STOCKHOLM, Jan. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Arriver™ today presents the capabilities of its next generation software stack for Advanced Driver Assistance and (ADAS) and semi-autonomous driving. The presentation by Arriver’s Head of Technology, Salah Hadi at Qualcomm’s annual Automotive Summit outlines how Arriver™ will provide a leading software stack enabling Level 1 ADAS to Level 3 semi-autonomous driving in 2024.

Arriver is developing this next generation software stack to be an open, flexible and scalable solution which will allow automotive manufacturers and automotive suppliers to, based on a robust software platform, tailor and customize solutions to their specific needs based on their individual product development strategies.

The software stack consists of a fifth-generation perception stack which is built on almost two decades of development of vision-based perception. The fifth generation will provide high resolution, using 8-megapixel cameras, allowing for higher framerates and provide a wider field of view of 120 degrees, compared to today’s solutions.

The Arriver stack will provide full NCAP ratings and include features like Automatic Cruise Control, Pilot Assist, Glare Free High Beam, Lane Keep Assist, and Traffic Jam Assist supported by state of the art deep learning based detection functions like full 3D vehicle detection, pedestrians, bicycles, motor cycles as well as traffic signs, traffic lights. On top of that it will enable innovative solutions for determining drive free space and challenging police restricted and road work scenarios.

The development uses the next generation of Arrivers Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which is up to 100 time more powerful than the current generation and will allow for the higher accuracy necessary for Level 3 applications and beyond, when the car takes over responsibility for the driver.

The Arriver software will include up-to-date fusion capabilities, catering for simultaneous input from a number of different sensor types beyond vision, including radar, lidar, driver monitoring, thermal sensing, and ultrasonic sensor for short range (parking) application.

Arriver‘s second generation drive policy; which will drive the vehicles decision making and actuation of the cars movement; will be developed and offered as part of the full software solution.

The drive policy stack will further allow for up to 12 cameras, creating a high resolution, real time image of the environment around the vehicle. This capability will pave the way for fully autonomous driving in most scenarios and be Level 3 and higher capable from its introduction in production vehicles by 2024.

Using the latest artificial intelligence and deep learning techniques both the perception and drive policy software will be able to support active learning, allowing for improved functionality over time with limited need for human interaction. In addition, Arriver is using advanced annotation concepts like non-causal stereo vision for automatic ground truth generation, leveraging the strong stereo vision knowledge and extensive data base. Non-causal stereo is moving detailed stereo information from future frames to the current frame, generating accurate ground truth for training and validation.

As its main System on a Chip (SoC) hardware platform Arriver will use the Qualcomm® Snapdragon Ride™  platform expanded to support all tiers from L1 to L3 and above systems,  which will bring industry leading performance and power management and a range of options allowing for a scalable system suitable for mass market cars as well as pushing the envelope for what is possible  in the high-end premium vehicle market.

In summary, Arriver software will be scalable and flexible, delivering industry leading performance in a new way not available in the market today. The software is going to be available to all auto manufacturers and Tier1 suppliers, and this will allow car manufacturers to create fantastic driving experience tailored to their own specific needs.

The Technology Deep Dive will be presented by Salah Hadi at Qualcomm’s automotive day on January 27, 2021.

Worldwide Electronic Power Steering Industry to 2027 – Growing Trends of Electrification of Vehicles Presents Opportunities

DUBLIN, Jan. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The «Electronic Power Steering Market Forecast to 2027 – COVID-19 Impact and Global Analysis By Type; Application, Passenger Cars, Heavy Commercial Vehicles» report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.

Research and Markets Logo

According to this report the global electronic power steering market was valued at US$ 52,692.31 million in 2019 and is projected to reach US$ 54,933.16 million by 2027; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.63% from 2020 to 2027.

There is an increase in adoption of buses and trucks across the world, specifically for logistics and public transportation purposes. In Asia, Oceania, and Europe, populations rely more on public transportation, whereas in North America, transportation is mainly through private vehicles. Growing population in urban areas is propelling the need of expansion of public transportation, with insufficiency of existing transportation infrastructure. The OEMs worldwide are now focusing on reducing the global carbon footprint, thus boosting the use of electric vehicles. With the growing mobility on demand, the manufacturers and users of passenger cars and taxis are focusing on the deployment of greener technologies.

