IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The next evolution of sophisticated luxury is here with the introduction of the GS-6 Series from Karma Automotive, a southern California-based producer of luxury electric vehicles. The first model to be produced in the new series is called the GS-6, and while it will retain the same exotic design of the award-winning Revero GT®, it will be offered at a more attainable price point for drivers who want the environmental benefits of an electric vehicle, without sacrificing design or performance.

«Our brand promise at Karma has always been to provide high-end luxury vehicles and technologies that are driven by innovation and inspire our drivers’ ambitions with new and unique offerings,» said Dr. Lance Zhou, PhD, Karma’s CEO. «As we look to the future, we believe we will change the world of mobility by making luxury electric vehicles more accessible.»

The combination of stimulating design, confidence-inspiring driving and technology, and an aggressively-priced manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) starting at $83,900*, the GS-6 extended range electric vehicle (EREV) is a formidable competitor in the «new luxury» sedan segment. Available now, the GS-6 is offered in three variants: Standard, Luxury, and Sport, with the anticipated all-electric GSe-6, the brand’s first-ever pure battery electric vehicle (BEV), available later in the year starting at $79,900*.

All GS-6 models benefit from the exclusive design and craftsmanship that Karma Automotive is known for, while offering high-tech customization that allows every Karma to be personal and special to its owner. The GS-6 family is available with convenience and safety features including an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) which features Adaptive Cruise Control (with «Stop & Go» feature), Lane Keep Support (LKS, with hands-off detection/warning and haptic steering wheel response for unintended lane departure), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), 360-degree Surround View Cameras System (SVCS), and Parking Distance Monitoring (PDM). The haptic steering wheel can also control audio and phone functions, cameras, driving modes, the adaptive cruise control and the 3-mode regenerative braking system. The GS-6 also has heated power side view mirrors, eight airbags, an anti-theft alarm, Over-the-Air (OTA) remote diagnostics and software update functionality, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, and integrates Karma mobile app support.

The GS-6 Series has Karma’s class-leading powertrain and new vehicle warranty: 8-year/80,000-mile powertrain limited warranty; 4-year/50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty; 6-year unlimited anti-corrosion/perforation limited warranty; and 4-year/50,000 mileage roadside assistance program.

Confidence-Inspiring Performance
Assembled at Karma’s Innovation and Customization Center (KICC) in Moreno Valley, California, which has offered world-class engineering, design, customization and manufacturing services along with electrification platforms since it opened in 2017. The 28 kW HV battery pack together with a 1.5-liter turbocharged powerplant mated to an onboard generator provides electricity to the 400 kW 2-motor propulsion system that offers a compelling combination of drivability, performance and efficiency. This setup provides 536 horsepower and 550 lb-ft torque. All options incorporate Karma’s advanced regenerative braking system.

Beautiful, Functional Design
Karma vehicles have a long and well-established reputation for excellent design and the GS-6 is no exception with focused customization options, including elements like reclaimed wood salvaged from California wildfires, carbon fiber and a range of five interior leather color combinations. New for 2021, Karma has introduced two new exterior colors – Saguaro Green and Imperial Copper – that will join a diverse palette comprised of 10 other California-themed hues. The GS-6 will also offer a black-out option and various exterior carbon fiber elements.

The GS-6 and GS-6L will come standard with 21-inch Cascade Silver wheels and slate-colored Brembo disc brake calipers, while the top-of-the line GS-6S will come standard with 22-inch Dune Twist Midnight Chrome wheels with red Brembo calipers mated to vented discs. Optional caliper colors also include silver, blue, yellow and two shades of orange and certain trim levels include options for either 21- or 22-inch wheels and surface finishes.

Human Machine Interface (HMI)
The high-resolution connected displays in the GS-6 serve as the information hubs for tech-forward drivers, controlling the vehicle systems such as steering feel, accelerator pedal aggressiveness, ADAS behavior, HVAC, audio functions, camera displays, and other vehicle systems. Using Bluetooth connectivity, a driver’s phone can used to activate Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™ and their in-car ecosystems. In addition, the center display on the GS-6 features personalized comfort zones for heated and vented seats, mirrors, temperature, audio and lighting.

Upon accessing the «Energy» page via the center-mounted touch-screen, the driver can enter «Track Mode» which provides several statistics including energy flow, tire pressure and temperature, speed, torque, lap times, g-forces, energy usage, battery function, engine temperature, fuel usage and driving history. The «Driver Stats» page holds the vehicle’s achievement records and can encourage them to «beat» their previous records for racetrack environments or driving efficiency.

The «Energy History» page provides current and historical energy usage, where energy-conscious drivers can monitor the vehicles efficiency over various trips and receive an energy efficiency score, as well as displaying a multitude of other dials and data points.

