Molex Unveils Major Sensor Innovations in Automotive Active Noise Cancellation to Improve Safety and Driving Experiences

LISLE, Ill., Jan. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire/ —

LISLE, Ill., Jan. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire/ —

  • First road-noise cancelling product in new sensor family enters production
  • Performance validated for reductions in noise, weight and cost
  • Fewer design cycles and flexible sensor placement simplifies engineering
  • Molex teams with Analog Devices and Silentium to advance automotive ecosystem
Transition to electrified vehicles increases need to reduce road noise, driver fatigue and «highway hypnosis»

Molex, a leading global connectivity and electronics solutions provider, introduced an accelerometer-based Road Noise Cancelling (RNC) sensor, the first product in a new family of automotive Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) sensors. These sensors will play a critical role in combatting unwanted road, wind and HVAC car noise while reducing low-frequency sounds that increase driver fatigue.

Advancements in the electronics industry have enabled ANC technology, more commonly associated with high-end headphones, to transform how car manufacturers address road-based noises. Instead of installing expensive and heavy sound-absorbing materials to insulate car interiors from excessive road noise, ANC sensors are designed to be installed on a car’s chassis for more accurate and efficient results. Devices mounted to wheel wells and car frames, however, must be built to withstand the harshest conditions.

«As the transition to electrified vehicles intensifies, it will become critical to reduce road noise, which today is masked by internal combustion engines,» said Carrieanne Piccard, VP and General Manager, Transportation Solutions Business Unit, Molex. «Our long history in the automotive industry uniquely positions Molex to develop powerful, durable sensor technology that captures and cancels road noises while enabling safe and enjoyable driving experiences.»

According to Molex’s recently commissioned «The Future of Automotive Survey,» nine in 10 new cars in 2030 will be hybrid or fully electric. In fact, respondents ranked electrification, connectivity and sensor technology among the most important innovations. They also cited the need for electronics and software to operate in extreme scenarios as a barrier to innovation.

Superior Performance in Harsh Conditions

Molex’s family of ANC accelerometer and microphone sensors use Analog Devices’ Automotive Audio Bus® (A2B) technology to ensure delivery of high-fidelity audio while significantly reducing cabling complexity, costs and weight. By pairing its sensors with the A2B network, Molex transmits noise signals to the processing unit in less than two milliseconds. The sensors include integral connectors and are daisy chained to simplify integration while providing up to a 30% reduction in cable weight. Derived from Molex’s Mini50 Connector family, these connectors offer up to 50% space savings over traditional USCAR 0.64 connectors.

Moreover, Molex’s sensors are available in different housings, including an IP6K9K enclosure, to ensure greater protection from harsh conditions while enabling placement closest to the road noise. Detecting the sound at its source speeds processing of the noise-canceling signal; A2B technology also allows a higher number of signals per chain to be processed. Unlike other products on the market, Molex sensors are sensitive enough to measure and cancel road noise at slower vehicle speeds, giving designers greater flexibility in sensor placement while simplifying engineering.

«Analog Devices is pleased to collaborate with Molex to bring to market low-latency ANC / RNC sensors based on Analog Devices’ A2B network and MEMs accelerometer technologies,» said Vlad Bulavsky, Senior Director, Automotive Connectivity, Analog Devices, Inc. «We are already seeing early signs that the quality of Molex’s sensors together with A2B/ADXL317’s design simplicity is resonating with our mutual customer base.»

Safer, Optimized Driving Experiences

Molex also has tested and validated the use of its RNC sensor with Silentium’s «Active Acoustics» software, which removes up to 90% of unwanted noises across a broad band of frequencies (from 20Hz to 1kHz) to improve driver and occupant comfort, safety and wellbeing. In particular, the elimination of frequent humming or droning noises coming from roads and tires is critical to decreasing «highway hypnosis» and driver fatigue.

«Working with Molex accelerates our ability to usher in a new era of safer, more enjoyable driving experiences,» said Yoel Naor, CEO of Silentium. «Seamless integration of Molex’s sensors with our software also reduces automotive design cycles and engineering costs.» Silentium’s noise cancelling technology is being adopted by leading automotive suppliers and OEMs. Jaguar and Land Rover announced deployment of Silentium’s technology in October 2020.

CARFAX: You Must Still Maintain Your Car, Even If You’re Driving Less

In fact, CARFAX data shows people are driving an average of almost 2,000 miles less a year than they normally would in the time since COVID travel restrictions were enacted. CENTREVILLE, Va., Jan. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Because millions of Americans are staying home more often during the pandemic, their cars may be spending less time on the road. In fact, CARFAX data shows people are driving an average of almost 2,000 miles less a year than they normally would in the time since COVID travel restrictions were enacted. Driving less doesn’t mean a vehicle no longer needs maintenance, though: Even if the odometer isn’t moving much, the clock is still ticking on a car’s maintenance schedule.

