Mitrex introduces solar-integrated products to transform buildings into self-sufficient power systems

Mitrex’s technology offers architects, developers and buildings owners a cost-efficient energy solution

ETOBICOKE, ON, March 2, 2021 /PRNewswire/ –  Mitrex, a GTA-based solar technology manufacturer, is introducing a patented solution that can transform a building’s exterior into a vertical, self-sufficient power system. As part of the company’s commitment to a net-zero carbon future, the immediate focus is on pioneering renewable energy solutions for the construction industry.

The company’s patented building-integrated photovoltaic technology (BIPV) – via solar cladding and glass railing – extends a building’s energy-generating potential from rooftops down to vertical walls. It can be easily installed on new developments, as well as retro-fitted on existing developments. What’s most important is that Mitrex’s products are not only cost-effective, but aesthetically pleasing for building owners and developers.

«Our mission is to be the catalyst that accelerates the adoption of sustainable, energy-generating, human-made structures,» says CEO Danial Hadizadeh. «With residential, commercial and industrial buildings accounting for 40 per cent of annual greenhouse gas emissions globally, it’s clear that developers and buildings owners can play an integral role in curbing emissions by investing in BIPV technology.»

The Mitrex solar cladding materials can retain the same esthetic as its non-energy-producing counterparts, and can mimic various construction materials such as concrete, timber, or stucco. This allows building owners, architects, and developers to embrace and profit from solar energy without compromising beauty.

Renewable energy, especially solar energy, is not a new concept. However, adoption has historically been hampered by poor esthetics, high price tags and slow production. With the continuous increase in the earth’s temperature, proactive solutions – like the use of BIPV technology – are crucial. Various power grids across North America have been compromised in the face of extreme weather due to dated technology. Sustainable, solar-based microgrids have the power to mitigate weather-related power outages, saving cities millions of dollars on power restoration.

«Extreme power outages from weather events can ultimately be avoided if microgrid solutions are implemented,» says Hadizadeh. «In the most recent widespread outage in Texas, 3.4 million homes and businesses were without power for a dangerously long period. Self-sufficient systems not only save hundreds of millions of dollars, but also can prevent or limit the effects of climate change on communities.»

Mitrex’s solar cladding and SolaRail™ are only the beginning. With over 50 projects in the works, the company’s extensive investment into R&D promises a plethora of integrated solar products in the near future, including windows, side paneling and more.

Other key benefits of Mitrex’s solar solutions include:

  • Same cost, and in some cases cheaper, than traditional materials while lowering future energy costs
  • Seamless solar cell integration results in limitless design and colour options, allowing the technology to blend in with any building’s design
  • Potential to claim tax credits and take advantage of government incentives
  • Strong environmental impact: 13 million kWh of green energy can be produced from one building in 30 years
  • Contributes to LEED points and reduces building emissions since single-function materials become multi-functional
  • Excellent wind resistance, high safety standards, bird-friendly
  • Year-round fabrication and installation capability supported by an exceptional warranty

About Mitrex
Mitrex strives to be a world leader in the green building sector by researching, advancing and manufacturing integrated solar technology. We provide full turnkey services, combining the creation and installation of the building envelope together with solar energy generating systems. Our mission is to be the catalyst that accelerates the adoption of sustainable, energy-generating, human-made structures. We carefully balance beauty and efficiency. Our belief is that rapid, low-cost, sustainable manufacturing is economically viable, and is the road to a brighter future for humanity. LONDON, March 2, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — EY today announces the 2021 Better Working World Data Challenge, a global competition for aspiring data scientists. The Challenge is part of the EY commitment to innovate and use technology to address some of the world’s largest environmental and climate change problems. The focus of this year’s competition is on leveraging data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) to help find solutions to better manage wildfires.

The global Challenge has been expanded to include all university students and non-students with less than two years of professional experience in data science or a related field, building on the inaugural 2019 program where participation was limited to university students from 19 countries.

EY is working in collaboration with Microsoft, which is providing its Azure cloud platform to participants. Individuals will use the platform along with satellite imagery provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to create algorithms to help wildfire management teams improve front-line decision-making during fire emergency responses. These models will include capabilities to generate fire-edge maps or predict where a fire may spread.

Carmine Di Sibio, EY Global Chairman and CEO, says:

«The EY purpose of building a better working world drives us every day. We are committed to enabling the next generation of talent in finding solutions to some of the most pressing challenges globally. Many countries have faced significant loss of life and disruption due to wildfires and we are proud to support efforts that can look to address this issue using the power of data and technology.»

During the three-month competition period, a series of webinars jointly provided by technologists from EY and Microsoft will provide participants with additional information about the tasks in the Challenge and help them familiarize themselves with the Azure environment, develop additional skills and refine their work. OXFORD, England, March 2, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Tokamak Energy. A new analysis of experimental data from Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and Culham Centre for Fusion Energy demonstrates that spherical tokamaks can have an efficiency ten times higher than conventional tokamaks such as JET and ITER.

Tokamak Energy Logo

High efficiency is an essential requirement for making electricity from compact, relatively inexpensive fusion power plants, and tokamaks are the leading fusion power device. With their compact «cored apple» rather than doughnut shape, spherical tokamaks are particularly attractive for fusion power production. They operate at a high ratio of plasma pressure to magnetic field and at high values of self-driven «bootstrap» current that spontaneously arises within the fusion plasma.

This new paper by Alan Costley and Steven McNamara published in Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion (https://dx.doi.org/10.1088/1361-6587/abcdfc) shows for the first time how this difference impacts performance under reactor conditions. The paper is already one of the «most read» articles in the prestigious peer-reviewed journal. This repeats the success of Alan Costley, who topped the «most read» charts with a ground-breaking 2015 paper showing that tokamaks did not have to be huge to be power-generating.

The paper indicates how multiple engineering challenges will have to be overcome to turn theory into reality to construct a compact fusion power plant. For example, high-temperature superconductors (HTS) can provide compact, high-field magnets, and significant progress is being made with their development at Tokamak Energy and elsewhere. Tokamak Energy’s proven design of HTS magnets is uniquely suitable for spherical tokamaks. The results of this latest physics study and the novel magnet technology offer the tantalising possibility of a compact, high-performance fusion module in a relatively short time scale.

The order from Saipem, a global leader in engineering, drilling and construction in the energy and infrastructure sectors, comprises Alfa Laval Framo pumping systems. They will be used in a so-called suction bucket technology in the installation of Seagreen, Scotland’s largest offshore wind park. Once finalized it will include 114 turbines producing 1075 MW to supply 1.3 million households with low-carbon energy. Framo pumping systems’ suction (vacuum) technology will secure and safely anchor the wind turbine platforms to the seabed. The technology has been used to secure offshore oil platforms since the 1990s.

«This second order for our Framo pumping systems used in suction bucket foundations to wind farms is an important milestone for us as it cements our position in this application and takes our long-proven and validated technology from offshore oil platforms to renewable applications,» says Sameer Kalra, President of the Marine Division. «Our knowledge and experience from delivering innovative and reliable products to the offshore industry is now also making a difference within renewable energy, to the benefit of our customers and the environment.»

Did you know that… the Alfa Laval Framo technology, used in installation of the foundation of the wind turbines, works in a similar way as pumping water out of buckets which then creates a suction/vacuum pressing the `buckets’ into the seabed?
