AN OPEN LETTER ON THE POLITICS OF AMBITION by Glenda Glover, Ph.D., JD, CPA President, Tennessee State University

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Black women all across this nation should be outraged by the commentary that a qualified African-American woman is «too ambitious» to be selected as the running mate for presumptive Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden.  Biden allies, Chris Dodd, Co-Chair of the Biden Vice Presidential Selection Committee, along with major donors have essentially asserted that ambition should bar an otherwise qualified woman from…

Biden allies, Chris Dodd, Co-Chair of the Biden Vice Presidential Selection Committee, along with major donors have essentially asserted that ambition should bar an otherwise qualified woman from consideration for the Biden ticket.  Not only should Black women be outraged, but all Americans should be equally offended.

Despite seemingly insurmountable odds, African-American women have excelled in all areas of human endeavor including corporate America, government, law, medicine, education, sports, and the arts, among other fields.  Yet, African-American women continue to wrestle with a nation that repeatedly questions and diminishes their worth, competence, and capacity to add distinctive value. And, now, even the ambition of African-American women is being weaponized to further deny opportunities for which they have trained and worked hard to just be considered.  Since when did being ambitious become a negative trait given that the American dream is predicated upon this very notion?

Ambition has been the saving grace of Black people since we were dropped on the shores of America in 1619.  The resolve for freedom birthed ambition and set the course for Black women who struggled to keep their families together as they longed for a better life.  The ambition of Black women too numerous to name was instrumental in securing basic rights like liberty, justice, education and equal representation through the right to vote.

The outrage occasioned by the misuse of the word «ambition» is heightened when we consider historically that references to Black women as «overly ambitious» have been code words designed to marginalize Black women, deny them opportunities, trammel their hopes, mute their voices and dehumanize their existence.  White men in power who have long mischaracterized Black women as «too ambitious» have used the term as code for angry, aggressive, and intemperate in order to render us invisible and deny us a seat at countless tables of power.

Moreover, the «too ambitious» commentary advanced by Chris Dodd and the Biden donors is a direct assault on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and an affront to the practical education HBCUs necessarily impart to students. The Vice Presidential contender against whom this criticism was leveled attended one of the most prestigious HBCUs in the country where she was trained, among other things, to be ambitious. So, this dog whistle undermines one of the important qualities HBCUs instill in Black students. HBCU graduates are taught to achieve, to persevere, to grow and, yes, to be ambitious. HBCU graduates are commanded to be trailblazers — to go where there is no path and leave a trail.

As an HBCU president, I was simply stunned to read this latest assault on African-American women. I encounter thousands of young Black women from various backgrounds who arrive on college campuses with passive, indifferent attitudes which are nurtured into competence, ambition, and a commitment to leave their mark on the world.  The negative connotation Dodd and the donors apply to «ambition» is precisely what I cultivate and celebrate.

There is no place in the Democratic Party for these kinds of thoughts and attitudes, and the Democratic Party should strongly condemn these statements.  The «ambition» of African-American women has served the Democratic Party well over the years and has, in fact, been determinative in the outcome of critical elections.  Not only are Black women the most loyal voters for the Democratic Party, they are crucial to igniting Black voters across all demographics to turn out in record numbers. When Black women are engaged, they bring their families, their networks and their communities along with them.

Ambitious Black women from all walks of life have offered themselves for service in upcoming elections.  No matter which candidates you support, you cannot support the marginalization of talent and experience by framing it negatively and calling it «too ambitious.»  The hallmark of Black women from HBCUs is their ambition. It is their calling card. That is how we train them. When I see ambition in a Black woman, I know we have done our job.

65% of students dislike virtual learning environments necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — A survey released in June to university students across North America, South America and Europe executed in 6 languages (English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese and Italian) surfaced a number of critical insights concerning global virtual teaching and the recent transition away from campus classrooms.

The survey is part of the «Excellence in Virtual Education» (EVE) project undertaken by the Three Amigos1, three professors at several major universities, and four of their students2. The goal of the EVE project is to develop a virtual educational experience that is better than that found in classrooms on campus. A critical initial step was to «learn from the learners»—assessing student satisfaction with virtual classroom environments and, more importantly, performance and engagement levels compared with those in physical classrooms.

An astounding 1,000 global students from 89 universities from around the world expressed their thoughts regarding the past, present and future of virtual education. «We were overwhelmed with the enthusiasm and passion that students expressed in their responses,» said Hap Klopp, a Professor at Hult International Business School and founder and long-time CEO of The North Face.

The challenges of the new virtual medium and the rapidity of the changeover forced by the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a mere 35 percent of respondents saying they ‘liked’ the shift to virtual teaching, leaving a vast majority who did not like this transition.  Many complained that they had problems staying engaged and that classes were too long for a virtual environment. Others mentioned that new tools and platforms were needed to improve virtual education.  The student respondents also expressed their belief that virtual teaching is significantly different from in-class learning, and, therefore, traditional classroom lectures often do not effectively transfer to virtual environments.

The survey showed that, after the conversion to a virtual educational environment, out of the students who experienced a change:

  • 79% reported lower overall performance and outcomes, and
  • 59% reported lower test results.

When asked about what could be improved in virtual teaching, respondents made two strong suggestions that instructors everywhere should hear:

1.   More interactions:

    • 75% wanted more personal interaction with professors and fellow students. Respondents pointed out that it was very important to learn by sharing ideas, knowledge, opinions, points of view, and experiences. In their experience, virtual education does not measure up to physical classroom education, so far.

