TORRANCE, California, Oct. 1, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — After more than two decades and one million units sold since MDX first debuted, Acura is set to unveil the most ambitious redesign of America’s all-time best-selling 3-row luxury SUV of yet. The fourth-generation MDX, debuting in prototype form Oct. 14, will usher-in new levels of Acura design, performance, technology and craftsmanship, assuming the mantle as the brand’s new flagship model.

«We’re accelerating Acura’s commitment to Precision Crafted Performance and this fourth-generation MDX is the most ambitious and consequential redesign of an Acura core model in our history,» said Jon Ikeda, vice president and Acura brand officer. «This all-new MDX will take us into new territory in terms of performance, prestige and emotional appeal.»

A teaser image and short video [acura.us/MDXPrototype1] released today, highlight the sharply sculpted beltline running the perimeter of the wider, lower and longer MDX, connecting the Jewel Eye® LED headlights at the front to the Chicane™ LED taillights in the rear.

The original MDX was the industry’s first three-row SUV to be based on a unibody platform, offering superior comfort, space and driving performance than existing truck-based SUVs. The model earned critical praise, including 2001 North American Truck of the Year and 2001 Motor Trend SUV of the Year awards. Over the past two decades, cumulative sales have surpassed 1 million units, securing MDX’s place as the best-selling Acura model, accounting for roughly one-third of the brand’s U.S. sales since its launch.

SANTA CLARITA, California, Sept. 30, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Honda Performance Development (HPD), which leads all Honda and Acura high-performance racing programs in North America, today announced that David Salters will become the seventh president in its history, succeeding Ted Klaus, who will retire from HPD, effective Dec. 1, after a 30-year career with Honda.

Honda Performance Development Technical Director David Salters will take over as HPD President on December 1.

«Ted Klaus has been a great leader for Honda Performance Development, demonstrated by the success we have enjoyed in both IndyCar and IMSA racing in the two seasons he has led HPD,» said Dave Gardner, executive vice president of National Operations for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. «As we prepare for the exciting electrified era ahead in North American motorsports, we are confident in turning to someone with the experience of David Salters from inside HPD to lead us into the future.»

A veteran race engineer with more than a quarter century of experience in the world’s pinnacle racing series of Formula 1 and INDYCAR, Salters will lead HPD, founded in 1993, into an exciting new stage of North American motorsports, including the development of a new electrified power unit for INDYCAR.

Salters joined HPD in 2015 as a chief engineer and engine technical leader, serving as technical director since 2019. As president, he will have responsibility for overseeing Honda’s racing and engineering activities and working directly with the company’s racing teams and sponsors. Prior to joining HPD, Salters had a series of roles in high profile racing programs, including serving as the head of ICE power unit development for the Ferrari Formula 1 program, as head of F1 engine development at Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines (formerly Ilmor) and as a development/design engineer for the CART Indy car program at Cosworth Racing Ltd.

«I am humbled to have this opportunity to lead HPD as we head into a new electrified era of North American pinnacle motorsport,» said Salters. «HPD is unique within the racing community, with so many technical capabilities under one roof that enable us to design and develop powertrains and complete vehicle performance. Looking forward, we will develop and showcase our technology and the skills of our associates through all forms of motorsport from karting all the way through to pinnacle racing in North America

Klaus, who became president of HPD in April 2019, joined Honda in 1990 at Honda R&D Americas, Inc. in Ohio, where the company has a full-fledged product development center. He began his career as a chassis development engineer, evolving into a role as the company’s first chief vehicle dynamics evaluator. In 2013, Klaus took on the assignment of a lifetime, as the global development leader of the second-generation Acura NSX, which entered the U.S. market in 2016.

«Ted Klaus has been an incredibly inspirational leader and a true personification of Honda’s Challenging Spirit, something we will draw upon in the days ahead,» said Salters.

«It was always my goal to retire with a feeling of complete professional fulfillment and with one-hundred percent confidence in the leadership that will take HPD into the future,» said Klaus. «Dave Salters is the right leader, with the right background and experience for what will be an exciting new era for HPD and for racing in North America

Under Klaus’ guidance, HPD has delivered tremendous track success in 2019-2020. Honda successfully defending the Manufacturers’ Championship in 2019, recording eight wins in the season.  This year, with seven IndyCar wins in 11 races, Honda again leads the IndyCar Manufacturers’ Championship, as the company seeks a third consecutive title in 2020.

In IMSA competition, Klaus helped deliver multiple championships in the Daytona Prototype International and GT Daytona divisions in 2019; and is seeking a repeat in 2020, having scored three consecutive overall victories in the premier DPi division, with one win and three podium finishes in GTD utilizing the Acura NSX GT3 Evo.

IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 28, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Board of Trustees of the Mazda Foundation (USA) Inc., has awarded $215,000 in grants to nine food banks operating in six major metropolitan areas across the United States. The grants will enable the awardees to serve an estimated 730,000 meals in the next 12 months.

Mazda North American Operations is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., and oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States and Mexico through nearly 700 dealers. Operations in Mexico are managed by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City. For more information on Mazda vehicles, including photography and B-roll, please visit the online Mazda media center at www.mazdausamedia.com.

These most recent grants are in addition to donations made earlier in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, the Mazda Foundation has donated $429,000 to purchase shelf-stable food items for those most vulnerable in our communities.

«The pandemic has created enormous need in communities across the country,» said Jeff Guyton, president of Mazda North American Operations and chairman of the Mazda Foundation (USA), Inc. «Addressing a fundamental need like food security is a clear expression of the Mazda Foundation’s guiding principle that what matters most is one another.»

Food banks across the country have been stretched thin by the impact of the pandemic, with demand up 60% since March. Feeding America estimates that 1 in 6 Americans are at risk of facing hunger this year.

The Mazda Foundation awarded grants to the following organizations: Bracken’s Kitchen (Garden Grove, CA); Second Harvest Food Bank (Irvine, CA); Houston Food Bank (Houston, TX); North Texas Food Bank (Plano, TX); Central Texas Food Bank (Austin, TX); Northern Illinois Food Bank (Geneva, IL); Greater Chicago Food Depository (Chicago, IL); Food Bank of North Alabama (Huntsville, AL); and Flemington Area Food Pantry (Flemington, N.J.).

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Three Toyota employees were honored last night in a virtual award ceremony with Women in Manufacturing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Ahead Awards from The Manufacturing Institute.

STEP Award Honoree Ericka Mendez, Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Baja California

The STEP Ahead Awards were created to honor female leaders in science, technology, engineering and production career fields for their excellence and outstanding leadership. This year, 130 women were recognized, from the factory floor to executive leadership, including three winners from Toyota.

  • Karen Cooper, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky
  • Lauren Powell, Production Engineering and Manufacturing Center
  • Ericka Mendez, Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Baja California

«Toyota is very proud of the outstanding achievements of our 2020 STEP Ahead Award winners,» said Chris Reynolds, chief administrative officer, Manufacturing and Corporate Resources, Toyota Motor North America. «Our employees’ commitment to excellence and dedication to our customers help inspire younger generations of women considering careers in the future of manufacturing and mobility.»

Women totaled 47 percent of the U.S. labor force in 2016, but only 29 percent of the manufacturing workforce – constituting one of manufacturing’s largest pools of untapped talent.

«Women are significantly underrepresented in manufacturing, and the industry is in the midst of a workforce crisis,» said Carolyn Lee, executive director of The Manufacturing Institute. «Closing the gender gap in the industry will go a long way toward closing the skills gap, empowering more women to join manufacturing’s ranks and lifting the industry as a whole.»

The STEP Ahead Awards are part of the larger STEP Ahead Initiative, launched to examine and promote the role of women in the manufacturing industry through recognition, research and leadership and close the gender gap in the industry.

Eighteen Toyota employees have previously received this prestigious award.

TORRANCE, California, Sept. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Acura Motorsports today announced it will partner with Meyer Shank Racing and Wayne Taylor Racing to campaign a pair of Acura ARX-05 Daytona Prototype International entries in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, beginning in 2021.

Meyer Shank Racing will field the #60 Acura ARX-05 in the 2021 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship

«It is a pleasure to announce that Wayne Taylor Racing will be joining the Acura ARX-05 IMSA program in 2021, along with Meyer Shank Racing, which will build on our very successful partnership by moving up to the prototype ranks,» said Jon Ikeda, Acura Brand Officer. «We’re confident that both teams will help us build on the successes we’ve achieved to date in IMSA competition, as we continue to apply Precision Crafted Performance to all of our activities – on the race circuits of North America, in our production vehicles, and in the market place.

«We also want to thank Roger Penske, who has long been an important part of the Acura family as one of our great Acura dealers. It has been a privilege to have Roger as part of the Acura Motorsports family over the past three years.»

Defending IMSA GTD class champion Meyer Shank Racing [MSR] is in its third decade of operation. With wins in some of the biggest races in the sport, the Ohio-based team played a key role in the development of the successful Acura NSX GT3 Evo, and has raced the car to victory lane in four consecutive seasons, culminating in the drivers’ and teams’ titles in 2019. Acura and MSR are the current leaders in all three major GTD title championships.