The manufacturers are majorly focusing on vehicle electrification, specifically in the passenger cars segment. In May 2019, the Ministry of Transport and various other ministries in China mutually issued the Green Travel Action Plan for 2019-2022 that would promote the use of green vehicles. Further, the country would continue to enhance public transportation facilities and information systems supporting green transportation. The governments across different countries are taking several initiatives to boost the adoption of electric vehicles – such as e-trucks and e-buses – in their public transportation to reduce CO2 emissions; they are offering tax rebates and incentives for this purpose. A few of the electric vehicle models include BYD K9, Mercedes Benz electric truck, and Tata Starbus Hybrid e-buses. Recently, a few of the commercial vehicle manufacturers introduced electric buses to the automotive market, while several OEMs announced the plans for converting full-size trucks or pickup trucks into battery EV platforms. These factors are expected to create huge opportunities for the implementation of new technologies such as EPS in the world.

Asia Pacific held the largest share of the electronic power steering market in 2019, followed by Europe and North America. Further, the market in Asia Pacific is projected to witness the highest CAGR during the forecast period. The electronic power steering market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and geography. Based on type, the market is segmented into column-assisted electronic power steering (C-EPS), pinion-assisted electronic power steering (P-EPS), rack-assisted power steering system (R-EPS), and electronic hydraulic power steering (EHPS). The C-EPS segment accounted for the largest share of the overall market during the forecast period from 2020 to 2027. On the basis of application, the electronic power steering market is further segmented into light commercial vehicles (LCV), passenger cars, and heavy commercial vehicles (HCV). In 2019, the passenger cars segment accounted for a substantial share in the market.

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Electronic Power Steering (EPS) Market

The emergence and rapid spread of COVID-19 has paralyzed numerous developed and developing countries. The continuous surge in count of infected patients is threatening several industries across the globe. As of December 2020, the US, India, Brazil, Russia, and France are a few of the worst-affected countries in terms confirmed cases and reported deaths. According to the latest WHO figures, the global count of confirmed cases has reached 22,071,625, while the death count has reach 1,773,719. The coronavirus outbreak has been affecting economies and industries in various countries due to lockdowns, travel bans, and business shutdowns. Since majority of the countries are exercising lockdowns, the demand for electronic power steering is decreasing at a prominent rate. This is due to the fact that, the key electronic power steering purchasing countries have been restricting their investment on these components, and are utilizing a fair percentage of their budget to combat COVID-19. The temporary shutdown of manufacturing facilities is also hampering the electronic power steering market.

Hyundai Mobis, JTEKT Corporation, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Nexteer Automotive, NSK Ltd., Robert Bosch GmbH, Showa Corporation, The Mando Corporation, ThyssenKrupp AG, and ZF Friedrichshafen AG are among the major companies operating in the electronic power steering market.

Minnesota Grandmother Finds Calling, Keeps Streets Safe Accumulating 160,000 Miles In A Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

FRANKLIN, Tenn., Jan. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Every night around 9 p.m., Terry Krech sets out in her Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV to deliver an essential service to Twin Cities-area residents, and returns home around 3 a.m. She gives them a sober, safe and comfortable ride, a sounding board if they want to talk or a smooth jazz soundtrack if they do not, and keeps the streets safe for another night. If you ask her, she has found her calling in life – her dream job. If you ask her partner, children and grandchildren, she is a hero. If you ask her passengers, well, she maintains a five-star rating, so she must be doing something right.

In two short years, Terry racked up 160,000 miles in her 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, driving between 150-250 miles each day, averaging 35 MPG, and providing more than 10,000 rides. During that time, she says her Outlander PHEV only required standard maintenance and the addition of snow tires. As if chauffeuring Minnesota’s stranded and impaired after midnight wasn’t challenging enough, she loves driving her PHEV in the snow and using the PHEV’s signature regenerative braking system to recharge the battery and maximize range.

