Aireon’s system is not only extending Air Traffic Service (ATS) surveillance in oceanic airspace, but it also represents an ideal solution for a region where weather disruptions can create issues and ground sensor maintenance is a challenge.

«With the operational deployment of Aireon’s air traffic surveillance system, the coverage of Isavia ANS’s vast control area was fortified immediately, enabling both increased efficiency and safety of our service,» said Guðmundur J. Kristjánsson, Project Manager, Isavia ANS. He added, «Aireon’s implementation team worked around the clock with our operational staff, during a global pandemic, to complete the system acceptance phase and usher in our next generation of real-time air traffic capabilities.»

«Isavia ANS controls one of the most strategic airspaces in the world, overseeing 30 million passengers to date. The collaboration and dedication of the teams to deploy the system has been incredible,» said Michele Carandente, Director of EMEA, Aireon. «Isavia ANS has shown extraordinary leadership in moving the system into the operational phase.»

Aireon’s data, from a functional perspective, has been integrated into Isavia ANS’s Display System (ISDS), Flight Data Processing System (FDPS) and the ATM Surveillance Tracker and Server (ARTAS), a widely used Surveillance Data Processing System in Europe.

Volta Trucks selects Proterra to supply the vehicle battery for the full-electric Volta Zero

LONDON and BURLINGAME, Calif., Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Volta Trucks, the full-electric commercial vehicle manufacturer, has selected Proterra, a leading innovator in commercial vehicle electrification technology, as the battery supplier for the Volta Zero. The Volta Zero is the world’s first purpose-built, full-electric 16-tonne commercial vehicle designed specifically for inner city freight distribution.

<div class="PRN_ImbeddedAssetReference"…

LONDON and BURLINGAME, Calif., Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Volta Trucks, the full-electric commercial vehicle manufacturer, has selected Proterra, a leading innovator in commercial vehicle electrification technology, as the battery supplier for the Volta Zero. The Volta Zero is the world’s first purpose-built, full-electric 16-tonne commercial vehicle designed specifically for inner city freight distribution.

This significant contract completes Volta Trucks’s strategic sourcing of the electric powertrain. Volta Zero vehicles are scheduled to start customer trials later in 2021, with tens of thousands of trucks expected on the roads soon after series production starts around 12 months later.

The Proterra-supplied battery will give the Volta Zero a real-world range of 200kms on a single charge. This distance is more than enough for most inner city logistics and distribution vehicles which spend most of their operating time in slow-moving start / stop traffic. The Proterra battery pack delivers industry-leading energy density and a customizable design. This allows the battery in the Volta Zero to be located between the chassis rails – its safest possible location for the design.

The collaboration represents US-based Proterra’s entry into the European truck market. Proterra’s battery technology has been proven over 17 million miles driven by its own transit vehicles and has also been chosen by other world-class commercial vehicle manufacturers to electrify delivery vans, school buses, coaches, low-floor shuttles, and construction equipment.

Proterra batteries feature passive and active safety features, liquid thermal conditioning, and adheres to state-of-the-art functional safety standards, including ISO 26262 (up to ASIL C). The Proterra battery is designed to deliver over 4,000 recharge cycles over 10 years, without significant degradation, to ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

Jack Allen, Proterra Chief Executive Officer, said; «Embracing clean, quiet transportation for all not only benefits how we move people around cities and towns, but also how we provide goods and services to the communities we live in. Proterra is excited to work with Volta Trucks as we accelerate the transition to 100% clean transportation and deliver Proterra Powered clean energy vehicles to communities across Europe

Gareth Joyce, President of Proterra Powered and Energy, added; «Proterra and Volta Trucks share a common vision of clean, healthy communities served by zero-emission, electric vehicles. We look forward to building our relationship together as we support Volta Trucks in the development of the revolutionary Volta Zero commercial vehicle.»

Chief Executive Officer of Volta Trucks, Rob Fowler, concluded; «I’m delighted to welcome Proterra – a world-class innovative engineering partner – to the supply chain for the Volta Zero. When talking to our extensive group of customers, vehicle range is uppermost in their minds as it sits at the heart of the vehicle’s ability to deliver for them. It was therefore imperative that we work with an industry-leader to ensure the quality, longevity, and safe performance of the battery. Proterra’s cutting-edge but well-proven battery technology perfectly delivers all of this for us and our customers.»

About the Volta Zero.
The Volta Zero is the world’s first purpose-built full-electric 16-tonne vehicle designed for inner-city freight deliveries, reducing the environmental impact of freight deliveries in city centres. Designed from the ground up with an operating pure-electric range of 150 – 200 kms (95 – 125 miles), the Volta Zero will eliminate an estimated 180,000 tonnes of CO2 by 2025.

Safety is also at the heart of Volta Trucks, with its ambition of being the safest large commercial vehicle manufacturer. The Volta Zero was designed for electric from the outset, which facilitates a step-change in vehicle, driver and pedestrian safety. Thanks to the removal of the internal combustion engine, the operator of a Volta Zero sits in a central driving position, with a much lower seat height than a conventional truck. This combination, plus a glass house-style cab design, gives the driver a wide 220-degrees of visibility, minimising dangerous blind spots.

The prototype Volta Zero was launched in September 2020, with the first vehicles expected to be operating with customers in late 2021.

About Proterra

Scania 540 S wins big in comparative press tests

SÖDERTÄLJE, Sweden, Feb. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Last autumn, Scania participated in two comparison tests organised in Germany by European trade magazines. The results for the 1000 Punkte Test (1000 Point Test) and European Truck Challenge (ETC) have now been published and, up against leading competitors, Scania’s 540 S tractor has won both, and with healthy margins ahead of the runners-up.