Karma App
The Karma app functions as a controller offering drivers access to the vehicle’s location, remote preconditioning, door lock-unlock, charge scheduling, vehicle health reporting and an Augmented Reality (AR) user manual.

Firmware Over the Air (FOTA)
Cellular connectivity provides bidirectional software connectivity for remote diagnostics and continuous updates and upgrades helping the vehicle systems remain current and even improve over time.

Karma Extended Range EV Technology
The GS-6 is designed as an «extended-range electric vehicle» or «EREV» to help mitigate consumer range anxiety fears. This range extender setup uses an on-board generator to create electricity which powers the motors propelling the wheels. The vehicle utilizes a transversely mounted, twin-motor, Rear Drive Module (RDM) that includes torque vectoring in the GS-6S variant. The 28-kWh battery pack is good for up to 80 miles of pure electric range and 360 miles of total range1.

The GS-6 uses inverters developed in-house by Karma’s powertrain team that converts DC current from the battery pack and/or generator to power the AC drive motors, and to capture AC power from the regenerative braking system to recharge the battery pack. A single-speed gearbox sits between the twin motors. Because the inverters are integrated with the drive motors, the RDM is an extremely compact and lightweight package.

Three Driving Modes
An efficient, three-cylinder, 1.5-liter, turbocharged powerplant acts as the GS-6’s range-extender. In «Stealth» driving mode, the vehicle is powered by the battery only. In «Sustain» mode, the generator creates electricity to power the vehicle. In «Sport» mode, power is provided to the traction motors from both the battery and the generator. To enhance the driving experience, Karma also implemented an active exhaust system specifically programmed to provide a throaty, sporty note when driving in Sport mode.

Safety is a Priority
To further enhance driver confidence and with vehicle safety at the top of customers’ purchase considerations, Karma has developed and integrated several Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) safety features in the GS-6, including the following technologies:

  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) – Combine a forward-facing camera to detect lane markings with an electric steering system, alerting drivers through haptic feedback when they are about to cross lines.
  • Lane Keeping Support (LKS) – Combine a forward-facing camera to detect lane markings with an electric steering system, actively keeping the vehicle in the center of the lane.
  • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) – Automatically steps in to prevent a collision and is a vital piece of safety technology in all new Karma products.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with «Stop & Go» feature – Accelerates or brakes to maintain a set distance from the car ahead to relieve the stress of operating the accelerator pedal in many cruising conditions. The ACC system can bring the vehicle to a complete stop in normal traffic situations with ‘Resume’ available for extended stops.
  • Blind Spot Monitor – Vehicle-based sensors that detect other vehicles located to the driver’s side and rear and provides user-selectable visual, audible, and haptic steering wheel warnings.
  • Curve Adaptive Headlights – As the driver turns the steering wheel left or right the headlights pivot in that direction to better illuminate what’s in the vehicle’s path and a side camera view can be shown on the center display.
  • Surround View Camera System – Front and rear cameras, side view curb cameras, and a 360-degree overhead vehicle view combine to provide a birds-eye view of your car on the center display. The visual information is reinforced with audible warnings if the vehicle is too close to an obstruction.

More Attainable Pricing
As previously announced, the Revero GT nameplate will be moving up-market in future variants, while the GS-6 will now occupy a slot in the Karma lineup at a much more attainable price-point for entry luxury buyers.

«We’re proud that we have been designing, engineering, producing, selling and servicing luxury EV vehicles for years now, which is something other EV startups can’t say,» said Joost de Vries, Karma’s VP of Global Sales and Customer Experience. «The GS-6 with its more attainable price point, combined with a long list of standard and available convenience features and luxurious design, will appeal to a much larger audience.»

The GS-6 Series
In addition to the GS-6 EREV, 2021 will see Karma Automotive offer it’s first-ever all-electric vehicle, the GSe-6. With a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $79,900*, the U.S.-built vehicle will include a new all-battery powertrain configuration expanding the automaker’s reach in the competitive pure EV market.

SHANGHAI, Feb. 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — One of the world’s leading providers of Energy Storage System (ESS) solutions Pylon Technologies Co., Ltd. («Pylontech» or the «Company»), has announced that despite a tight schedule, they are on track with the plan to expand to 4GWh within three years.

Pylontech new production plant layout

Pointing to a successful IPO on the Shanghai Stock Exchange Star Market on December 30, 2020, as the first storage-focused listed company, which saw Pylontech raising more than CNY2 billion (~$US301 million), Wen Tan, CEO of Pylontech said: «We took only few days off this Chinese New Year holiday so we could continue with both cell production and capacity expansion. This is highly unusual in Chinese tradition, but we are eager to supply our customers, who have been waiting, with more resources».

