Ricoh launches new-concept series of multi-function binoculars/monoculars including the world’s first detachable design

PARSIPPANY, N.J., Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Ricoh Imaging Americas Corporation today announced the PENTAX V binocular/monocular series, a new line of products with unique, multi-function features designed to greatly enhance operability and usability for a wide range of applications. The first two models are the PENTAX VD 4X20 WP binoculars with a first-of-its-kind detachable design, and the PENTAX VM 6X21 WP monocular, designed to facilitate close-range observations.

Featuring durable, dependable waterproof construction**, both models in the new PENTAX V-Series are ideal for use at outdoor sports events, concerts and theatrical performances, and locations such as beaches and waterfalls, or in the rain.

The PENTAX VD 4X20 WP is the world’s first «three-in-one» binocular product*. As conventional binoculars, the PENTAX VD 4X20 WP delivers a solid, magnified view of the subject. However, the innovative design also allows the user to separate the two barrels and use them independently as two separate monoculars or combine the barrels inline into a single, high-power telescope with 16X magnification.

With a non-slip, rubber-coated exterior and seesaw-type focus adjustment, the PENTAX VM 6×21 WP monocular can be securely held and focused using just one hand, making it ideal for trekking or hiking. With a minimum focusing distance of approximately 27.5 inches and a wide focus adjustment range, this monocular can be used in applications ranging from magnified views of distant scenery to close-up observations of small objects.

Two optional accessories expand the capabilities of the PENTAX VM 6×21 WP monocular. An accessory stand, the Macro Stand V-MS1, allows the monocular to be used as a microscope capable of magnifying approximately 18X. A smartphone adapter accessory (Smartphone Adapter V-SA1) enables shooting and recording with a smartphone. Both accessories and the VM 6×21 WP monocular are available in the PENTAX VM 6×21 WP Discovery Kit.

Ricoh also announced the PENTAX UD 9X21 and PENTAX UD 10X21 roof-prism binoculars. Boasting the lightest weight and most compact design of any PENTAX binoculars, these highly portable models provide a higher magnification than most other compact binoculars currently on the market.

Despite their palm-sized bodies, these binoculars provide six to eight times greater magnification than similarly-sized models. The PENTAX UD 9X21 incorporates fully multi-coated optics — a series of lens coatings identical to those applied to higher-class models — to assure bright and clear viewing. The PENTAX UD 10X21 optics offer even higher power at 10X magnification, while retaining the same compact body size. With a choice of two magnifications, the PENTAX UD series assures comfortable viewing in a variety of applications, while excelling in cost performance.

The PENTAX UD 9X21 is available in five different body colors to accommodate user color preferences.

| Pricing and Availability |

The PENTAX V-Series and PENTAX UD binoculars will be available in September at www.us.ricoh-imaging.com as well as at select Ricoh Imaging-authorized retail outlets nationwide for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price between $79 and $249 depending on the model.

| Main Features of the new PENTAX VD 4X20 WP |

1. Detachable, three-in-one design

  • Binocular function: used as conventional binoculars to deliver a solid, magnified view of the subject at 4X magnification.
  • Monocular function: by disconnecting the two barrels, can used as two independent monoculars with 4X magnification. Unlike binoculars, which demand adjustment of pupillary distance and diopter for each user, these monoculars allow users to observe the subject with focus adjustment alone.
  • Telescope function: by connecting the two barrels inline, it functions as a 16X telescope.
    * As of July 12, 2020, based on RICOH IMAGING research.

2. Exceptional optical performance

All reflective surfaces of the optical elements and prisms have been fully multi-coated to prevent excessive reflection. By treating roof prisms with phase coating and auxiliary prisms with super-high-reflection dielectric, multi-layer coating, this model boosts improved transmissivity and delivers outstanding imaging performance with a bright, sharp, high-contrast view of the subject with minimal flare and ghost images.

3. Washable, waterproof body

Featuring weather-resistant construction* (equivalent to JIS Class 7; protected against immersion to one meter under the water), this model can be rinsed clean with water, and is usable under all weather conditions.
** Not usable in the water.

4. Others

  1. Exclusive neck strap, which double-functions as two independent hand straps for monoculars
  2. Helicoid eyepiece rings, with single-action storage operation
  3. Optional TP-3 tripod adapter (currently available) for installation on a tripod

| Main Features of the new PENTAX VM 6X21 WP |

1. Effortless, single-hand operation

Featuring a compact, palm-sized body, this model provides a non-slip, rubber-coated exterior to assure firm hold by either hand. Its seesaw-type focus adjustment mechanism assures easy focusing operation by the holding hand, allowing the user to observe a subject with one hand while trekking or hiking, or while carrying a bag with the other hand.