«Winning these comparison tests is yet another point of proof for Scania’s industry-leading position,» says Stefan Dorski, Senior Vice President and Head of Scania Trucks. «When independent and experienced journalists assess all the relevant aspect of our products with scientific methods and compare them with our peers, the results tell a story that is highly relevant for potential truck buyers.»

The 1000 Point and ETC tests are among the most established comparison tests for commercial heavy trucks in the world. They are organised by German trade magazines with the participation of senior journalists from other countries. Cab-related qualities like the driver environment, sleeping comfort and noise levels are assessed, as well as other aspects such as road handling, gear shifting and serviceability. The trucks are also driven more than 300 km on different types of public roads, equipped with calibrated fuel-measurement equipment to confirm the true fuel consumption with the highest accuracy. Every aspect is then given a score that adds to each truck’s final result.

«We are awarded the highest overall scoring in both of these test, but personally I am most proud of the fact that our truck has the lowest fuel consumption while at the same time offering the highest average speed,» says Dorski. «It highlights Scania’s inherent transport efficiency. And not only will our customers benefit from the outstanding result, it also gives a substantial – here and now – contribution in the fight against the climate challenge from CO2 emissions the world is facing.»

The 1000 Point Test, organised by Michael Kern, is published in several trade magazines, including «Lastauto Omnibus». The ETC, organised by Hans-Jürgen Wildhage is published in «KFZ Anzeiger» and several other magazines. Participating in the 1000 Point Test, which took place in October 2020, were the Scania 540 S, MAN TGX 18.510 BLS and Mercedes Actros 1853 LS. Participating in the ETC test in November 2020 were the DAF XF 530, Scania 540 S, MAN TGX 18.510 BLS and Mercedes Actros 1853 LS. All of the major European manufacturers were invited to both tests.

McLaren Automotive, the British creator of luxury, high-performance supercars, has revealed the long-anticipated McLaren Artura today, marking the beginning of both a new chapter for the pioneering luxury supercar company and a new era in supercar technology and performance.

McLaren Artura

Underpinned by the McLaren philosophy of super-lightweight engineering, the Artura is a distillation of every attribute inherent in a McLaren, combined with faster throttle response, lower emissions and ability to run in pure EV mode, thanks to its ground-breaking electrified powertrain.

«We are proud and honoured to showcase the all-new McLaren Artura in the Kingdom of Bahrain and on the day of its global debut. This revolutionary High-Performance Hybrid supercar marks a beginning of a new era for both McLaren Automotive and the wider supercar segment. Every drop of our engineering expertise gained across more than 50 years of racing has been poured into the Artura, to deliver a combination of breath-taking performance, driver engagement and dynamic excellence, which our brand is so renowned for. I am confident that this extraordinary creation will appeal to both our existing and new customers in the Middle East region.»

Brett Soso, Managing Director – Europe, Middle East & Africa, McLaren Automotive Ltd.

The McLaren Artura is the first model built on the new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA), which sets new standards for advanced and flexible chassis design and has been optimised for hybrid applications through bespoke battery compartment, domain-based ethernet electrical architecture, as well as electrical air-conditioning. The new platform compliments a wealth of additional weight-reduction measures, resulting in class-leading lightest dry weight of 1,395kg*, and a DIN kerb weight of 1,489kg*.

At the heart of the Artura’s all-new powertrain is a lightweight 2,993cc twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine, paired to a bespoke eight-speed transmission and a compact e-motor, which provides the supercar with instant torque and improved throttle response. The package generates a combined power output of 680PS (671 bhp) and 720S Nm of torque, which translates to a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 488PS per tonne*, as well as truly breath-taking performance figures. The Artura’s top speed is electronically limited to 330km/h with 0-100km/h reached in just 3.0 seconds* and 0-200 km/h in 8.3 seconds*.

The Artura is designed with full Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) capability and can be charged to an 80% level in just 2.5 hours. The battery pack, comprising five lithium-ion modules, can also harvest power from the combustion engine during driving, depending on the driving mode selected. This solution provides the driver with a unique ability to enjoy the car in silent, pure EV mode with a range of up to 30km and a top speed of 130km/h.

The engineering artistry beneath the Artura’s skin is complemented by its exterior design, which gives the car a ‘shrink-wrapped’ appearance and pushes the McLaren design language seen in recent models to a new level. The technical sculpture of the car has been conceived to optimise aerodynamic performance, as well as cooling, and is driven by the McLaren design principle of ‘everything for a reason’.

Every McLaren cockpit is built around the driver, but the Artura brings a new level of meaning to that principle. The driving experience is enhanced through a new Digital Instrument Cluster mounted to the steering column, so it moves in conjunction with the steering wheel. The Artura is also the first McLaren to offer Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, as well as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which include Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop/Go, Road-Sign Recognition, Lane-Departure Warning and High-Beam Assist.

Peace of mind on quality and durability were core considerations with the all-new Artura and it is no surprise that its development programme was the most rigorous ever in McLaren’s history.  Available to order now from McLaren retailers, with first deliveries to customers commencing in Q3 of this year, the Artura is priced at AED 954,000 in the UAE, and in standard specification, which includes a 3-year service plan, Smartphone Integration Package and Practicality Pack as a no cost option. This pack includes Vehicle Lift, power-folding heated door mirrors with ‘Dip in Reverse’ functionality, four front and four rear parking sensors, rear-view camera, Homelink® and soft-close doors.