Since 2013, the company has made a strategic Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)blueprint for the global market. In recent years, Pylontech has been growing steadily and dramatically with the advantage of vertical integrated LFP ESS solutions. Products cover the full voltage range from 12V to 1500V and full capacity from 500Wh to more than 100MWh and meet the demand for residential ESS, commercial and industrial ESS and grid-tied services.

Analysis shows that the global energy storage market is under rapid development and for lithium-ion battery energy storage alone, demand is rising significantly, with supply falling short which means Pylontech is in a favorable position. Data indicates that in 2019, the global market demand for Lithium-ion batteries for communication base stations was 12.1GWh and demand is expected to reach 60GWh in 2025.

«Over the past decade we have been redefining electric power generation, storage and usage with our partners globally» said Geoffrey Song, VP of international business; «Continuous innovation and broad collaboration is the only route to an efficient, sustainable and affordable new energy structure. We strongly believe in the carbon neutral commitments from global leaders and strive to contribute our passion into the movement.»

About Pylontech

Pylontech was founded in 2009 as a dedicated battery storage system(BSS) provider by consolidating their expertise in electrochemistry, power electronics and system integration. By providing reliable and affordable ESS battery products and solutions to global markets, the Company has become one of the world’s top suppliers of lithium battery storage.

DALLAS, Feb. 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Texas Instruments (TI) (Nasdaq: TXN) today introduced a highly integrated Grade 0 brushless DC (BLDC) motor driver for 48-V high-power motor control systems, such as traction inverters and starter generators in mild hybrid electric vehicles (MHEVs). The DRV3255-Q1 can help designers shrink their motor system size by as much as 30%, while providing the industry’s highest gate-drive current for increased protection and output power. Meeting the most stringent safety requirements, the new motor driver was designed according to TI’s TÜV SÜD-certified functional safety development process, helping enable up to Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) D. For more information, see www.ti.com/DRV3255-q1-pr.

To help decrease greenhouse gas emissions globally, automobile manufacturers are increasing the production of MHEVs, which use 48-V motor-drive systems to help reduce emissions from a vehicle’s internal combustion engine. The TI Functional Safety-Compliant DRV3255-Q1 allows manufacturers to design a motor-drive system to help enable MHEV systems up to ASIL D, supplying as much as 30 kW of motor power which can improve the response time of a 48-V motor-drive system in heavy vehicles.

«A 48-V system is a step-change that original equipment manufacturers [OEMs] can implement to meet goals around reducing emissions, while also adding power for advanced driver-assistance system features and managing power-hungry loads such as the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system,» said Asif Anwar, director of the powertrain, body, chassis and safety service at Strategy Analytics. «Combining leading-edge performance characteristics with functional safety and Grade 0 translates to real-world, system-level operational benefits that will help OEMs achieve these goals.»

For more information on the DRV3255-Q1, download the white paper, «How to Build a Small, Functionally Safe 48-V, 30-kW MHEV Motor-Drive System

Reduce board space by as much as 30%

The DRV3255-Q1 is the industry’s first three-phase, 48-V BLDC motor driver to integrate high- and low-side active short-circuit logic, which eliminates external transistors and control logic. By integrating the active short-circuit logic and dynamic fault response, the new motor driver enables designers to not only simplify their designs, but also supply as much as 30 kW of motor power, while reducing board space and bill-of-materials cost in 48-V motor-drive systems.

The active short-circuit logic feature gives system designers the flexibility to arrange metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) connections based on system needs, and helps prevent catastrophic system failures due to overvoltage. The dynamic fault response automatically switches the motor driver to active short-circuit mode in overvoltage conditions, which protects the vehicle’s motor and electrical components from overvoltage stress while optimizing system performance.

Improve response times while protecting 48-V motor-drive systems from harsh conditions

The DRV3255-Q1 supplies the industry’s highest output power levels to improve 48-V motor-drive system response times, allowing drivers even in heavy vehicles like SUVs and trucks to accelerate more quickly after stopping. For motors requiring currents as high as 600 A, the DRV3255-Q1 provides the industry’s highest gate-drive current, which can directly drive up to 1,000-nC gate-charge MOSFETs.

In addition, this Automotive Electronics Council (AEC)-Q100 Grade 0 motor driver protects 48-V powertrain systems from switching transients as high as 95 V and load-dump conditions at a wide temperature range (-40°C to 150°C), eliminating the need for protection circuitry.

Streamline ISO 26262 compliance up to ASIL D

Built with functional safety in mind, the DRV3255-Q1 was designed using TI’s certified functional safety hardware development process and includes built-in safety mechanisms and documentation such as failure modes, effects and diagnostic analysis and a functional safety manual. In addition to the safety mechanisms for the device’s internal failure modes, the digital input/output pins withstand up to 75-V absolute maximum ratings to protect the DRV3255-Q1 against an external 12-V power-supply overvoltage.

