cost effective, zero emission, sustainable operations. HYZON achieves this by offering attractive economics with no compromise on performance.

HYZON has also made significant commercial progress in Europe, Asia and Australia. The company anticipates its novel zero emission mobility model will expand in global markets over the next few years.

  • Converts Heavy-Duty Trucks & Light Commercial Vehicles from Hydraulic to Electric Power Steering
  • Enables Heavier Vehicles to Take Advantage of Advanced Safety, Comfort and Fuel Economy

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Oct. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Nexteer Automotive launches High-Output Electric Power Steering (EPS) that delivers advanced safety and comfort features as well as enhanced fuel efficiency for heavy-duty (HD) trucks and light commercial vehicles (LCVs).

Nexteer High-Output Electric Power Steering System (PRNewsfoto/Nexteer Automotive)

Now with the ability to steer these vehicle types electrically, drivers of HD trucks and LCVs can benefit from savings at the gas pump and from advanced features such as lane keep assist, crosswind compensation, trailer assist and more.

High-Output EPS increases the steering capacity of Nexteer’s industry-leading Rack-Assist EPS (REPS) system. A High-Output EPS system can steer up to 24 kilonewtons (kN) of load compared with 10-15 kN for a typical REPS system.

«With Nexteer’s High-Output EPS system, larger vehicles like heavy-duty trucks can now be steered with an electric system instead of a hydraulic one — opening the door for EPS’s advanced safety, comfort and fuel efficiency while staying true to the truck brand’s steering feel,» said Robin Milavec, Senior Vice President, Executive Board Director, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), Nexteer Automotive. «As a steering specialist and the global leader in steering technologies for trucks, we are never satisfied with the status quo, which is why we continue to push research and development activities that continuously improve our EPS offerings and benefit our OEM customers and drivers.»

With much of the HD truck and LCV market currently using hydraulic power steering (HPS) systems, High-Output EPS offers automotive OEMs an opportunity to differentiate their HD trucks and LCVs in a competitive marketplace for consumer attention and loyalty.

High-Output EPS can also be utilized on heavy electric vehicles. Steering up to 24 kN of load on a 12-volt electrical system would have been thought to be unachievable just a few years ago, but now that capability exists with High-Output EPS.

To date, Nexteer has booked three electric applications for High-Output EPS, including a full-size electric pick-up truck, an electric LCV (delivery van) and an electric autonomous Level 4 people mover (with no steering wheel).

In addition to High-Output EPS, Nexteer offers a complete portfolio of EPS systems that can steer vehicles of all sizes. Other EPS solutions from Nexteer include REPS, Dual Pinion-Assist EPS (DPEPS), Single Pinion-Assist EPS (SPEPS), Column-Assist EPS (CEPS) and High-Availability EPS.

ABOUT NEXTEER

Nexteer Automotive (HK 1316), a global leader in intuitive motion control, is a multi-billion dollar global steering and driveline business delivering electric and hydraulic power steering systems, steering columns, driveline systems, as well as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving enabling technologies for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). UPPSALA, Sweden, Oct. 22, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Latest version of IAR Embedded Workbench for Renesas RH850 further strengthens automotive embedded applications development through added support for position-independent code

IAR Systems®, the future-proof supplier of software tools and services for embedded development, adds new functionality to its development tools for Renesas’ RH850 automotive microcontrollers (MCUs). The latest version of the complete C/C++ compiler and debugger toolchain IAR Embedded Workbench® for Renesas RH850 can now optionally generate position-independent code and/or position-independent data.

The added functionality is very useful in systems where applications are loaded dynamically. When using position-independent code and read-only data (ROPI), the compiler in IAR Embedded Workbench for RH850 will generate code that uses PC-relative references for addressing code and read-only data. Even though the linker places the code and read-only data at fixed locations, the application will still be executed correctly when the image is placed at a different address. Typical use cases for dynamically loaded applications within the automotive industry include, for example, when using the capability of the application to upgrade its own firmware over CAN (Controller Area Network).

Through IAR Embedded Workbench, IAR Systems provides its customers with the market’s most diverse MCU support as well as adapted licensing options to fit different organizations’ needs, including a functional safety edition certified by TÜV SÜD according to IEC 61508, ISO 26262 and EN 50128. This flexibility is extended to the build environment as the build tools supports implementation in Linux-based frameworks for automated application build and test processes. The tools enable large-scale deployments of critical software building and testing and are suitable for installations ranging from a few licenses on a small build server, to massive installations with several hundreds of parallel builds active at the same time.

The toolchain is compliant with the latest C language standard ISO/IEC 9899:2018 and the latest C++ standard ISO/IEC 14882:2017, ensuring high-quality, future-proof code. To simplify peripheral setup, IAR Embedded Workbench for RH850 supports the Renesas Smart Configurator tool, which enables automatic generation of control programs for peripheral modules, and pin setting from the GUI with built-in cross-checks to avoid potential contention with multiplexed functions.

Solar Supercapacitor is Dream Ticket for Vehicles, Says IDTechEx

BOSTON, Oct. 22, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — IDTechEx report, «Solar Vehicles 2021-2041» notes that cars with solar bodywork have long-range. Tough sell. Even longer range is being achieved by those crudely shoving in an enormous battery. The real significance is that Lightyear and Sono Motors cars with solar bodywork achieve range with half the battery and, for the gentle, never suffer a charging point. Consequently, solar adds space, reduces fire risk, reduces end-of-life disposal misery. Hyundai is committed. Toyota researches solar making three times the electricity.

    ID TechEx Logo

For cars and for the robot shuttles that will replace them in some cities, supercapacitors will multiply these solar delights, being fast enough to compensate passing shadows, for example. Already, they propel factory automatic guided vehicles, easily charged frequently in seconds, where reliability and fit-and-forget gives payback. Explore the IDTechEx report, «Supercapacitor Markets, Technology Roadmap, Opportunities 2021-2041«. The latest supercapacitors escape battery safety and disposal issues. They waste 1% of electricity, not 15% for batteries.

As «AGVs for humans», robot shuttles trialing in 20 countries have billions of dollars of investment analyzed in the IDTechEx report, «Robot Shuttles and Autonomous Buses 2020-2040«. Symmetrical, so no U-turns, gated to go relatively slowly, space-efficient, they will enter malls, cross piazzas, use paths because they safely empower the disabled and the young.

Shuttles are not yet viable with supercapacitors despite deep discharge meaning less kWh needed, somewhat offsetting their larger size, and despite effectively infinite cycle life. Three steps get there – robotic fast charging like AGVs, solar bodywork, meaning even less energy storage and the newly-selling 100 Wh/kg supercapacitors – up ten times. Enjoy trouble-free, 30-year robot shuttles, city cars, city buses with rock bottom cost of ownership?

Contrast most electric cars. They sell on up-front-price and range but consider the experimental French supercapacitor-dominant shuttle that also has a battery. Appraise the many supercapacitor researchers demonstrating even greater Wh/kg in IDTechEx report, «Supercapacitor Materials and Formats 2020-2040«. There is a roadmap here.

Meanwhile, companies such as Lightyear selling solar bodywork capability could usefully offer leverage with supercapacitors long before the demonstrated supercapacitor car bodies become commercial and later integrated with solar bodywork.
