Although the automotive industry is well on its way to a highly automated future, this realization is still a few years away. Sadly, these statistics show that there is still much to be done in preventing deaths and injuries caused by vehicles both on roads and in the workplace.

Driver visibility is key to maintaining road safety. What a driver can see from their position inside a vehicle plays an important role in directing road safety legislation. However, direct vision, i.e. what a driver can see directly through their vehicle’s windows, is not enough to prevent collisions caused by blind spots.

If the driver is not looking, they will not see

While driver visibility can be aided by passive systems, such as mirrors and cameras, these still require driver input in order to spot objects or people. In the time it takes a driver to check mirrors and react, a vehicle could travel as far as 30 feet, even at speeds as low as 3mph.

Hyundai hosted the virtual event with the Singapore government by connecting the Namyang R&D Center in Korea and Jurong Town Hall in Singapore as a safety measure amid COVID-19 pandemic. For certain scenarios, sensors do not require ultra-high resolution and ultra-long ranging; rather, they demand a careful balance between performance, reliability, and cost. PandarXT was developed to address these specific industrial requirements and others. The new system architecture, based on Hesai’s self-developed LiDAR ASICs, delivers additional performance enhancements. PandarXT has a minimum range of zero and outputs valid point cloud even when an object directly touches the sensor’s enclosure. It also has millimeter-level ranging accuracy and superb precision. Furthermore, its improved reflectivity accuracy and greater dynamic range enable accurate and consistent detection of retroreflectors, low-reflectivity targets, and object boundaries with sudden changes in reflectivity. Consistent with every LiDAR in Hesai’s Pandar series, PandarXT has undergone and passed stringent reliability testing to ensure robustness and reliability in any operational environment.
