WILMINGTON, N.C. and WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C., Oct. 13, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Thanksgiving week, known as flotilla week in Wrightsville Beach, will launch the coastal Carolina holiday season with two long-running traditions, the 38th North Carolina Holiday Flotilla and Airlie Gardens’ 16th annual Enchanted Airlie.

Organizers of both events revised their programs to mitigate public safety concerns surrounding COVID-19. «It’s important for us to do whatever we can to keep these North Carolina holiday traditions in place,» said Bill Baggett, co-owner of Blockade Runner Beach Resort and a founding supporter of the Flotilla.

«The Flotilla is happening with a little twist this year,» said Linda Brown, Committee Chair. «Instead of a boat-judging contest with 50,000 people on the shoreline, it’s going to be a dock judging competition from the water. We encourage all residents and businesses on the Flotilla route to decorate their docks with seasonal lighting. However, floodlights and spotlights will impair navigation on the waterways and are not permitted.

«The judges, instead of scoring a parade of boats from home-base Blockade Runner, will be on the Carolina Runner, judging the docks and homes on the parade route. There will be two nights of judging, Friday and Saturday nights, Thanksgiving weekend. Winners will be announced on Sunday with prizes for the top docks.

«We invite our flotilla captains and all owners to decorate their boats and come and see the beautiful docks and homes from the water. See the holiday lights and place your votes for the People’s Choice Award,» said Brown.

«We’ll absolutely light up our two docks and the boats that are on them,» said Baggett. «Our new tour boat, The Carolina Runner, has plenty of space for social distancing. We plan to take people to view the homes and docks on the parade route throughout the holiday season.»

Airlie Gardens’ Enchanted Airlie also begins Thanksgiving weekend, bringing to life 35-acres of night-time forest with more than one million sparkling lights, walking trails, holiday displays, and seasonal music.

«Enchanted Airlie is a beloved tradition and we have worked hard to ensure that we continue that tradition in the safest way possible,» said Janine Powell, Director of Donor Relations. «Tickets will sell out in advance.»

Enchanted Airlie tickets are available online only, beginning Oct. 29 for the public. The garden gates open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 27-29, and reopen each night, Dec. 4-22. This year there are four one-hour event times each evening – 5:30, 6:30, 7:30, and 8:30 PM. Blockade Runner will offer Enchanted Airlie packages for hotel guests.

Adapting to public safety needs, Santa will not be on site this year, and face coverings will be required, according to Powell. No food or drinks will be sold at Airlie Gardens, but guests may bring their own. Airlie’s gift shop will only accept credit cards. Pathways are wheelchair accessible, and guests may bring their own. Wheelchairs will not be available onsite.

Proceeds from Enchanted Airlie benefit the preservation and improvement of New Hanover County’s historic Airlie Gardens.

Comscore Finds Indications of Automotive Industry Rebound as Shoppers Adapt During the COVID-19 Pandemic

RESTON, Va., Oct. 13, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, consumer vehicle shopping habits have shifted. RESTON, Va., Oct. 13, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, consumer vehicle shopping habits have shifted. While online new vehicle shopper interest has rebounded from  its lowest point during the pandemic, new vehicle sales have been slower to recover. That’s according to the latest research from Comscore (Nasdaq: SCOR), a trusted partner for planning, transacting and evaluating media across platforms, which found that there are signs of steady, but cautious, renewed consumer interest in new vehicles.

Heavy incentives from dealers appear to have helped coax some buyers back to the table – in August 2020, there were over 1.3 million new vehicle sales, up from about 710,000 such sales in April 2020, according to information from Wards Automotive.

Looking at Carvana, an online used car marketplace, shows that interest in the used car market has ballooned since the start of the pandemic. In August 2020, Carvana saw 58% more visitors to its site than a year prior, and there has been a sustained lift from the March/April lows, mirroring the trend in the new market. As with new vehicle shopping, use of Carvana’s «Car Finder» tool has skyrocketed, with August 2020 showing a 276% year-over-year increase in users. What’s more, the share of new vehicle shoppers now also shopping Carvana increased this summer to around 15%–16% of the market, above the 10% or so overlap seen last year – another indicator that consumers are spending more time searching for the right vehicle.

Though consumers may be more wary and particular given the times, there’s still evidence that shoppers will strike out for compelling models. While overall industry sales are down year-over-year, several top-shopped models have already met or exceeded their highest sales tallies for the year in August 2020, such as the Honda CR-V, Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Consistent with shoppers expanding the scope of their search, in August 2020, Jeep and Ram visitors drove DriveFCA.com, Fiat Chrysler’s online retail experience site, to its highest visitation since its launching in April 2020. Also in August, about 55% of DriveFCA’s traffic was referred from a Fiat Chrysler-associated page (Brand.com, Chrysler Capital, dealer site, etc.), 34% came from Jeep.com and 9% came from Ramtrucks.com. Another 16% of overall referrals came from lead generation sources – the largest of which only started referring in July and August of this year, immediately boosting visitation and contributing 12-13% of DriveFCA’s visits each month. An additional 7% of referrals came from search, while just 2% came from third-party auto research sites.