2. Bright, clear view

All reflective surfaces of the optical elements and prisms are fully multi-coated to prevent excessive reflection. Coupled with phase coating applied to the roof prism, this model boosts transmissivity and delivers outstanding imaging performance with a bright, sharp, high-contrast view of the subject with minimal flare and ghost images.

3. Dedicated accessories greatly expand its capabilities

Coupling this model with a smartphone using an optional Smartphone Adapter V-SA1* will allow the user to observe a spectacular, magnified view of the subject on the phone’s monitor and to capture images on it. Also, by mounting an optional Macro Stand V-MS1, it can be used as a microscope with approximately 18X magnification to observe an enlarged view of microscopic objects. When the object is dark due to the monocular shadow during observation, you can observe it while illuminating it with the built-in LED light. In addition, using it with the Smartphone Adapter V-SA1 can significantly expand the range of use of the main unit, including the ability to shoot and save super close-up images.
*Depending on your smartphone’s size and the position of the camera lens, you may not be able to attach it.

4. Washable, waterproof body

Featuring waterproof construction* (equivalent to JIS Class 7; protected against immersion to one meter under the water), this model can be rinsed clean with water, and is usable under all weather conditions.
* Not usable in the water.

5. Others

  1. Wide focus adjustment range (70cm to infinity), for close-range observation of nearby subjects
  2. Exclusive carrying case, with a belt loop on both sides to facilitate storage and removal from either side of user body
  3. Tripod receptacle, for easy installation of a tripod without an adapter

| Main Features of the new PENTAX UD |

1. Compact, lightweight design

The PENTAX UD series features a compact, palm-sized body and weighs approximately 195 grams (6.9 ounces)—the lightest of all existing PENTAX binoculars. Its compact, easy-to-hold body assures outstanding portability in a wide range of applications, from nature observation to the viewing of sports, concerts and theatrical performances.

2. Bright, clear viewing

Thanks to the incorporation of multi-coated optics designed to eliminate excessive reflection, the PENTAX UD series delivers a bright, clear view of the subject free of flare and ghost images. The PENTAX UD 9X21 features fully multi-coated optics — a multi-layer coating applied to all reflective lens surfaces — to assure an especially bright view of the subject.
(Note: The PENTAX UD 10X21 has a single multi-coated lens, while other lenses are treated with a single-layer coating.)

3. Other features

  • A minimum focusing distance of approximately three meters for a sharp view of close-range subjects
  • Nonslip diopter rings for easy, error-free diopter adjustment
  • Optional TP-3 tripod adapter (currently available) for installation on a tripod

NASA Astronauts to Discuss Historic SpaceX Crew Dragon Test Flight

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley will discuss their recently completed SpaceX Demo-2 test flight mission to the International Space Station during a news conference at 4:30 p.m. EDT Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The news conference from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston will be broadcast live on NASA Television and on the agency’s website.

This will be a virtual event with no media present, due to the safety restrictions related to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Reporters who wish to participate by telephone must call Johnson’s newsroom at 281-483-5111 to RSVP no later than 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. Those following the briefing on social media may ask questions using the hashtag #AskNASA.

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, carrying Behnken and Hurley, splashed down at 2:48 p.m. Sunday under parachutes in the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Pensacola, Florida, and was successfully recovered by SpaceX. After returning to shore, the astronauts immediately flew back to Houston, where they were greeted by their families and invited guests – including NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine and SpaceX Chief Engineer Elon Musk – at a welcome home ceremony.

NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 test flight launched May 30 from the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Nearly 19 hours later, Crew Dragon docked to the forward port of the International Space Station‘s Harmony module May 31.

Behnken and Hurley contributed more than 100 hours to scientific experiments and participated in numerous public engagement events during their 62 days aboard the station. Behnken conducted four spacewalks with Expedition 63 Commander and NASA colleague Chris Cassidy to upgrade two power channels on the station’s truss with new lithium-ion batteries. Overall, the astronaut duo spent 64 days in orbit, completed 1,024 orbits around Earth and traveled 27,147,284 miles.