Package, availability and pricing

The DRV3255-Q1 is now available from TI in a 64-pin quad flat package. Pricing starts at US$3.99 in 1,000-unit quantities. Full and custom quantity reels are available now, only on TI.com. Multiple payment and shipping options are available on TI.com.

ASPCA® and Wings of Rescue Transport More Than 170 Dogs and Cats from Texas Animal Shelters Impacted by Severe Winter Storms

FORT WORTH, Texas, Feb. 21, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — To assist Texas animal shelters impacted by the recent weather crisis, the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) and Wings of Rescue today led the urgent transport of more than 170 dogs and cats via ground and air to shelters in the Northeast where they will find safe, loving homes. Animal shelters across Texas have been severely affected by the unprecedented winter storms, many losing power and access to water, and these lifesaving transports are providing much needed relief to shelters and animals in their care.

The ASPCA moved pets from Athens Animal Rescue Shelter (Athens, Texas), Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake (Kemp, Texas), and Humane Society of North Texas (Fort Worth, Texas) on three of the ASPCA’s Animal Relocation transport vehicles to two regional airports, where the animals were loaded onto Wings of Rescue flights, funded by the ASPCA. The animals were flown to Brandywine Valley SPCA (New Castle, Del.) and St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center (Madison, N.J.), where they will be cared for until they are adopted.

«The weather crisis in Texas has created dire circumstances for animals across the state, and we’re proud to work with our partners to relocate more than 170 homeless animals to safer areas, which also frees resources at animal shelters to help them continue to serve their communities,» said Matt Bershadker, President & CEO of the ASPCA. «This is a remarkable collaborative effort, demonstrating the deep commitment and compassion of the entire animal welfare community to meet the needs of these vulnerable animals.»

«The Humane Society of North Texas is extremely grateful to have a strong partnership with the ASPCA and Wings of Rescue in these lifesaving flights,» said Cassie Davidson, Director of Communications, Humane Society of North Texas. «The original flight was cancelled last week for safety reasons as the severe winter storm approached Texas. Our dedicated staff cared for all of our pets during frigid weather conditions over the past week while our shelter was closed to the public. The flights today will free up nearly 100 kennels so we can reopen our shelter on Sunday to the public for intake and adoptions. We know these pets will be going to loving homes and we couldn’t be happier for them.»

«February brought us a double whammy. Right before the extreme weather set in, we were hit with 80 dogs and puppies from a hoarding case,» said Jennifer Miller, Director of the Athens Animal Rescue Shelter. «The ASPCA was right there with us, working on plans to move almost half of these dogs to shelters where they will be adopted quickly.»

«Severe winter weather greatly impacted Texas this past week as well as our shelter. We are so grateful to the ASPCA Relocation Team, and Wings of Rescue for coming to OUR ‘rescue,’ to relocate 37 of our dogs to find loving homes,» said Sharon Banaszak, Director, Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake. «We are very proud to be a partner with the ASPCA in their lifesaving relocation program. ASPCA provided the support, and resources this week to assist when we needed help the most.»

The ASPCA deploys nationwide to assist in relocation, search-and-rescue, sheltering and placement of animals during disaster situations including severe weather, wildfires, tornadoes and floods. In addition, we work closely with local agencies across the country to help enhance their animal response capabilities through grants and training opportunities.

The ASPCA is equally committed to saving lives and preventing animal homelessness through animal relocation. Since 2014, the ASPCA’s Animal Relocation Program has transported over 165,000 animals across the country on more than 7,100 ground and air trips in an effort to find them adoptable homes more quickly. For more information on the ASPCA’s efforts to help animals, please visit www.aspca.org.

About the ASPCA®
Founded in 1866, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) is the first animal welfare organization in North America and serves as the nation’s leading voice for animals. More than two million supporters strong, the ASPCA’s mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States. As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, the ASPCA is a national leader in the areas of anti-cruelty, community outreach and animal health services. SEATTLE, Feb. 21, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — To help people find available accommodations now and throughout the recovery process, Expedia.com activated the Emergency Accommodations Portal (https://www.expedia.com/texas) to assist in providing real-time information on hotel availability throughout the state of Texas.

The severe winter weather in Texas caused widespread damage and it’s become increasingly clear that many residents may be displaced from their homes as they await power, water or for repairs to be made. Expedia teams are working directly with hotel partners to ensure availability is accurate, current and at a fair price in an effort to remove any unnecessary added stress during an already difficult time.

«We are happy to put our resources forward to assist those who need to find a safe place to stay now and during the recovery,» said Shiv Singh, SVP and GM for Brand Expedia.  «Our hearts go out to those who have been impacted by the winter storms across Texas and hope that this can help to make finding a warm place to stay a bit easier as we’re working to not only pull through available inventory, but we have also put in price caps to ensure rates remain stable and fair.»