Given that Terry’s Outlander PHEV has an all-electric range of 22 miles, and the vehicle automatically switches to gasoline power when necessary, her trusted Outlander made those 160,000 miles as easy and efficient as possible. The vehicle chooses the most efficient mode of operation – electric, gasoline, or a combination of both – to ensure that driving is seamless, reliable and fun.

Why stop at 160,000 miles? She recently traded in her PHEV for a newer model, a 2019  PHEV, at White Bear Mitsubishi in White Bear, Minnesota. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) talked with Terry to learn about her PHEV experience. She took our phone call from the PHEV, parked in the garage, so she could escape the hustle, bustle and noise of family life inside her home.

Thank you for keeping us safe, Terry, and for making grandmothers and grandchildren everywhere – and us! – proud.

MMNA: You say you have found your calling. Tell us about that.
Terry: I like to think that I have a purpose in my life and that is to help people get home safely. I mainly drive between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., because that’s when people need rides the most. I will say that it requires patience – and a sense of humor – but I have both! I worked as closing-shift manager for a drive-through, fast-food restaurant for almost 20 years. Been there, done that… had a few sandwiches thrown in my face!

MMNA: What is your most memorable experience in the PHEV?
Terry: Once, right around 5,500 rides, I picked up a group of guys in their mid-twenties, who were out having a good time. I like to listen to a local jazz station while driving. I find it relaxes people who are just coming out of a loud bar and may have been over-served.  Anyway, one of them asked me to turn it up. Turns out, he had never listened to jazz music, and man, did it blow his mind. I said, «what do you mean? It’s jazz, man!» For the full 12-minute ride, we listened and laughed and had a great time. Best ride ever.

MMNA: You don’t consider yourself to be tech-savvy. You don’t even own a laptop. What drew you to an electric vehicle?
Terry: This is my full-time job, so fuel economy and efficiency are important to me. I typically get 35 MPG, often 38-40 MPG. I track everything in my notebook – expenses, dates, times, distances. I can switch back and forth between eco mode, battery-save mode, and battery-charge mode using the regenerative braking system, just by clicking buttons. That makes it easy (and fun) to operate, even for me. Reliability is also important to me, and electric motors tend to last a long time.

MMNA: And why the Mitsubishi PHEV specifically?
Terry: I feel incredibly safe in the vehicle, especially in the snow. It is solid and incredibly responsive, and I’ve never driven anything that felt so stable on a slippery on- or off-ramp in the winter. It’s comfortable for me and for my guests. I regularly get compliments about the car from my riders.

MMNA: You mentioned reliability, but you only had your PHEV for two years. What prompted the trade-in?
Terry: I think my first PHEV could have made it to 600,000 miles! But the guys at White Bear Mitsubishi – shout out to Dave K.! – gave me the chance to get into a new model at almost the same payment, so I took him up on the offer. I picked up my 2019 on my birthday. They gave me a cake and sang and everything!

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the world’s best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle. On sale early this year, the 2021 model will see major revisions, highlighted by a completely new powertrain, and a host of updates to each trim level. The updated internal combustion engine has increased displacement and greater horsepower, and the larger and more refined electric drive system offers greater all-electric range and speed of operation.

Mitchell Expands Claims Automation Capabilities through Open Platform and Collaboration with Tractable

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Mitchell, a leading provider of technology, connectivity and information solutions to the Property & Casualty (P&C) claims and <a target="_blank"…

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Mitchell, a leading provider of technology, connectivity and information solutions to the Property & Casualty (P&C) claims and Collision Repair industries, today announced the addition of Tractable’s AI to the Mitchell Intelligent Open Platform (MIOP). This allows North American automotive insurers to use Mitchell’s advanced claims automation solution—Mitchell Intelligent Estimating—with Tractable AI.

With this plug-and-play approach, insurers have the flexibility to incorporate the AI technology that meets their unique workflow requirements.