This was SpaceX’s final test flight and will provide data about the performance of the Falcon 9 rocket, Crew Dragon spacecraft and ground systems, as well as in-orbit, docking, splashdown, and recovery operations. The data will inform NASA’s certification of the SpaceX crew transportation system for regular flights carrying astronauts to and from the space station. SpaceX is readying the hardware for the first rotational mission, which is scheduled to occur following NASA certification. NASA astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, Jr., and Shannon Walker, as well as Soichi Noguchi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), are assigned to the first operational flight of Crew Dragon and spend six months aboard the station.

NASA’s Commercial Crew Program works with the U.S. aerospace industry to develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective crew transportation systems that will carry astronauts on American rockets and spacecraft from American soil to the International Space Station, and back. A successful Commercial Crew Program could allow for additional research time and increase the opportunity for discovery aboard humanity’s testbed for exploration, including helping us prepare for human exploration of the Moon and Mars.

Georgia Power stands firm behind safe operations at Plant Scherer

ATLANTA, Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Georgia Power is standing firm behind its employees and the safe operations at Plant Scherer in Juliette, Georgia, following a lawsuit filed July 29. The company and its employees are longtime members of the community with Plant Scherer safely generating energy for neighbors, the local area and the state for nearly four decades. The company believes the lawsuit, similar to one that was voluntarily dismissed years ago, has no merit and will vigorously defend itself against the claims.

«We have been a part of the Juliette and Monroe County communities for decades, and we take our responsibility as a trusted neighbor very seriously,» said Dr. Mark Berry, vice president of Environmental & Natural Resources for Georgia Power. «Our employees and retirees also live and raise their families in the communities we serve, and if our operations were causing harm to residents, we would take every action necessary to resolve the situation.»

In 2013, Georgia Power faced similar litigation that the plaintiffs later withdrew after the court required them to provide expert evidence. The company is reviewing the current lawsuit and believes that, as in the earlier case, the claims are without merit.

Since Plant Scherer first opened, Georgia Power has incorporated strict environmental standards into operating the generating plant, which included the operation of its ash pond. With the closure of the pond underway, Georgia Power’s top priority has been to protect water quality every step of the way, which includes:

  • Groundwater quality: Georgia Power stands by the data delivered from the more than 100 groundwater monitoring wells at Plant Scherer, including the 57 directly around the ash pond and landfill. Based on the extensive data collected and reported to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD), nothing above a state or federal drinking water standard has been shown leaving the company’s property. This groundwater monitoring will continue long after the pond at Plant Scherer is closed.
  • Closure of the ash pond: The company’s ash pond closure plans, including the closure plan at Plant Scherer, fully comply with the federal Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) rule, as well as the more stringent requirements of Georgia’s state CCR rule. Federal and state rules specify two approved methods for closing ash ponds, closure in place and closure by removal, with the Environmental Protection Agency determining both options are safe and protective of the environment.
  • Monitoring wells: Third-party professional engineers and geologists direct the appropriate placement of monitoring wells for Georgia Power based on site-specific geology. The company has also engaged independent, third-party contractors for sampling and accredited independent laboratories for analysis of the wells installed at Plant Scherer. Georgia Power has installed approximately 500 groundwater monitoring wells across the state, including the more than 100 wells at Plant Scherer, going beyond federal and state requirements, to help ensure the company is being protective of lakes, rivers and drinking water. Monitoring is being conducted in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Fact-based, clear and transparent information: Georgia Power, along with the Plant Scherer co-owners, is and will remain committed to the open communication and transparency of Plant Scherer’s operations, ash pond closure plans and groundwater testing results. Georgia Power representatives have met personally with residents as well as state and local officials and have sent additional information directly to Juliette neighbors around Plant Scherer. Additional information can be found at www.GeorgiaPower.com/gwm.

Plant Scherer and the Community
The plant has safely generated energy, often 24 hours a day, for nearly four decades. The plant’s four units can produce nearly 3,720 megawatts of electricity and can supply enough reliable, affordable energy to power over two million homes annually.

The plant employs nearly 400 employees, many of whom live in Monroe County and across central Georgia. In addition, employee volunteers donate thousands of volunteer hours and dollars each year to improve their home communities in and around Monroe County.