«Automakers base their recommended service intervals on time or mileage, whichever comes first,» said Paul Nadjarian, General Manager of CARFAX Car Care. «Even though you might not be racking up any mileage, it’s smart to keep the time limits in mind. A well-maintained vehicle will last longer, cause you fewer issues down the road, and is worth more when it comes time to sell or trade it in.»

The best practice is to drive a car at least once a week for several miles to get all the fluids flowing and to allow the engine, transmission, and brakes to get the kind of regular use that will keep them working properly.

These are important tasks that should be performed regardless of how many miles are driven each year:

  • Oil changes: Change the oil at least once a year, even if it’s synthetic oil that the manufacturer says is good for 10,000 miles. Look at the maintenance schedule; it will probably say «or once a year.» Oil deteriorates over time from oxidation, heat and moisture. It can’t lubricate and protect an engine as well as fresh oil.
  • Tire rotation: It’s a good idea to have the tires rotated at the same time you get your oil changed. It may seem like overkill if you’re only driving 4,000 miles per year, but most vehicles today have front-wheel drive. That means a higher percentage of the car’s weight is resting on the front tires than on an all-wheel drive vehicle, and if a car is sitting, that can cause flat spots on the front tires.
  • Tire air pressure: Tires gradually lose pressure over time. Check their levels at least once a month to insure they don’t develop flat spots. It’s important: Under-inflated tires have lower load-carrying capacity and wear faster.

CHICAGO, Jan. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Beginning February 1, United customers traveling to Hawaii who have a valid negative COVID-19 test can show their results before boarding to save time and skip document screening lines upon arrival. The new pre-clearance process will be in place for customers traveling on 110 of United’s weekly flights to Hawaii.

United is also making it easier to get the right tests to avoid Hawaii’s 14-day quarantine by making approved COVID-19 tests available to all customers traveling to the islands no matter where in the U.S. their travel begins.

«We’re making it easier for customers traveling to Hawaii to spend more time enjoying their trip and less time waiting in lines,» said Toby Enqvist, chief customer officer at United. «Testing is the key to opening domestic and international travel so we’ll continue to lead the way in rolling out solutions that are simple and safe so our customers have what they need when they take their next trip with us.»

To begin the pre-clearance program, customers will enroll in Hawaii’s Safe Travels program and complete Hawaii’s COVID-19 questionnaire within 24 hours from departure. Next, customers will use the Safe Travels website to upload their negative test results from one of Hawaii’s trusted testing partners which must be taken within 72 hours of their departure. At the airport, customers will see a United team member at the gate for their flight to Hawaii where they will receive a wristband if they qualify to bypass airport screening in Hawaii. Customers who have been pre-cleared will be able to skip test screenings in Hawaii and begin their trip as soon as they land.

For images of United’s pre-clearance program click here.

United is also making it easier for customers to obtain approved COVID-19 test options with the expansion of mail-in tests to customers no matter where in the U.S. their travel originates. The airline will notify customers in advance of their Hawaii trip to let them know what testing options they have locally. Last year, United also teamed up with XpresCheck to open additional same-day testing facilities for United customers in select airports. XpresCheck currently has locations open in United’s Denver terminal, and expects to open additional locations in United’s terminals in Houston and Newark in the coming weeks. Customers who choose to take a test with XpresCheck can schedule an appointment online for a rapid molecular test on the same day as their travel. Walk up appointments are also available on a first come, first served basis.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, United made numerous enhancements to its business that improve the travel experience and make the airline a better company. Earlier this week, United announced a new Travel-Ready Center in the United app and online where customers can review COVID-19 travel requirements, find local testing options and upload any testing and vaccination records that their destinations requires. This year, United also began allowing all customers to fly standby on another flight to the same destination on the same day for free, and all MileagePlus® Premier® members now confirm a new flight on the same day to the same destinations at check-in when space is available in the same fare class. Last year, the carrier eliminated most change fees, pledged to reduce its greenhouse gases 100% by 2050, and as a part of its United CleanPlus℠ program, teamed up with Clorox and the Cleveland Clinic to guide its cleaning and safety protocols. Last spring, United extended MileagePlus Premier status to all customers through January 2022 and made earning status for the next two years easier for all MileagePlus members.

The comprehensive, transparent GEI scoring methodology allows investors to assess company performance and compare across industry peer groups.

The reference index measures gender equality across five pillars: female leadership and talent pipeline, equal pay and gender pay parity, inclusive culture, sexual harassment policies, and pro-women brand.

Through disclosure of gender-related metrics using the GEI framework, the firms included in the 2021 GEI have committed to provide a comprehensive look at their investment in workplace gender equality and the communities in which they operate, raising the bar of what should be expected from other companies within the same industry.