«We’re excited to combine our solutions to accelerate accident recovery,» said Alex Dalyac, co-founder and CEO of Tractable. «Mitchell’s collision repair data and industry expertise are known to be a reference in North America, as are their affiliate’s GT Motive in Europe. Insurers now have access to a solution that is best of breed on both AI and repair estimatics. This collaboration brings a new alternative to the industry.»

The sector’s first claims automation solution with a flexible, end-to-end framework, Mitchell Intelligent Estimating leverages the MIOP platform of AI computer vision providers, cloud-based technology and Mitchell’s intellectual property and data to produce a partial or complete estimate. Photos of damaged vehicles are captured and processed, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and configuration are determined, and the estimate is populated with part- and operation-specific line items before the appraiser begins work. This expedites the claims process and helps both insurance carriers and collision repairers deliver better outcomes for their customers.

«MIOP is a critical component of Mitchell Intelligent Estimating and our open and flexible approach to claims automation,» explained Olivier Baudoux, senior vice president of global product strategy and artificial intelligence at Mitchell. «By collaborating with Tractable and incorporating their best-in-class AI engine into Mitchell Intelligent Estimating, we can provide customers and the industry with an advanced, turnkey solution.»

ATLANTA, Jan. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Honeywell (NYSE: HON) is providing two airlines with Honeywell Forge software to help increase operational efficiencies and decrease costs associated with several factors, including unnecessary fuel burn. Fleets from GOL Airlines of Brazil and Sky Regional Airlines of Canada have joined a growing list of more than 10,000 aircraft worldwide harnessing the power of Honeywell Forge, with more than 3,000 using the Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency module to make their airline more profitable.

GOL Airlines, the largest domestic airline in Brazil, has begun using the software for its fleet of 138 Boeing 737s. «We are committed to running the most efficient operations possible by utilizing the latest technology,» said Conrado Burgarelli, fuel efficiency engineer, GOL Airlines. «With Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency, we’ll get a more accurate and timelier picture of where we are with our fuel-saving initiatives and ideas for new ways to improve flight efficiency.»

Sky Regional Airlines, a Canadian airline operating under the Air Canada Express banner, has implemented the software across its fleet of 25 Embraer E175 aircraft. Using Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency across this uniform fleet of aircraft, the airline generates consistently reliable data it can use to create the most efficient routes possible.

«By using connectivity to help analyze and track aircraft while they are in route, pilots can better adjust flight plans for greater efficiency, and operators now have more data at their disposal to make smart decisions,» said John Peterson, vice president and general manager, Software and Services at Honeywell Connected Enterprise, Aerospace. «The results are enhanced safety, better operations and improved operating results.»

Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency analyzes and simplifies streams of disparate data from a wide variety of sources, making it easier for operators to develop, implement and measure initiatives that help reduce costs. Some of the ways the platform helps operators and pilots streamline to achieve increased efficiency and savings include:

  • Efficient flight paths: Pilots can view historical flight trajectories from an airline to request better routes in real time, even when in the air. Airlines can also home in on opportunities for savings by evaluating the use of procedures like acceleration altitude reduction and continuous descent operations at airports where they are applicable. Climb and descent phases typically use high amounts of fuel.
  • Historical information on airports: The service allows pilots to visualize approaches into and out of an airport and typical holding patterns, which is especially useful when flying into unfamiliar locations. It also allows pilots to make decisions on standard fuel-savings initiatives, such as using a single engine to taxi out to the runway.
  • Adjusting for changing variables: Airlines create flight plans based on wind and temperature information that can change from the time the plan is made to the time it is executed. Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency’s vertical optimization tool allows pilots and operators to adjust the altitude of the flight plan based on current information, which saves fuel.

Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency is one component of Honeywell Forge, which includes in-air and on-ground solutions for flight operations, flight efficiency, and connected maintenance in a single user interface. By providing alerts and identifying savings opportunities, the solution can help airlines maximize their profits while improving workflows between pilots, ground maintenance and operations to increase productivity.

Honeywell Forge software solutions serve the aircraft, building, industrial, worker and cybersecurity segments.