«When Acura and HPD chose Meyer Shank Racing to debut the Acura NSX GT3 in 2017, it was a big moment in our history. I’m really proud of building a championship-winning program and everything that we’ve been able to accomplish together with the NSX,» said Michael Shank, co-owner of Meyer Shank Racing. «As a team, we’ve been working toward the opportunity to go and fight for overall wins for a long time, and I am eager to get going with this program. But we have some work to do first, and we are 100 percent focused on bringing another IMSA championship home with the Acura NSX in 2020.»

«Mike and I are both eager to expand our IMSA program and get to once again work with Acura and HPD,» said MSR co-owner Jim Meyer. «Mike has built such a strong IMSA program over the last decade, and this is another step that we’re looking forward to pursuing.»

Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, Wayne Taylor Racing [WTR] has built a proven track record of success and ingenuity in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Prototype class, including two IMSA driver championships [in 2013 and 2017] and the 2017 IMSA DPi team championship. A three-time champion as a driver in sports car competition and Le Mans winner in 1998, Taylor’s Acura roots stretch back to 1992, when he drove for the championship-winning Comptech Acura team in IMSA Camel Lights competition.

WTR also has played an important role in winning eight IMSA manufacturer championships and has scored multiple victories in endurance racing’s most iconic events – the Rolex 24 At Daytona, Twelve Hours of Sebring, Petit Le Mans, and Six Hours at Watkins Glen.

«I am extremely excited to have this opportunity given to me by HPD and Acura Motorsports,» said Wayne Taylor, owner of Wayne Taylor Racing. «Since getting to know everyone at HPD and Acura Motorsports, I feel that they have a lot of respect for the Wayne Taylor Racing family. What I really like is that they have the same passion and vision as I do. I am looking forward to running the DPi for the next few years. I am equally excited to be able to bring my long-term partnership with Konica Minolta, Rick Taylor and Michael Mathe to the program. We all can’t wait to get started.»

«We welcome Wayne Taylor Racing into the Acura Motorsports family, and very much anticipate their contributions to our prototype program,» said Ted Klaus, president of HPD, the competition arm for Acura Motorsports. «Equally, we look forward to growing our successful partnership with Meyer Shank Racing, now in DPi. Our intention is to have Acura Motorsports partner with MSR and WTR, to not only continue our championship ways in DPi, but to collaborate to develop the next generation Acura LMDh. Finally, we want to thank Team Penske for their outstanding effort and impressive results together with Acura and HPD these past three years.»

In addition to sweeping all three major IMSA DPi championships in 2019 – for Manufacturers, Drivers and Teams – the Acura ARX-05 has scored six race wins, 14 additional podium finishes, and 11 poles from 25 races in two-and-a-half seasons of IMSA multi-manufacturer competition that has included Cadillac, Mazda and Nissan. Acura comes to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course seeking a third consecutive win this season, as well as a third consecutive victory in this weekend’s Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio.

Acura Motorsports also campaigns the Acura NSX GT3 Evo in the IMSA GTD category, with defending GTD champion Meyer Shank Racing and the Gradient Racing organizations.  Winner of the IMSA GTD driver and team titles in 2019 – and the current GTD championship leader – the NSX program is expected to continue in IMSA competition in 2021.

The Acura ARX-05 has added to a rich legacy of Acura sports car racing campaigns and championships, including the 1991-93 IMSA Camel Lights manufacturer and driver championships; 53 IMSA and American Le Mans Series class or overall race victories; and the 2009 American Le Mans Series manufacturer, driver and team championships in both the LMP1 and LMP2 classes.

The Acura ARX-05 [Acura Racing eXperimental, generation 5] is the latest in a line of endurance prototypes to be fielded by the company dating back to 1991, just five years after the 1986 launch of the Acura brand.  Based on the ORECA 07 chassis, the ARX-05 features Acura-specific bodywork and utilizes the race-proven, production-based Acura AR35TT twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine.