Another example of the pent-up excitement for compelling models is the visitor boom shop.ford.com saw when the new Bronco and Bronco Sport were announced in July 2020. Ford saw a 79% year-over-year boost in visitation to its shopper site, largely from shoppers exploring the «Build & Price» tool for Bronco. August 2020 traffic remained elevated, with the shopper site up 17%, and inventory pages up 43%, from August 2019.

«Automakers have thus far done a decent job responding to the challenges of the pandemic —supporting and incentivizing consumers, implementing new safety protocols to get plants reopened, and working with dealers to launch novel shopping experiences both online and in person,» said Dennis Bulgarelli, Vice President, Commercial, Comscore. «In order for auto makers to continue to reach buyers, it remains critical for them to adapt to the changing consumer behavior during the pandemic.»

Research on how to keep feeding the planet while preserving wildlife rewarded with the Volvo Environment Prize 2020

GÖTEBORG, Sweden, Oct. 13, 2020 /PRNewswire/ —  The world is losing species at an alarming rate. The forests and wild areas of the Earth are rapidly transformed into farmlands, pushing wildlife into steep decline. A way to reverse this catastrophic trend is to change the working lands – agriculture, forestry, and ranches – to more diverse landscapes to preserve biodiversity. Conservation biologist Professor Claire Kremen is this year’s laureate of the Volvo Environment Prize for her world-class research on how humanity can feed itself while protecting biodiversity.

National parks and reserves have been the cornerstone of traditional nature conservation, such as the Serengeti or Kruger Park in Africa. Without these national parks, it would perhaps not be possible to see wild elephants or lions anymore. But only about 15 percent of the world’s surface is protected. The lands where humans are farming, doing forestry, and ranching make up around 60 -70 percent of terrestrial Earth’s surface. These lands are often managed in a way detrimental to wild plants, animals, and insects.

«With very large-scale agriculture, we are simplifying the landscapes a lot. It makes them much less hospitable for most species», says Claire Kremen, a professor in biodiversity, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

According to a recent report by the conservation group WWF, the wildlife population has fallen by more than two-thirds in less than 50 years. They recorded an average 68 percent fall in more than 20,000 species of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish since 1970.

Less known perhaps is the decline of insects. Claire Kremen is an expert on wild bees and says she’s concerned about insect declines.

«Insects are the little things that run the world,» says Kremen, quoting famous Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson.

«Insects are at the base of the food chain for many organisms. If we didn’t have pollinating insects, we’d be interfering with the reproduction of about 90 percent of plant species. And, 75 percent of the crops we humans eat benefit from insect pollinators’ visits. So, we really need these creatures. I f we don’t have them, we’re not going to have all the fruits and vegetables that are so important for our nutrition».

Reversing the trend is still possible, she says. A way to do it is by transforming the working lands to make them more diverse, by having different crops grow within the same field, planting hedgerows, and lining the fields with shrubs and trees. It would be a mixed landscape of many crops, pastures, and small areas of native vegetation and forest borders along streams.

Critics of this type of farming and the concept of agroecological landscapes say that they are much less productive, with smaller yields in a world where the human population is approaching 8 billion people.

«I would push back on that,» says Claire Kremen. «Some of our agriculture is producing food at a high cost. It produces a lot of greenhouse gases or produces nutrients that end up causing dead zones in the ocean. Sometimes the soils have been mined of their fertility, and they can’t be productive in the future».

«Diversified working lands, on the other hand, can be extremely productive. Farmers could promote natural pest control by harnessing the powers of nature, thus reducing the need for pesticides. We would preserve the ability to provide clean water, to store carbon in the soils, to provide habitat for biodiversity, even to provide beautiful landscapes that people enjoy.»

Says the jury of the Volvo Environment Prize Foundation:

«Professor Kremen’s work on diversified farming systems and conservation has helped us to understand how the increasingly globalized food system affects biodiversity, sustainability and equity, and – most importantly – how to significantly improve this system so that we can feed ourselves while protecting biodiversity and mitigating climate change.»

Claire Kremen is Professor, President’s Excellence Chair In Biodiversity at the University of British Columbia, Canada. She is an ecologist and applied conservation biologist working on reconciling agricultural land use with biodiversity conservation. More information here.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 13, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Designers of automotive chargers now have the industry’s smallest and lowest-cost solution with the MAX25430 100W USB Power Delivery (PD) buck-boost controller and protector from Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. (NASDAQ: MXIM). As the industry’s most integrated solution, the MAX25430 can reduce design size up to 40 percent compared to competitive solutions and offer the industry’s lowest cost for increasing the number of USB PD ports in vehicles.

Automotive multimedia hubs, including rear-seat entertainment modules and head units, are all expanding in capability as more USB PD chargers are integrated into passenger vehicle cabins. However, there are size, cost and power constraints – and the MAX25430 addresses all of these.