2.   More class projects:

    • 65% said that in-class projects, especially group projects, were very valuable in virtual classes to recapture some of the vitality and socialization of the physical classroom.

The EVE survey was constructed as a combination of multiple choice and open-ended questions.  Based on insights conveyed in the 1,000 responses received, a second survey (V2) has been produced to provide more definitive and comprehensive definition of the overall elements needed to achieve the EVE projects goal of making virtual teaching better than in-class, on-campus teaching. V2 is being sent to a wider group of educational stakeholders in virtual teaching—university students, as well as professors and administrators, for the purpose of expanding on the points raised in the initial survey.  It is written in six languages for recipients in North America, Latin America, and Europe.  The EVE Project Team is collecting 10,000 additional responses via version 2 of the survey to obtain the requisite input to finalize the study.

If interested in seeing the results of the V2 survey and the broader results of the EVE study when completed, click here to leave your name, email address, and your school affiliation.  In addition to a summary of the responses, the EVE study will identify some of the best teaching methodologies and pedagogical practices for virtual teaching. Moreover, it will provide insights into some of the potential platforms, tools, methodologies, and technologies currently being piloted by the Three Amigos at Hult International Business School, San Francisco, California.

BOSTON, Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Workable, the world’s leading hiring platform, released its New World of Work survey report. The report focused on the changes in the work environment, the subsequent major shifts, and the new challenges going forward in response to COVID-19.

«Whether it’s a catalyst or the direct cause, COVID-19 is pushing us towards a new world of working and living,» said Workable CEO Nikos Moraitakis. «What that will look like, and when it’ll happen, we’re not entirely sure yet. But this study will push the conversation as we work towards a new and very different future.»

A total of 356 business and HR leaders from numerous industries completed the 30-question survey.

Major findings include:

  • Remote work is the big paradigm shift
  • Tech adoption is the top priority when shifting to remote
  • Employee engagement and remote hiring/onboarding are major concerns going forward

Additional insights include:

  • The spread of COVID-19 forced 62.6% of businesses to move fully to a remote-first environment. Another 32.3% moved part of their operations to remote.
  • 56.5% plan to make remote permanent for some of their workforce going forward.
  • 68% of those going remote did it without disruption because they had technology in place. And 46.1% will prioritize tech when going remote in future.
  • 7 in 10 education workers said they could go remote – but technology isn’t in place for it.
  • Candidate engagement/evaluation/onboarding will be major pain points, more so in remote.
  • Executives worry more about productivity while employees are more concerned about engagement.

Even in the open-ended answers, there was no clear solution to navigate this new world of work. It presents fresh challenges that require a new way of thinking.

In short, COVID-19 is forcing us to evolve. We now must figure out how to do it. Nikos outlines his thoughts here.

Background:

Workable is the world’s leading hiring platform. Since 2012, more than 20,000 employers worldwide have used Workable’s recruitment tools, processes, and automation to hire over 1 million candidates. PITTSBURGH, Aug. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Delta Care Rx, one of the nation’s leading and innovative pharmacy benefit management companies exclusively serving hospice and serious illness providers, today announced the accelerated roll out of a new tool to ensure hospices can comply with upcoming changes to the Hospice Election Statement that are scheduled to go into effect October 1.

«The last thing hospices need in the middle of a pandemic is more change and new requirements, but that’s what the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has scheduled when it rolls out these new mandates,» said Delta Care CEO Mary Mihalyo, PharmD, BCPS. With these changes, Medicare beneficiaries will be able to request a detailed addendum to their hospice election statement that must include a written list and a rationale for every condition, item, drug or service that the hospice provider has determined to be unrelated to the beneficiary’s terminal illness and related conditions.

«This change will place a premium on hospice providers effectively managing de-prescribing at time of admission, including communicating clearly and effectively with patients and their caregivers,» added Wayne H. Grant, PharmD, RPh, MBA, the newly appointed National Clinical Innovation Officer for Delta Care.

CMS is mandating these changes out of a concern that hospice beneficiaries may not be fully informed at the time of admission or throughout their hospice stay of the items, services and drugs the hospice has determined to be unrelated to their terminal illness and related conditions and therefore not covered under the Medicare Hospice Benefit.

Delta Care’s solution—an electronic CMS Addendum Tool (eCAT™)—will enable hospice providers to manage this change easily and effectively. Delta Care is building the tool as an optional add-on to its existing On-Demand Pharmacist Services (ODPS). Through ODPS, Delta Care pharmacists consult in real time with a hospice provider’s admissions and onboarding clinicians during each hospice admission.

The Delta Care ODPS, also commonly known as Delta Care’s back-pocket-pharmacist-solution, provides 24/7/365 support for clinical decision-making, cost control and quality outcomes thanks to a team of dedicated hospice pharmacists who offer immediate therapeutic consultation with every call from hospice clinicians at the patient’s bedside.

In addition, Delta Care has posted a free one-hour on-line seminar on the changes to the hospice election statement and addendum, offering one no-cost continuing education credit for participants through its Delta Campus educational portal.

About Delta Care Rx

Delta Care Rx (www.deltacarerx.com) transforms and improves the hospice pharmacy sector through business transparency, innovation, extreme customer service, and the maintenance of vital community-pharmacy relationships. As a pharmacist-owned, privately held provider, Delta Care sets the industry benchmark for pharmacy benefit management, mail order pharmacy options, on-demand pharmacist services and hospice-tailored electronic prescribing. In addition, Delta Care offers electronic tools, including cutting-edge telehealth technology, to improve the quality of patient care and simplify essential workflow and ordering processes within hospice settings.