A Sorento for Everyone

Initially available with three powertrains, including a turbo hybrid, a PHEV will be introduced in the next model year. • Leather embossed quilt pattern on optional leather-equipped models

  • Standard FCA-Pedestrian: Builds upon FCW functionality and helps detect pedestrians in front of the vehicle and uses automatic braking to avoid or mitigate an impact
  • Available FCA-Cyclist: Builds on FCW functionality and helps detect cyclists in front of the vehicle and uses automatic braking to avoid or mitigate an impact
  • Standard Driver Attention Warning (DAW)13: Senses inattentive driving patterns and sends an audible/visual warning to alert the driver
  • Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (LVDA): Alerts driver with a chime when the leading vehicle begins to move forward from a standing position
  • Standard Lane Following Assist (LFA): Follows lane markings that the system detects and provides steering inputs to help maintain the vehicle in the center of the lane
  • Available Forward Collision Avoidance Assist (FCA) – Junction Turning (FCA-JT): Assists the driver in braking to help prevent a collision or lessen the effects in certain conditions when turning left and an oncoming vehicle is approaching
  • Available Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist (BCA): Under certain conditions, can detect vehicles traveling in the next lane. When a vehicle is «seen» in the blind spot, the vehicle brakes the outer wheel under certain conditions to help return the vehicle to its lane
  • Available Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist (RCCA): Helps detect most approaching cross traffic when in reverse. When approaching cross traffic is detected, the system alerts the driver and applies brakes
  • Available Parking Distance Warning-Reverse (PDW-R): Detects certain objects behind the vehicle, issuing an audible warning when an obstruction is detected. The warning tone chimes faster as the vehicle gets closer to the detected object
  • Available Parking Collision Avoidance Assist (PCA-R): Uses rear view camera and rear ultrasonic sensors to help detect most pedestrians or nearby obstacles when the vehicle backs out of a parking spot, warning drivers with a chime and can engage brakes to prevent a collision
  • Available Navigation Based Smart Cruise Control-Curve (NSCC-C): leverages the navigation system to lower the vehicle’s speed proactively before upcoming curves
  • Available Highway Driving Assist (HDA)14: Uses federal highway speed limit information from the navigation system and, under certain conditions, will automatically adjust speed to be within the posted speed limit and maintain distance with the vehicle detected in front
  • Available Safe Exist Assist (SEA)15: Can alert the driver or passengers opening their door not to exit the vehicle when the system detects approaching traffic. When detected, a chime sounds. The system can intervene to lock the rear doors when the vehicle is equipped with available Power Child Lock

TORRANCE, California, Sept. 22, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Acura’s top-selling SUV over the last two years gains a healthy dose of NSX supercar DNA with the creation of the 2021 RDX PMC Edition, the fourth vehicle hand assembled by master technicians at Acura’s Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Ohio. Only 360 units of the RDX PMC Edition will be built for the North American market, each bathed in stunning Thermal Orange Pearl paint shared with the electrified NSX supercar. The range topping RDX PMC Edition will carry a sticker price in the low $50,000s1 when the first customer deliveries begin this October.

The RDX PMC Edition is the most well equipped RDX variant, combining the top-shelf features from the RDX Advance Package with the aggressive and sporty styling cues of the RDX A-Spec. Exclusive to the RDX PMC Edition are gloss black 20-inch alloy wheels; a body color grille surround; black chrome exhaust finishers; and gloss-black treatment for the roof, side mirrors and door handles. As with previous PMC Edition models, Acura’s industry leading torque vectoring Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) is standard equipment.

The RDX PMC Edition’s Thermal Orange Pearl exterior is complemented on the inside with color-matched orange stitching for the seats, center console, door panels, steering wheel and floor mats. Mixing A-Spec style with the Advance Package’s premium touches, the RDX PMC edition features a 10.5-inch color Head-Up Display, 16-way power Sport Seats trimmed in Ebony Milano leather and Ultrasuede®, heated steering wheel and heated outboard rear seats.

Bringing RDX PMC Edition to Life

The 2021 Acura RDX follows the unique formula established with the TLX and MDX PMC Edition models. Once the body-in-white arrives at PMC, each RDX PMC Edition is finished in Thermal Orange Pearl paint, a striking premium paint offered on NSX since 2019. The paint is applied using PMC’s advanced robotic paint system in multiple base coats to enhance color intensity. Next a mid-coat of gold and orange mica is applied giving off a pearlescent effect in the sunlight. Lastly, four layers of clearcoat are applied to increase the paint’s luster and protect the finish. Each PMC Edition undergoes the same meticulous hand inspection process given to the NSX. The total time in paint, including curing, is five days.

Immediately following the paint process, PMC master technicians begin hand assembly, starting with installation of all drivetrain and chassis components, wiring harnesses and electronics. Once completed, the PMC Edition 20-inch wheels and tires and exterior trim are added. The final step in the process is to fit the vehicle with its unique interior including an individually numbered serial plate affixed to the RDX’s center console.

After completing the hand assembly process, every RDX PMC Edition undergoes an identical quality control process as NSX, which includes a full electronic systems line-end test, expert wheel alignment, dyno run, water-leak test and final paint examination. Before exiting PMC, each vehicle is wrapped in a protective film and loaded onto an enclosed, single-car carrier for transport to an Acura dealer.