The MAX25430 integrates a USB Type C Port Controller (TCPC) power regulator, VCONN cable power supply, buck-boost and protection thereby eliminating heat-sink requirements and metal box enclosures to further slash design size by 40 percent compared to competitive multi-IC solutions. In addition, bill-of-materials (BOM) costs are also reduced by 25 percent compared to competitive solutions. The MAX25430 runs 20-degrees (Celsius) cooler at full power compared to competitive automotive USB PD solutions. It needs only one microcontroller (MCU) regardless of the number of ports, while competitors require additional MCUs per port.

For a complete solution, Maxim Integrated also offers the MAX25410 automotive USB PD port protector and the MAX25431 automotive 40V H-bridge buck-boost controller, meeting a wide array of USB charger design needs.

Key Advantages

  • Smallest Size: Integrates TCPC power regulator, VCONN power cable supply, buck-boost and protection to reduce solution size up to 40 percent

  • Power Performance: Robust performance in harsh automotive environments while running 20 degrees cooler than the closest competitor

Commentary

  • «Automakers are expanding the number of USB-C Power Delivery ports in cars,» said Richard Robinson, automotive director at Strategy Analytics. «With the market increasing nearly 10x between 2020 (5.7 million units) and 2027 (50 million units), Maxim Integrated is well positioned to take advantage of the significant increase in the in-cabin requirement for higher-power and faster data transfer on consumer devices.»
  • «Maxim Integrated had the needs of designers in mind when it comes to USB-C Power Delivery ports,» said Michael Mishko, director of business management for the Automotive Business Unit at Maxim Integrated. «The MAX25430 is ideal for small, high-efficiency, thermally-cool and flexible automotive-grade designs.»

Ansys Startup Program Gains Global Momentum with Triple-Digit Growth

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 13, 2020 /PRNewswire/ —

Firefly conducts acceptance testing.

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 13, 2020 /PRNewswire/ —

/ Key Highlights

  • More than 1000 startup companies from around the world are using Ansys simulation solutions to innovate next-generation products and processes

  • Ansys Startup Program participants utilize Ansys tools to reduce development costs, boost productivity, elevate efficiency and win the race to market

From 3D printing rockets to building electric motorcycles to reinventing how produce is grown, more than 1000 startup companies from around the world are employing Ansys (NASDAQ: ANSS) simulation solutions to design next-generation products and processes. Launched in 2016, the rapidly expanding Ansys Startup Program has doubled in size over the last two years, supporting startups from 44 countries across a range of industries including aerospace and defense, high tech, energy, automotive and many more.

Faced with limited funding and revenue, many startups must rely on building and testing physical prototypes to verify product performance, which often requires considerable financial and human resources. The physical prototyping process is also notoriously time-consuming, which increases barriers for winning the race to market against potential competitors. To overcome these challenges, entrepreneurs are using Ansys engineering simulation solutions to design and validate product performance with a minimum investment of time and cost.

The Ansys Startup Program equips the startup ecosystem with access to Ansys’ broad portfolio of simulation solutions, bundled and affordably priced to help early-stage entrepreneurs grow their businesses quickly while stretching their funding further. This enables engineers to validate product performance and reliability within virtual environments — significantly reducing physical prototype tests.

The Onward Project, a recent addition to the Ansys Startup Program, leverages Ansys® Discovery to optimize the design of AdvenChair, a first-of-its-kind, all-terrain, human-powered wheelchair that blends an adjustable sit-ski seat with mountain bike technology to help riders traverse challenging wilderness trails.

«We created the AdvenChair so that people with mobility issues can continue enjoying the great outdoors, beyond where the pavement ends,» said Geoff Babb, AdvenChairman of The Onward Project. «Upfront simulation is a necessity for us to make that vision a reality. We’re implementing Ansys Discovery into our design process to reduce weight, maintain structural integrity and ultimately cut costs, resulting in a better, more budget-friendly product.»

Firefly Aerospace joined the Ansys Startup Program in 2017, using a combination of Ansys solutions to design launch vehicles capable of taking small payloads to space. The company became a commercial Ansys customer in 2019 and still relies heavily on Ansys for everything from fluid dynamics to heat transfer to metallic propulsion hardware.

«At Firefly, our work is quite literally rocket science,» said Tom Markusic, CEO of Firefly Aerospace. «It takes an enormous amount of simulation and modeling to design components that withstand the tremendous liftoff, flight and space environments. Leveraging the suite of Ansys tools allows us to ensure a design works with limited test iterations, providing up to $5 million in cost savings in engine cooling design, $10 million in increasing engine thrust and up to $500,000 in mass optimizations.»

«Ansys views simulation as a superpower and, in many cases, startups are the true superheroes,» said Prith Banerjee, chief technology officer at Ansys. «The Ansys Startup Program champions the next era of startup companies, equipping them with cutting-edge, cost-effective simulation solutions to pioneer new products that push the envelope of what’s possible and quickly scale their businesses.»
