CANBERRA, Australia, Oct. 12, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Seeing Machines, the advanced computer vision technology company that designs AI-powered operator monitoring systems to improve transport safety, has announced it is formally expanding its leading automotive driver monitoring system (DMS) into an overall vehicle interior/Occupant Monitoring System (OMS). The expanded offering will be available for automotive production programs starting as early as 2023.

Seeing Machines estimates that its entry into OMS opens an incremental market opportunity, worth up to a total of A$1.5 billion through to 2030, with an estimated revenue opportunity for the Company exceeding A$350 million.

This expansion is consistent with Seeing Machines’s «safety first» focus and leverages important breakthroughs in achieving uncompromised head, eye, and face tracking for driver monitoring with a Wide Field of View (WFOV) camera system. It will extend the Company’s highly effective attention, distraction, impairment, identification, and other human state measures from the vehicle driver to vehicle passenger(s) concurrently.

The introduction of a WFOV interior OMS will continue to support even the most challenging Euro NCAP DMS and semi-automated driving requirements which are traditionally achieved today with a narrow view (driver exclusive) camera system, while at the same time extending safety, comfort, and convenience feature to passengers. OMS capabilities range from enabling more reliable and cost-effective passive safety systems to fully AI enabled interiors able to anticipate and care for the needs of both the driver and passenger(s).

Further, the approach, enabled by Seeing Machines’s Occula® Neural Processing Unit (NPU) technology, allows a DMS to be expanded into an WFOV Interior camera system offering an array of additional high value interior and occupant sensing features with little increase in camera, illumination, or embedded processing cost. This can be achieved with readily available and proven automotive image sensors and other components, greatly enhancing the value of the Company’s existing product offering which remains consistent with the previously announced «three pillars» delivery options. This includes:

  1. A market-leading Xilinx FPGA based FOVIO Chip incorporating Occula® NPU acceleration for the lowest cost, fastest time to market, standalone DMS/OMS system processing solution, targeting smart camera integration into a range of suitable locations including instrument panels and rear-view mirrors
  2. Accelerated and non-accelerated Software Libraries (e-DME) which support a wide array of processing platforms, and integration sites including Infotainment Systems and ADAS domain modules, including the previously announced Qualcomm SnapDragon solution.
  3. Occula® NPU ASIC licensing to automotive system on Chip (SOC) suppliers desiring to embed a uniquely optimized acceleration solution for achieving uncompromised human and object detection and tracking performance for camera-based DMS and interior/occupant monitoring systems at the lowest possible cost of processing.

Demonstrations of Seeing Machines combined Driver and Interior/Occupant monitoring technology are presently available consistent with potential 2023 model introductions.

The festival, founded in 2006, was co-hosted by local government and the Chinese club platform Fblife.com. As an annual large-scale off-road vehicle-themed desert culture event, it has become one of the most eye-catching off-road vehicle festivals in China.

Highlights of the festival include Team-3 (T3) series competition, all-terrain vehicle grand prix, rock climbing race, Mongolian wrestling championship, electronic music event, helicopter tour, carnival event and drone show.

The Team-3 series competition, which features the collaboration of three vehicles as a team and values the sports spirit of taking challenges, is one of the most important events of the festival and has delighted the audience with excitement.

The players gave a full display of their wonderful driving skills, including climbing, diving, drifting and sprinting, to demonstrate «speed and passion» in the desert.

One of the most crucial materials is Nickel, an essential part of the cathode in the Li-ion batteries enabling electrification. Most automakers utilize Nickel-based batteries for their balance of energy and power density; for example BMW, Hyundai and Renault use variants of the Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC) chemistry, while Tesla uses a Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminium Oxide (NCA) chemistry. China also now favors NMC chemistries, having phased out Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) chemistries which is its subsidy program.

In 2019, more than 95% of new electric passenger cars sold used a variant of either NMC or NCA, as detailed in the new IDTechEx report «Materials for Electric Vehicles 2020-2030«. Demand for Nickel is further amplified by the trend towards higher Nickel content in cells, as manufacturers switch to chemistries like NMC 622 or 811 over the previous 111 and 523, to improve energy density further and reduce dependence on Cobalt.

Nickel is the most expensive material in electric vehicle batteries after Cobalt and is also one of the most highly used outside of the battery industry. While Nickel is often not discussed as much as Cobalt or Lithium, sustainable and environmentally conscious supply is becoming more of an issue.

In 2017, the Philippines government suspended nearly half of its Nickel mines, citing environmental concerns. Moreover, Indonesia accounts for the largest supply of Nickel and in 2019 the country banned exports of raw Nickel ore to boost their domestic processing industry. Indonesia also has the most planned developments for increasing Nickel production and is set to dominate the supply chain.

One of the issues is Nickel is typically mined from ores that contain only a very small percentage of useful Nickel, resulting in a large amount of waste material. Recently it has been announced that two Nickel mining companies in Indonesia are planning to use deep-sea disposal for the raw material waste into the Coral Triangle as they ramp up operations. Less than 20 Nickel mines worldwide use deep-sea disposal, but these new facilities would account for millions of tonnes of waste material each year. This method is typically used because it is cheaper than the alternatives of dam storage or converting the raw materials to useful products.

Many automakers are aware of the environmental concerns in Nickel supply and that it can undermine the environmentally friendly message of the electric vehicle. Most, including the likes of PSA, VW and Tesla, have pledged to reduce the environmental impact of their batteries. This becomes challenging as the choice of suppliers that can meet the demands of these large automotive companies are limited. In the future, Nickel producers will have to prove that their practices are environmentally friendly if they want to sell into the European and American markets, where the automotive industry is making this a priority. Elon Musk has been quoted as saying that Tesla would give a «giant contract» to any companies that could mine Nickel «efficiently and in an environmentally sensitive way» (Financial Times).