About Georgia Power
Georgia Power is the largest electric subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE: SO), America’s premier energy company. Value, Reliability, Customer Service and Stewardship are the cornerstones of the company’s promise to 2.6 million customers in all but four of Georgia’s 159 counties. Committed to delivering clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy at rates below the national average, Georgia Power maintains a diverse, innovative generation mix that includes nuclear, coal and natural gas, as well as renewables such as solar, hydroelectric and wind. Georgia Power focuses on delivering world-class service to its customers every day and the company is consistently recognized by J.D. Power and Associates as an industry leader in customer satisfaction. FAIR: Trump’s Executive Order Sends Needed Message to Worried American Workers: We’ve Got Your Back.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The following statement was issued by Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), in response to today’s executive order barring federal contractors from displacing American workers with foreign guest workers:

«The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) applauds President Trump for issuing an executive order ensuring that American workers won’t be displaced from their jobs by temporary foreign workers. Such an order would be welcome and fully justified even in the best of times. Amid a global pandemic that has resulted in tens of millions of Americans losing their jobs in the past several months, the president’s action is imperative.

«Temporary worker programs are intended to allow employers to access foreign labor in circumstances where U.S. workers are simply not available. That has long ceased to be the case, as employers have brazenly displaced American workers with lower-wage and less mobile guest workers. With an estimated 50 million Americans out of work since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing employers, especially those with lucrative government contracts, or even the government itself, to hire foreign guest workers is an obscene betrayal of the social contract.

«If there is any issue that our country should be able to unite around, it is that American jobs and wages must be protected from erosion by foreign labor, now and especially during the recovery ahead as job opportunities expand.  President Trump’s action reflects his on-going commitment to our nation’s workforce. Specifically, his order addresses the perverse reality that Americans are subsidizing their own demise when companies that are profiting from taxpayer-supported government contracts displace American workers with foreign workers.  That ends today, and hopefully for good.

«The president’s order should be just a first step in reforming our massively abused guest worker programs. Congress must now step up and reform our guest worker programs to ensure that they provide needed workers, not cheaper workers who undermine the opportunities and wages of citizens and permanent residents.

«Today’s executive order is welcome news and should be supported by all who care, or claim to care about the plight of legions of American workers who have lost jobs during this crisis.»

PLYMOUTH, Wis., Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Townsend Bell and Frankie Montecalvo earned the third consecutive win for AIM VASSER SULLIVAN (AVS) in the No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3 in Sunday’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race at Road America. Bell battled in the closing laps under rainy weather conditions to score the first win in the Lexus RC F GT3 for the driver duo. The race was halted for nearly 22 minutes due to inclement weather before restarting for the final few laps.

Along with the win for the No. 12 Lexus, Jack Hawksworth and Aaron Telitz recorded their third straight podium finish in the No. 14 RC F GT3 with a third-place result in Sunday’s race at the Wisconsin road course. Hawksworth and Telitz came into Sunday’s race with back-to-back victories at Daytona International Speedway and Sebring International Raceway.

Telitz, a native of Birchwood, Wisconsin, led the GTD field to the green flag in the No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3 after earning his first career IMSA pole position on Saturday. Montecalvo started the race second in the No. 12 RC F GT3 and held his position prior to a driver change to Townsend Bell on lap 22. Telitz led all 23 laps of his stint before turning driving duties over to Hawksworth on lap 23, who came back on the track in the lead just before his AVS teammate Bell passed him in the No. 12 Lexus. Bell went on to lead 32 laps en route to the victory. Bell lost the lead heading into the final lap, but was able to regain the top spot in turn 11 of the 14-turn, 4.048-mile road course to register the win.

The win marks the first time in IMSA GTD competition that the Lexus RC F GT3 has won three straight races. It is the fifth victory for AVS in their second year of IMSA competition and the third career IMSA win for Bell, the first for Montecalvo and their first win behind the wheel of the Lexus RC F GT3. Lexus currently leads the manufacturer championship points in both the overall and Sprint Cup standings.

Lexus and AIM VASSER SULLIVAN compete next at Virginia International Raceway on Saturday, August 22 at 1:40 p.m. ET. To follow all of the racing action, follow Lexus Racing on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter by using #LexusRCF GT3, #LexusPerformance and #LexusRacing.

AIM VASSER SULLIVAN Driver Quotes
TOWNSEND BELL, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3
Can you tell us about those final laps?
«Mario Farnbacher was coming. We know he’s really good in the wet conditions. We’ve that seen before. It was so treacherous on those last few laps. He (Mario) got by me and then I kind of hung onto him and then he sent it off into the kink. There was standing water everywhere. I was just grabbing gears wide open and my Lexus hooked up and there we were in the lead. Treacherous conditions for sure. We needed a win. Frankie (Montecalvo) has been doing such a good job on the starts and has been giving me such a good car. I felt like today was our day. Proud of everyone at AIM VASSER SULLIVAN.»

What was your mindset in the closing laps?
«There was a lot going on in those last three laps. The red flag came out and I thought there’s no way we’re going back to green, but we had to get back in and get back out there. The first lap, to be fair, was okay. The Michelin’s were incredible in those conditions and then the skies just opened up. It was particularly bad in the carousel and in the kink. (Mario) Farnbacher was going big around the outside and got by and then we kind of hung in there. I was coming out of the carousel, looking up the road and there he is sliding off in the kink out in the grass, near the wall. I hit that standing water and I thought I was going to lose it and for a split second I thought I was just going to lift and coast. I just put my foot down and started grabbing gears basically and the Lexus got by him. That’s all it took and then the yellow came out there. Just kind of hung in there, tried to play it smart and a great strategy from the team. Frankie (Montecalvo) has just been doing an incredible job on his stints giving me a chance to contend each time. We’re thrilled

How big is it for the 12 Lexus team to get the win after your teammates have won the last two?
«It’s been really satisfying for the team to have the one-two qualifying and the one-two finish, but quietly we get a little frustrated because we want a chance at the top step, too. The key moment of the race for us other than that last crazy lap in the rain with (Mario) Farnbacher was with the pit stop where we did the driver change. I think they (No. 14) had a little issue and when Jack (Hawksworth) came out of the pits I got by him exiting turn 3. I had a run and I knew that was my chance. If we didn’t make it happen there, it was probably going to be tough to get something done. I got the position and just settled into a good pace and off we went.»

FRANKIE MONTECALVO, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3
What does it feel like to be in victory lane with the No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3?
«It’s great. It’s perfect for this whole 12 car and excited for the crew. The AIM VASSER SULLIVAN did a great job with our Lexus RC F. We were fast in qualifying and fast in the race and did a great pit stop strategy and it paid off.»

What does it mean to get your first IMSA victory?
«Me and Townsend (Bell) have been trying really hard to get this win for the 12 car. It’s great for the guys. Everything worked out for us in this race. It feels amazing. I think they made a phenomenal call in the pits right at the perfect time. It was a great race for us.»

JACK HAWKSWORTH, No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3
Can you talk about today’s race?
«First off, congratulations to the 12 car for the victory today. It’s great to see Lexus and AIM VASSER SULLIVAN win three in a row. It’s the first time it’s ever happened in GTD so a great accomplishment. Our race was obviously not quite as successful, but still on the podium. We faced some adversity throughout the race. We had some issues and then the visibility was poor after the final race restart. All in all, not a good day but we came away with a good result.»

AARON TELITZ, No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3
How was your race?
«Any day at Road America is a great day. To finish on the podium at my home track was great. That felt really good after a bit of a tough day for us. I had a good stint. Things went really well. Our Lexus RC F GT3 was running strong. I pulled out a good gap and I had a bit of a dodgy in lap with some GTLM traffic and that just set us back a little bit right before Jack took over. When you feel like you had a bad day and you finished third, I think that’s still a really good day. Stoked about that and happy to be on the podium in my home race. Congratulations to the 12 AIM VASSER SULLIVAN team on the victory today.»

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — The San Diego employment law attorneys at Blumenthal Nordrehaug Bhowmik De Blouw LLP, filed a lawsuit against USA Cinema Services LLC, alleging that the company violated The Private Attorney General Act and allegedly failed to lawfully calculate and pay their employees the correct overtime. The lawsuit against USA Cinema Services LLC, is currently pending in the San Diego County Superior Court, Case No. 37-2020-00022694-CU-OE-CTL. To read a copy of the Complaint, please click here.

The lawsuit filed against USA Cinema Services LLC alleges that due to rigorous work schedules, PLAINTIFF and other AGGRIEVED EMPLOYEES were from time to time «unable to take thirty (30) minute off duty meal breaks, nor be fully relieved of duty for their meal periods.» As a result of DEFENDANT’s alleged intentional disregard of the obligation to follow California Labor Codes, DEFENDANT failed to properly calculate and/or pay all required compensation.

PAGA is a mechanism by which the State of California itself can enforce state labor laws through the employee suing under the PAGA who do so as the proxy or agent of the state’s labor law enforcement agencies. An action to recover civil penalties under PAGA is fundamentally a law enforcement action designed to protect the public and not to benefit private parties. The purpose of PAGA is not to recover damages or restitution, but to create a means of «deputizing» citizens as private attorneys general to enforce the Labor Code. As a result of their rigorous work schedules, «PLAINTIFFS and other AGGRIEVED EMPLOYEES were from time to time denied their proper rest periods by DEFENDANT and DEFENDANT’s managers.»
